Title: 81 high beam stuck on
Post by: jmanczka on June 22, 2021, 11:01:22 PM
So I just picked up a 1981 SX/4 with minimal issues.  All the lights worked when I took it for a spin until I turned on the high beams.  Once I turned on the high beams they were stuck on.  All the other lights work but the front maker lights and turn signals will not operate now.  When I pull back the lever I feel no mechanical click for the lights to go back to low beam.  I hope that the switch didnt break in the 10 mins I drove it but it is 40 years old.  Is there a way to get the switch out of high beams without pulling the steering wheel and what not?  If I can get back to the low beams working and turn signals I would be more than willing to rewire the high beams to a different switch other than the column switch.  Speaking of that switch.  If I order a new turn signal column switch online does that incorporate the high beam switch?  I feel like I need a Haynes or Chilton manual for this beast lol.  Thanks for any advice you all can provide.

Joe

I can't directly answer most of your questions, but I will point you to the Eaglepedia where you will find a copy of the 82/82 Technical Services Manual (TSM), which is the official repair manual used by AMC technicians back in the day.  You can also find used print copies and CD copies of the various years on eBay.

Look towards the top of this page, and you'll see a medium blue button labeled "EPEDIA."   That will take you to the Eaglepedia index where #8 is the 1982 & 1983 TSM.  Much better than the Haynes or Chilton manuals.  Good luck!

Dimmer switch is easy to get to.  Look down low on the steering column, on the left side.   You may have to remove the package tray to get to it.

Thanks for the info!  I was getting ready to order a Haynes or Chilton manual lol.  I'm just trying to get some research done.  I just had surgery on my right shoulder so as soon as I can I'm going to get working on old Norma my  :eaglebig:
