Title: leaking windshield?
Post by: maddog on March 04, 2011, 08:32:51 PM
i got off work today and it was raining outside. i thought no big. but as i was getting ready to pull out of the parking lot water started dripping from just above the stearing colum. well i stopped the car and checked the area around where the water was coming from well the headliner area was damp but the rubber seal was not. then i checked the top corner of the windshield on the driverside and it was wet. the windshield hasn't been in the car a year yet and this is the first time it has leaked since it was put in. do you think i should take it to the place that put it in or just try to fix it myself?

Most glass shops warrant their work.  I would check with them first.

Guessiong you have a luggage rack. Try replacing the well nuts that hold that thing up. The nest sells them

i do have a luggage rack but it is the early version that has the odd spoiler on it as it is my 80 that is leaking and not my 83.

i would take it back to the glass place and have them check it out and make sure they test it with a garden hose (spray water on it)

I was stuck in that rain today too....got pretty wet :(. would guess its probably the seal on the windshield....On my 87 I had a problem with the luggage rack well nuts leaking and it leaked more off to the side and yours being an 80 kinda rules that out anyway. Its been very cold this winter and that mixed with the warm couple of days we just had can really mess with the seal...If there was a weak spot in the windshield seal the expanding and contracting of the rubber due to extreme variations in weather can certainly cause it to leak...as a matter of fact I got a bit wet on the way back up from pueblo today cause my trucks windshield  was leaking like a sive...I just replaced it in September and I have a hunch that my seal got screwed cuz of the weather changes.

well i got to thinking (not always a good thing) about where the water could be coming in from and one thing that came to mind was the fact that i don't have the little chrome pieces that go across the top anymore and some of the plastic tabs aren't there but seeing as i haven't seen any leaks before i'm thinking it may just be the seal. and since i got it done at elite auto glass it has a lifetime guarantee on it. i will do the water test myself with a bucket.
