We're making progress on preparing our SX4 race project. Our car was equipped with the AC option, so the next things on the list is to remove it :) By looking at the belt routing, it appears that if we just removed it, we'd lose tension on the alternator pulley. We considered fabricating a bracket to re-use the AC clutch pulley assembly to keep the belts in the same position, but this doesn't seem optimal.
How are belts on the 258's without the AC option laid out? Do they use a dead pulley like I was suggesting, or do they relocate the alternator? Any pictures would be helpful.
If we were to just look for an alternator or AC delete bracket at junk yard, would one off any non-AC 258 do, or have changes been made in certain models/years?
Thanks!
I know whem my AC went in the caddy , I found a delete pulley at NAPA , removed the compressor and this bolted in the same holes , not sure on the Eagles though..........
The alternator is relocated upward where the ac pump is.
with AC

and then after we removed AC, alternator is indeed relocated up.

non AC bracket is helpful
thx for the pictures mojo! seems pretty easy :)
casper, I'll message you :occasion14:

why not just put a double groove pulley on the alt and call it good, with a shorter belt of course??? I went that route myself.
got any pics of it? or any threads discussing it?

Not really detailed but:
1. remove the ac stuff, leave the bracket
2. Remove alternator
3. remove pulley from alt
4. Install double groove pulley (1965 -1995 ford pulley work well).
5. Install alternator
6. Install belt around crank and alternator. ( think I used a 17400, better off a little smaller, like a 17395)
The front end of the eagle currently sits in front about 3 1/2' of solid ice and snow (the back's no better)... so I can't take a pic.

Bearing shot on AC clutch/idler. Want to remove AC compressor. [don't use it] but, of course, still want to have the alternator work. See several options. All require 'outside' parts - ie. Ford pully.
Could the pullys be taken off the AC, placed on the alt. and the alt. mounted on the AC brackets??
a
The way the pullies mount are very different between ac and alternators
Anyone know how to find a A/C delete pulley? Looked on NAPA online - no results.
I don't think they have them for our engines.
Bummer! What would you think would be my next best solution?
I got rid of my ac with another altenator. I customized brackets for it.
Its used for an on board stick welder. So if that is possible. Make a bracket and move your alt up.
Wouldn't have a picture of those brackets would you?
Also interested in your stick welder set-up.

Welds look bad I know. But it still holds it. Anyway just what I did to mount this can be used to delete your ac.
Thanks. My alt. has a one-belt pulley. Is the one on the bottom the orig? Which one is the stick welder?
How do you hook-up the welder? Does it work well?
Top one welds bottom original. You get different voltage at different rpm but the amperage is constant to the alt. So if higher or lower amp is needed you swap the alt accordingly. Works good I alsocarry an electric fan to flow air through the radiator. I like it for a portable stick.
My hook up is a lage gauge jumper cable positive to the alt output ground is ground and to turn it on and off I just hook the alt exciter up to full 12v. No regulator.
Thanks for that. Very innovative. I like it a lot.
