Title: Found a 1984 AMC Eagle, what's you're opinion?
Post by: EagleJoe93 on September 05, 2011, 09:47:37 PM
Hi everyone,

I recently 're-found' the 1984 AMC Eagle wagon that I had mentioned in my previous post.  There are some things that have changed from then to now.  First of all, the 4WD is working now (according to the seller) and the asking price has been lowered to $1,250.  On the way back from a vacation we were able to take a quick look at it.  Aside from a small amount of rust near the driver's side cargo area window, the body looked good.  We didn't get see the underside of the car because by the time we got there it was dark.  I hope to return to the Eagle during daylight where my Dad and I can look at it more closely.  These are the issues we know of:
•   It sounds like it needs a carburetor rebuild,
•   The brake pedal seemed to "bottom out", with further pressure not producing increased stopping.  The  pedal isn't spongy; in fact, it's quite firm, and it's not close to the floor.  My dad thinks the linkage between the pedal and the master cylinder may need adjustment.  However, the seller says he sometimes needs to pump the brakes... we'll definitely need to investigate this further.
•   The muffler is rusted out and will need to be replaced.
•   It needs a headliner.
•   There's a tear in the back of the backseat and some knobs from the radio and AC control knobs are missing, as well as the dome light.
On a positive note, it seemed to run OK, although it idled pretty roughly.  The seats and floor carpets were clean and in good shape.  It has only 73k miles and it's pretty original, from the emissions components to its factory AM/FM radio.  I know in the previous post that you all told me to stay away from this Eagle because the non-working 4WD could possibly be a serious issue.  But now that it may be working, I wanted to know what you all think now.

if the underside is in great condition I'd offer 1000 for it (make sure you have money in your hand when you make the offer so the buyer can see that you are very serious)  As far as carb goes I am one of the many around the nest that have gone with a 2100 motorcraft and I will never go back to carter

I like Thereverendbill's advice.

I agree with what Bill says.  Vacuum line issues can be tricky to sort out, but not too bad.
