the 258 in my eagle, after i run it till its all warmed up,  when i go to restart it it doesnt get oil pressure right away and knocks rather badly for a few seconds.  afterwards, it runs fine until i turn it off then it does it again.  its getting worse.  what could cause this?

i cant wiggle the harmonic balancer at all.  so the main bearings appear to be ok.  and id think bearings would knock all the time anyway.  i dont know what to do.  oil Pump?

HI   It sounds like wrong or bad oil filter it is not holding the oil like it should ..it has to fill the oil filter every time you start the car ...that's not good for motor    oil filter............Don

What did you replace the distributor with? It might be slightly too short, or not fitting in properly and like teneagle said, not turning the oil pump.

Back on topic I'm leaning towards oil pump.

i got the distributor from crtperformance.com  i pulled it and measured out the dimensions and the teeth are the same as the old distributor  so im figuring its the oil pump.  i bought one today but i dont have any way to lift the engine from the car. is there any way to get the oil pan off without pullin the motor?

Have checked oil pressure with a direct reading pressure gauge?
I have dropped the pan on an eagle before. You have to support the engine from above then drop the front diff and crossmember down to get enough room to remove the pan. Once the pans out you can change the rear main seal also install a high volume pump. check rod bearings and main bearings you may be able to get .001 oversized bearings if no damage to crank and clearance measurements check good.

you can get the pan off with the engine still in the car, but I ran into problems getting the pan back in the car with the engine still in there and ended up having to pull the engine to get the pan on

I'm going to say that the bearings are starting to get loose and it takes longer for the oil to build enough pressure to tighten things up when its warm.
