Amazing what a new air filter can do
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:09:17 PM »
My gas mileage has been plummeting, down to 16 mpg highway. I finally changed the cone filter out for a new one so I can wash and reoil the other one without having to wait for it to dry. Now back into low 20s, with a lot more power available. I went 20k miles on that filter, it turned from red to black.

Thanks for reminding me that when you pull a concord out of the 5 month old snow bank that is almost gone, one should check the air cleaner.

I imagine the new Fram will pay for itself in short order.

No worries. I would just hope the only fram product on your car is the air filter ;)

I second that.

And I feel like adding another couple of inexpensive things that surely improve our lives:

1) Fuel pump

2) PCV valve and PCV breather filter.

I'm telling this because I happened to replace these 4 things together and I obtained a dramatic improvement under many points of view.

The pump was cracked and weak: this gave me gas in oil, gas+oil leaking through the pump's weep hole and spraying all around, poor acceleration, poor MPG and it took forever to start after sitting for a while.

The PCV system, overclogged, contributed in poor crankcase ventilation and lots of oil (more than "normal" blowby) into the air cleaner, which takes us back in topic ;)

Oh, really ? I guess that's why I need BOTH rear bumper corner caps now. Doh !
