Title: Wheel bearings

I appear to have a faulty wheel bearing in the front...it's making a growling noise and the faster you go the louder it is. Anyway I have it at the shop and going to get both sides replaced but the problem is the mechanic tells me it takes special tools for this job...anything to this about taking special tools for the jpb?

replacing front bearings on an Eagle is a pretty big job, a press is needed, unless you buy the new hub from Crown, you also need an EXTERNAL TorX wrench/socket. good luck, GZ  also, there are two different seals, and an O-ring needed.

Is crown the name of the company and do they have a website?

Altho the special tool set does make the job easier, it can be done with little more than a big vice, brass punches, hammer, pieces of pipe, etc. (I've personally done it that way in the past, before I had the tools and press).    The tool set is like this one (tho this one is missing one spacer):

Sounds like maybe your mechanic just doesn't want to mess with it - time for a second opinion!

hi   for both sides:
Hub:  Crown #J3238526           2 needed
O-Ring: Crown #J3238144   2 needed
SEAL, iNNER: Timken #3942  2 needed
Seal, Outer: Timken #3553     2 needed
Bearing, Timken #set26           4 needed

You can reuse old hubs, but then a press is advisable. Crown products are available through most auto parts places. good luck, gz

I rebuilt mine with out a tool kit. I used a 10 ton press and was careful . I agree with Houston , mechanic didn't  want to, or know how to, do the job.   Check the front diff as well . Thing 2 was sounding like hub bearings on left side . Long aggravating story made short , my front diff had to be rebuilt .
