Title: 86 Eagle Axle
Post by: racerky on April 19, 2011, 02:46:28 PM
1986 Eagle 4 door, right rear axle bent, what will replace it.
I thought CJs are the same.
Any ideas?

CJ's have AMC 20 rears where as the Eagle has an AMC 15.

Eagle axle shafts are Eagle specific (except for the '80 Pacer which is even rarer).   The good thing is that both sides are the same.  Is the axle shaft bent or is it the tube?

Somebody before me has beaten the right hub to pieces, which I think is not letting the drum fit flush on the hub.
Last night I tried to grind down the humps the hammering made, we will see.
To be safe I thought I would just replace the axles, I do not know what has been done in the past. :)

Hello,

This just may help narrow the problem down .... I would chock the wheels and jack the bent wheel off the ground .... remove the tire so as to remove the out of balance mass.  start the car put it in gear and watch the center of the axle shaft to see if it's bend..... Just remember  to use the brakes to stop the spinning axle BEFORE you put the trans back in park. Hope it helps !!

                                                                           Regards, Iron Horse ;D

As for whole axles, I believe that Cherokees are very similar (and plentiful).

Agreed on the '84 up Cherokee axle. Just the shock mounts need reversing.

They came with several options too.
Model15/Dana 35C
Dana 44 (tow package)
Chrysler 8 1/4 ('91 up)

Comanche diffs are the same width, but spring pads need doing as well as adding shock mounts.
They had another option '86 till mid '88. Model 20 with 1 piece shafts.

YJ Wranglers have the same pattern and width as well.
