Title: bad stepper motor
Post by: eagle503 on May 12, 2011, 01:56:34 PM
So my stepper motor does nothing and I cant afford an expensive fix rite now. I am thinking of doing the ecm test bypass but I don't know how to set the stepper manually. Does any body have a stepper motor for cheap? Or know of a good fix? I know I have more problems than the carb but cant deal with them until it runs rite.
The problems I am having Include but are not limited to...
Hard to start
Rough inconsistent idle
poor acceleration
runs hot
eats gas
Thanks Guys!

First, is the stepper motor plug attached to the stepper motor?  If so, then your ECM may not be working and you may want to consider Step 3 in the ECM test.

If you need one, I have about 25 of them.

Anyone need BBD's? I have w/ stepper and w/o.  All came from running Eagles and have been sitting in a pile in the shop for up to 2 years.  Just added another one to the pile yesterday.  All will need a good clean out and possibly a kit before installing (recommended anyway) All should be (should be) jetted for high altitude.  REAL CHEAP!!!  Have a handfull of webbers and 1bbls too.  They are all in my way.    Let me know.

on that note, I have all emissions parts too.  i normally throw everything in the dump after an install but I have a few full bins of solenoids, chokes, vac canisters, fittings, etc....

If you can GRONK hang on to that stuff as we do have members, quite often, looking for that stuff, especially in emissions testing areas and those who still prefer the Carter's.   If you were closer I would get them from you and have them available thru the store as folks needed them.

Iowa, yes its plugged in I even cleaned the contacts but it does nothing not a click hum nothing. But my warning lights all work in the dash wouldn't this mean the ecm is still good?the emissions lite was on until i replace the o2 sensor, the alternator lite was on until i replaced the alternator. Can i test the stepper plug with a volt-o-meter,if so what should i be looking for? And how does the ECM Test effect performance and fuel consumption?

Gronk, I want to order a 2150 but cant afford it rite now,but I need to get this thing on the road for now so if you have a stepper motor or non stepper carb on the cheap I would like to make a deal.

Thanks Guys!

My stepper motor didn't work either. I removed it and lubed and freed it up. Now it can move again.  There actually is a way to test the stepper motor, I don't remember the procedure off the top of my head, but I can get tomorrow.

Eagle503, I'm willing to work w/ you if you want.  I'm a bartering machine.  What'cha got?  Jeep/Eagle or cool guy-stuff in general works.  If you can come up w/ a good 2100/2150 I have a complete "carbless" kit too.   I have a kit I'd like to test out.  Willing to take $50 off and do free shipping for the tester.

Man GRONK that sounds awesome!  I've been looking around for a 2100-2150(you have the best deal), what is a "carbless" kit? What kind of kit do you want to test out? I don't have a emissions test to pass where i am but would like to keep it clean however at present the pulls air stuff is removed and plugged on my motor.
I like to barter! Ive got manifolds from a 232 with a carter yf attached ,an OE starter from an 84 eagle 258,I make hi end hunting knives and other hand tools even made a hot rod bbq spatula ,native flutes, didgeridoo, all kinds of stuff!
I am a picker by trade and can find just about anything so give me some ideas what you are after I will try and hunt it down if I don't have it already.I really appreciate you offering to work with me on this! I am very intrigued by this new kit  is it in the $200-$300 range like your other kits?
Thanks a lot!

My carbless kit comes w/ EVERYTHING but the carb.  Custom C&C milled adapter (my design), base gasket, carb gasket, proper throttle linkage (down pull) w/ ball stud, mounting hardware for carb, intake hex bolts, throttle return spring, air cleaner stud, fuel inlet nozzle, instructions, instructions, instructions....  Shipped for $125

The kit I want to test is a newer version of the 2150.  I have seen it used before but I have never personally used it and I have about 100 of them in the shiop on the shelf.  I currently have almost 3000 cores ready to build.

I'm intrested in the knives.  send me some info, my kid collects them.  I'm verey intrested in an Eagle (hint hint) iof you knew a few others that needed a setup and between the 3 of you could come up w/ an eagle for me to play with.  :)

Let me know......  It takes me a few days to build kit and ship the setups but I'm currently almost caught up w/ orders (rarely happens)  I sell anywhere from 60-120 kits every month for the 258, 302, 360, 401 (99% for the 258)

I would be willing to test out the newer version of the 2150. That carbless kit is a good deal to, to bad i haven't been able to find a cheap 2100 around hear. Eagles are hard to find (endangered) in my area I've been looking for a cheap parts wagon for a wile now and all I can find is a couple sx4s. As far as I know there are only two on the road out hear on the coast my 85 wagon and my buddy Gordy's 83 sx4. You should have no problem finding a junk yard queen down there. Or maybe someone on the Eagles nest close to you has a collection and needs a carb.

Here is my most recent knife I just finished it this week. It is acid etched "damascus" Pattern welded spring and carbon steel folded 250+ times with a cocobolo wood handle. It is eight and a half inches long. Each knife I make is a hand made one of a kind original piece and usually I only make about ten in a year. I am about a month off from having another piece of damascus ready to work with. My material cost on something like this is about $60 add time and labor and I usually get between 1-2 hundred at a rendezvous. I offer this warranty on all my work~ If you take care of it so will I,for life. That means as long as you don't use it as a pry bar or to scrape concrete off your boots you will have a :censored: nice knife to give your grand kid some day.Send it back to me once a year and I will re hone the blade as well as redo the patina no charge just pay shipping.

The sun has been shining and I have been busy, but I got a little done on the Eagle. I did some diagnostics on the computer and good news it is OK. It seems just the stepper motor is bad. I also tested the old o2 sensor it was toast so it is a good thing I put that new one in. And I think it mite do some good to clean out my idle tubes.
It's not running that bad, now I just need to get the temp down any suggestions?

GRONK-I sent you a couple emails.

What did you do to test the computer?

I used a multimeter to test the diagnostic plugs. This site has a good run down~http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/list.htm (http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/list.htm)

So I found some info on how the stepper is supposed to behave and I thought I should share it . After Reading  the "6 cylinder fuel Feedback Systems Manual" I have a better understanding of how this thing is supposed to function. My stepper does not work so I pulled it out again and messed around trying to get it to move, finally it budged.....
and the metering pins came all the way out, oops their goes that little spring! since it wont move on its own I putt it back together in the mid point range and put it in. It was a lot easier to start and the exhaust smelled better but it is still getting hot and idle is rough. I think my next step is to clean the idle tubes and go from there.
I was not sure where the pins should be before, people said they should be all the way forward or in the mid point but I did not have any reference and the stepper was not able to move so I had no idea what all the way forward looked like. I got the F.S.M. and it cleared up that confusion! It is full of awesome pics and descriptions of all the fuel system components.

<<<<<<<Forward<<<<<<

I have been trying to keep moving on this project but I can not afford to spend a bunch of money rite now. I need to get this thing on the road so I can get out and make some money. I am waiting to hear back from GRONK about a 2150 but I Cant just sit and idle. If any body has a stepper motor they don't want I sure could use it, If I can get the carb working rite I can move on to fixing other things.

As always your suggestions and input are greatly appreciated!
