Title: Concord Interior Door Panel Part 2. Restoration?
Post by: 1982AMCCONCORD on August 08, 2011, 04:39:48 PM
OK so my previous post got lost to the internet Gods... and after emailing two moderators about the issue with no resolve... I guess I'll just have to re-post my story...

Well... I got the door panel off of ebay... and it was unfortunately NOT a match.

The good thing is that its a good shade to dye darker...

I was thinking about getting the color matched and getting the fabric changed.

I think the 60 bucks was worth it just for the metal wood grain piece.

Do you guys think this is a good plan or is it even possible and if so... any body know a good AMC door panel repair man?

Thanks for any advice. I think I still got pretty lucky!

If you find a good paint mixing place, they scan the color. I'd find one, take the panel in from your current car, and have it scanned. They will mix the paint in a spray can. You can spray it. All you would need is an acrylic paint and prep spray. I had mine scanned and bought touch up paint for my dash and other little places on my 87 Garnet Red Eagle. It was $35 to have mixed. They will usually charge double that for spray cans and some left over.

Wow... cool... where did you go? An automotive body shop?

The reason I ask about a resto place is because the carpet at the bottom also needs to be swapped for a darker burg as well... maybe just an interior shop can do that though huh?

If your contact your local Maaco, they will tell you where there would be a shop who will scan and mix your paint. I live in Minneapolis and there was a place in West St. Paul, MN.

I've heard that carpet can also be recolored, although I've never attempted it myself.  There should be a mention of it somewhere on this forum.

Just be sure to use quality products and you should get good results.  SEM vinyl dye seems to get rave reviews.

Excellent... let me do some more researching.

There's a part of me that although would like to save a buck... I MIGHT still want to get it done... someone told me that places that do it like to do it in pairs... so each panel matches each other!!!

SEM Color Coat can be used for minor color changes to carpet.  I did it one time.  It may be possible to paint the rest of the door panel with SEM, but I don't know for sure.   I have not tried it on door panels.

There were a couple of 2 door and 4 door red door panels on Ebay this week.  The prices were not bad either.
