82 wagon help!!
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:26:45 PM »
Well im stumped, heres the issue/what ive done so far.

car: 1982 AMC eagle wagon 4.2l inline 6 with auto trans

Problem:
Car lacks power feels like car doesnt want to downshift to a lowergear for better acceleration, idles okay untill you put it in gear then it wants to die in any gear other than park or neutral.car struggles to get to 30-35mph

Things ive tried:
New carb
new fuel filter/pump-also blew out the lines with compressed air
new dis cap/rotor
new plugs/wires
fresh gas
replaced a few cracked vaccuum hoses
trans fluid looks good as well as level of fluid.

its a inline 6 4.2 liter with auto trans, the lady i bought it from had it sitting for two years is it somthing i just need to get out on the highway and run the :censored: out of to free up some sticking parts? if anyone knows anything about these or a good direction to go let me know im open to any ideas.the butterflys on the carb do open all the way with pedal put to the floor so the throttle linkage is okay.

Clogged cat? Stuck converter lockup?
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

I'd go through all the vacuum lines, vacuum leaks add up, and a big leak can cause it to die in gear, and re-adjust the transmission kick down too. It should downshift at full throttle based only on the throttle position and road speed.
