Title: Output shaft seal
Post by: mojosmr on May 10, 2011, 02:06:49 PM
Mojos mr here, finally got my own user account, thanks for lettin' me skate by  for years.
I got a question on the SR4 Output shaft seal.
The part # for a 23 spline is a national seal 472439 calls out for 1.875 shaft, 2.623 housing bore.
I measured the shaft and it mic'd at 1.937, very clearly.  Why would they put a seal in with a 32nd of interference.
has anyone ever put in a seal with a shaft diameter of 1.9375?
By the way the spirit is coming along swell.  This is for the eagle though.

Let the egggging commence !! and no I haven't a reasonable answer for that question. If I understand it right you are looking at the difference between the shaft o.d. and seal i.d. ??If I remember it just kinda flares out over onto the shaft surface instead of haveing just a thin contact point the thinckness of the seal material.....or are you asking about the seal o.d. and the hole in the case where it goes i.d. ??

the shaft O.D and the seal I.D.  THE SPECIFIED SEAL FOR THE  NP119 IS A FULL 1/16TH SMALLER THAN THE SHAFT O.D.
I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF INTERFERENCE (caps lock) that would introduce.  Is it normal to have a 32nd of interference on a shaft.  I'm probably getting to cranial with it.  I put the 1.875 seal in, I was just wondering if that was normal interference for wear purposes. :-\

Not certain on this specific part. But similar gaskets are that way as well.

Right on.  I'll put that issue to bed, thanks for the input.  I downloaded a an interchange manual for national seals that allow me to cross reference size so I can avoid the middle man and go to my seal vendor.  I'm tired of getting gouged for 3 or 4 dollar seals.
