As far as I can tell yes.  No idea if there's a reliable way to test them, other than getting a new replacement.  I've seen some that pass "testing" done at the auto parts stores, even though they are actually bad.

Heat affects the ignition module, and the only way I know to test them is a special machine that supplies the ignition pulse and checks the output, but unless you had access to an old AMC or Ford dealership it's best to pick up a spare to check. You'd have to find a way to test it warm anyway.

Actually, the old school test is put a test light on top of the box for 10 minutes or so (in the car) then start the car, warm it up, pull the light off and tap the box with a rubber mallet. Engine stall means the box is about to quit.

Well, the diagnosis was bent rods, likely caused by stuck valves from sitting for so long.  Had to bring the car to a shop to have it worked on since I do not have tools, time, nor a place to do that sort of work. ouch...  ::)

Anyway, the guys said the car runs like a top now so i'm headed over after work to look at it and figure out what else I need to do.  I know the clutch needs some work, but i'm hoping they will pull the master and slave for me and let me rebuild them, saving a bit of labor there.  After that I'll just need plates and a registration. Horay!  :blob1:
