Title: Greetings From Nevada & Help me with a Kammback?
Post by: nevadabandit on February 26, 2011, 03:01:25 PM
I am brand new to this site, and so far its outstanding!
I owned an Eagle wagon (1981) for several years and loved it.
Family got so big we had to move up in cubic feet capacity and the Eagle was let go.  (still sad about that)
Now, I have a chance to pick up a 1981 Kammback with the four cylinder in it with 94K original miles.
It was parked 15 years ago when the plastic timing gear let go and was always going to be fixed but never was.
Its really stright and even has the bumper caps on it still,  its a dingy brown color and faded of course but I love the look and want to semi-restore it and use it.
What advice can anyone give me on a price that this may be worth?
I have a picture of it on my phone, but dont know how to get it off and into this site, but will have one of my grandkids work on it soon.  They can do anything with gramps phone.....

All the glass is good, no dents or bumps, havent looked real close to see about rust yet, didnt want to alert the owner that I was real interested just yet.

What should I look for in evaluating this little baby?

Thanks for your time and support with this project .....

Look under the car closely.  For some reason Kammbacks rusted more severely, sooner, than other models.  And, welcome to the Nest.

To upload pictures you must use a third party host.
First upload the pictures to somewhere  -
Most of us use free Photobucket accounts.
www.photobucket.com
We recommend clicky pics.  This is a thumbnail picture that enlarges when clicked.
Photobucket has made a change in the way you copy the code.
Here is the way it looks to me:
For a single clicky pic, hover over the picture.  This will open a drop down menu.  Click on the fourth window, img.
It will then say "copied".
Go to the thread where you want to put the picture and paste it in.
For multiple clicky pics, hover over the pictures and click on the small box at the bottom of the picture.
Scroll down and click on "Choose action".  Click "Generate code for selected".
This will open another page.  Click on the third box, "IMG for bulletin boards & forums".  It will say "copied".  Paste it into the thread of your choice.
In both instances you can select "Preview" to make sure it is what you want before you post it.

crawl under it (or have one of the grandkids) check the floors, the truck area, the frame rails, brake lines, gas lines.  if any of those are scaley or have any holes in them it is an excellent barging tool.  If it looks real bad and the price is right I'd say pick it up and sell the parts off of it because there are a few kammback specific parts (the end caps) that might just pay you what you got the whole car for leaving you with a profit pig

Best of luck with it and i can't wait to see pictures

I hope the Kammback turns out to be a good car.  We need more members in the Kammback Club!  Check the inner and outer rocker panels.  Replacement outer panels are available, the inner ones can be fabricated like I had to do on mine.  There were only a few more than 6,000 Kammbacks built so you would certainly have a rare bird there!  If the car is from Nevada, like you're name suggests, hopefully the rust is minimal!

I second what everyone else says. Rust is the kiss of death on these things...I had to give up my 86 sedan project cuz of it. If its got a clean underbody you've already won half the battle...Best of luck.

We live about 20 miles from the Utah border and 150 miles North of Las Vegas Nevada.
We are at about 4000 feet and do get some weather but the humidity is around 15 to 25% all the time and your right, rust just isnt a big issue unless the vehicle is left where the weeks grow up under it and wick the moisture up to the surface.   I think I can get this car for under $500 with a clear title and all,  I am working with the man who purchased it new so he has all the documentation and records for the car.  He is very mechinical and know right away what had happened to the timing gear and just pushed it back against his fence.  He had ever intention of fixing it, but life happens and gets in the way sometimes.

Is this a fair price if everything is there and the interior is somewhat OK?  I havent looked real close yet, I was dealing with him on another issue and noticed the car behind his place.

the more I read about the Kammback, the more I love it!  What a cute pratical car!

Actually were a little father south than than, we are directly West of Cedar City Utah, just inside the Nevada Border.  Thats about 160 miles North of Las Vegas.

Hey Shanebo, if you are interested in picking up a Kammback, I know of one in Colorado that comes with a parts car.  Let me know and I can provide some details.  Thanks.

This must have been a radio delete car originally.  Whomever installed the aftermarket radio made a rather odd choice to put the antenna on the driver's side.

First time I've seen a radio bezel with no defrost or wiper switches.  Definitely a southern car if it didn't even come with a rear window defroster.

Snow in Nevada?  You did say you were up in the northern part of the state, but still it seems weird.

Looks like quite a collection of vehicles on the other side of the fence, but you're getting the one that counts.  ;)

My ultimate goal is to own one of every body style someday...The Kammy is going to be, by far the hardest to find next to the Sx4 and coupe...Alredy got the wagon and sedans are relativly easy to come by.

actually shanebo there is one body style that is harder than the kammback and that is the sundancer (a two door convertible)

Ive pretty much put it out of my head about finding a sundacer or better yet a Turbo diesel. If a guy does find one they are very expensite...Thing with those cars is people wont easily give them up, so theres not too many available

That last eagle sedan I had was almost a sundancer as much rust as there was under that top..LOL a couple more years out in the weather I would have had the worlds first 4 door convertible eagle!
