Is your PCV working properly? You should be able to remove it and hear a rattle when you shake it.

Electrical / Mystery Relay on '83 Eagle- Anyone know what this is for?
« Last post by markindy on October 06, 2024, 06:21:16 PM »
I tried to post a picture of the relay, but I guess it's too big.  I have what I assume is a relay mounted on the firewall, next to the vacuum routing sticker.  I can't find a reference to it in the manual and I haven't seen it in pictures of other '83 Eagles.  It's about the size of a horn relay, with 3 connections labeled "L", "B", and "S"....and no wiring harness laying around to give me a clue.  The car does have cruise control, which doesn't work...but no idea if this relay has anything to do with that.

Emissions/Vacuum Systems / Another post about oil in the air cleaner...
« Last post by markindy on October 06, 2024, 06:13:34 PM »
I've read many posts about the PCV system, and getting oil in the air cleaner.  Most point to a solenoid that controlled the PCV valve as the culprit, but my '83 Eagle doesn't have a solenoid.  The line from the PCV valve goes directly to the base of the carb, with a T-connection going to the evap cannister.  After a long highway drive, oil was dripping out of the the snorkel of the air cleaner, and the filter was saturated....but the car still ran fine.  There was also some oil on the hood insulation, which I think likely came from the the dipstick tube.  Vacuum is strong at idle and the car accelerates and runs smoothly.
The only other thing I see that could cause the engine to pull air through the crankcase breather is the secondary "flapper door" on the snorkel.  What does it do?  I understand the one that directs heated air....but the other doesn't seem to do anything other than completely block air from the snorkel.

Your Eagle(s) / Re: finally got photos

So I got my driver's side front suspension taken apart and I found that the lower control arm is missing the steering stop and has a small dent in it. So now I'm wondering if I need to get another driver side lower control arm.

Off topic / Re: Interest in an Eagle Book?
« Last post by 89 MJ on October 05, 2024, 09:15:09 PM »
So we are getting close to publishing and having it ready to get out to the public. I do have a couple of questions with this.
1. I'm not doing this to make money, but the price of the book will determine whether or not pictures will be color, whether or not the pages are coated, whether or not the book will be hardcover (with case wrap or linen wrap as binding options) or paperback (with coil bound, perfect bound, or saddle stitch as binding options), and whether the cover page will be glossy or matte. I'd prefer coated pages, hardcover with linen wrap, and a matte cover, but that is going to be more expensive than paper back. What is everyone's preference on these options? Is there a price that you want me to keep it under?

2. Here is a list of my chapters and sub chapters. Is there anything else you guys want added?

3. I'm thinking of doing 5 or so pages at the end which has a table to fill out for modifications/maintenance. The categories would be date, mileage, what was done. Do you want something like this?

4. Any other thoughts? I'm looking at starting the publishing process in at least a week because I need to go through and proofread it first. Feel free to drop any ideas between then and now.

I put them in the correct way and if I remember right the bolt was center. But I'd have to go out and look at the car. But currently I have a slight headache and I don't really feel like sliddng under a car at the moment, but I can go and look at it tomorrow sometime. I also have a Dana 35 out of an XJ in my car because I snapped an axle shaft going around a corner and couldn't find another one, one of the pluses of the Dana 35 is that I was able to use my original ring and pinion (3.08 ratio) and thus keep my car all wheel drive. The only modification I had to do to the axle to make it work in my Eagle was to swap the shock mounts to the opposite sides of the axle tube.

Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Wheels & Tires / Re: UTV Tires on an Eagle

Hadn’t thought of that, I guess for off road/farm use that would be an excellent idea.

Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Wheels & Tires / UTV Tires on an Eagle
« Last post by 89 MJ on October 05, 2024, 04:12:43 PM »
Anybody that has done off roading or wants to do off roading in their Eagle has probably looked for options for tires and has been thoroughly disappointed. There is not much available for all terrains or mud terrains in the sizing that fits on an Eagle, and the options that are out there are quite pricey. I did find though that UTV tires will work on an Eagle. Be sure to check the load rating to make sure they can support the weight of the Eagle. Lots of these are also not DOT approved, so they will need to be trail only tires. The DOT approved ones will wear out quickly as well, so they probably are not a great daily driving tire. I have ones that aren't DOT approved, so they don't see the roads, but they do give a ton of traction off road, as can be seen in the video below. They do look goofy on Eagles.

These tires can be cheap too. I found a set brand new on marketplace in the 27x8.50R15 size and got them for $350

The XJ springs will bolt in and I didn't have to change out the front bushing on the set I got. One thing to note is it did pull the rear axle in closer to the front of the vehicle by about an inch or two.
Good to know. Is there any chance you put the springs in backwards or was the center pin in the exact center between the spring eyes.

I had a chance to sit down and read through this with detail now. I agree with everything you said. I see you also added the CV axle info. Another thing to consider when adding larger tires is your gear ratios and axle strength. I have that in its own thread linked below, but I'll also give a brief summary. These Eagles have 2 piece rear axles that are pressed together with a nut and splines. Those splines stripped out on my car with 225/75R15 tires (roughly 28" tall). These cars came from the factory with highway gears that are terrible in stop and go traffic. Add larger tires and this gets even worse. This will also cause your transmission to build more heat and can wear it out quicker. I swapped to a Chrysler 8.25 out of an XJ with 3.54 gears because it is almost as strong as a Dana 44 and AMC engines were designed to spin 1000 rpm for every 24 mph, this gear ratio is close to that. I'd recommend 3.08s if you spend a lot of time on the highway in your Eagle.
