Title: Possible future axle swap . . . "AM-??/D35" to AM-20 ?'s
Post by: SX/290 on May 09, 2011, 08:49:52 AM
 :amc:
I have what appears to be a Dana 35 rear axle in my 82' SX/4, Some say its an AM-10 other say AM-15 . . . Looks like a D35 to me  ???

I am an AMC-20 fan, Would like to know if an AM-20 could be swapped under rear if one so chose to in the future ;)

:newbie:

The AMC15 should handle what you want to throw at it. But I don't see why an AMC20 won't work. The Eagle is spring over, so if you have a spring under axle you'll have to move the spring brackets. What would the AMC come out of? Eagle is 5x4.5. If yo get out of a CJ you will have 2 different bolt patterns.

I do have CJ-20 but its a 47" width housing so I don't see it fitting.

I bought it for my V8 Comanche and found the Comanche has a 54" Housing with 60" WMS to WMS.

But 68'- 70' AMX's have 58" WMS spacing and 71'- 74' Javelins have 60" WMS spacing.

Those are both 5x4.5 axles as with most of AMC car's n XJ/MJ jeeps do as well.

I need the measurements of the AM-15 to find which AM-20 I would need and if such a width AM-20 exsist's in 5x4.5 then I'll swap it.

Yes sir I know i been looking for an MJ-20, I found out the 71'-74' Jav-20 is the same width, tho its got 2 piece axles it has a stronger axle housing supposedly . . . I was told buy the Jav-20 housing and install Moser or MJ-20 axle shafts to get a top notch 60" WMS spaced AM-20, I found out this axle will also swap right under an Eagle :hello2:

;D So i'm looking for a pair of 60" AM-20's 1 for my MJ-343 build and 1 for my SX/290 swap  ;)

Jeep XJ axle is within 1/2" of the Eagle diff. An M20 from an early ('86 to mid '88 Metric Tonne package) Comanche will work with new spring pads and shock mounts. I have a Chrysler 8.25 from an XJ I'm about to replace my D35/M15 with (AFAIK, no such thing as a M10 diff). I have an M20 from a '78 Spirit I was going to put in my MJ but it was narrower.

My Spirit with Eagle rear diff and beefed springs (wagon springs do NOT work in SX4 or Spirits!)

'81 Wagon I parted for drivetrain (floor was non-existent in many places)
