84 plain Jane eagle
« on: December 18, 2020, 06:51:43 PM »
Finally got another eagle.  Used to have an 85 limited that was fully loaded.  Tried buying it back... No deal. Found this 84 plain jane with no a/c or power windows.  It was local andnpriced decent.  Ive gotta repair the rear spring perches (rust) but the front frame horns and spring perches are good, she runs/drives/stops...  Here's to taking the plunge!

Congrats.! It's like dope, once you try it, you're hooked for life. I'm sure there's other people who've had more than me, I'm currently on my 5th one. I bought a new Kammback in '81 when I got back from Korea , traded it for a new wagon later. The one & only time I've ever sat down at the dealer & ORDERED anything speced out the way I wanted it. Got married the next summer & got outta the Army in Dec.. Ended up needing a pickup a couple years later & the Eagle had to go. Fast forward to 2010, the bug bit & I bought another wagon. It was sitting at a friend's house a few years later, waiting for 'his mechanic' to fix a short in the horn so I could get it inspected & got rear-ended. Bent the rear subframe & pushed the gas tank up till it was kissing the rear axle. Naturally, the ins. co. said 'totaled'. Bought one to replace that one, front subframe completely GONE!!!!! Rotted away. Sold that to a guy for parts & bought this one. Knew a little bit of the history on this one & was friends here with the guy that was selling it. We made a deal & a mutual friend delivered it. Has been good to me, had a few minor repairs done to it, nothing major & had the 'gronk' replaced with a REAL Motorcraft.

Shes home.  Drove her home 20 miles tonight. Runs good, lots of little things to fix but the radio works! Also noticed my 4wd selector says to stop the vehicle and pull the knob...i thought I remember these being shift-on-the-fly.  Anyway, super excited to have a eagle again...the drive home was worth the $600.

Shift-on-the-fly depends on the year. IF I recall correctly, it was '85 or '86 when they changed. My '81 didn't even have a switch. It was permanent. My first '82 had the 'stop-to-shift' switch, the '82 I had before this '83 had the 'stop-to-shift', the '86 I had before that didn't, IT WAS 'shift on-the-fly'. The '83 I have now IS  'stop-to-shift'.

You can change it to shift on the fly by locking the front disconnect in 4WD and redo the vacuum lines to run the actuator for the transfer case.http://amceaglesden.com/guide/Front_Axle_Lock.

Thanks! I don't mind stopping to shift.  Just wanted to make sure it was correct.

Great looking eagle. Looks like it could be restorable, or restomod?
