half shaft differences?

i pulled the half shafts off an 84 wagon yesterday and noticed the end that bolts to the axle was not sealed . the one i replaced on my 85 wagon was. was there a change between years or is this just variable based on the vendor?

Sometimes that end your talking about gets stuck to the axle.
