Title: ignition lock cylinder differences
Post by: mojobean on June 14, 2010, 12:45:32 AM
took some photos of the difference in my ignition lock cylinder?
The one with ridges(on the left in the first 3 photos, and on the right in 4th photo) is the one that was in my eagle when i bought it. it had alot of slop and always seemed like it was on the verge of falling out. I recently bought an NOS set of ignition and door lock cylinders and decided to replace mine.

i'm happy to say the NOS one fits nice and snug, there is no play, and it does not stick out farther than it should.

The one with ridges on the handle is the same as those in all 3 of our family's '89 Jeeps(YJ, YJ, MJ). The NOS one is the same as in my '82 Eagle and '79 FSJ Cherokee.

On your car, it seems the previous owner or mechanic swapped in a cylinder from a '87 and later Chrysler-symbol-key application, and it sounds like the AMC-spec'd column resented the change.

if you head to your local auto parts store and get the ignition cylinder for a mid 80's GM it will go right in as the eagle uses the GM column
