I apologize If this is on here somewhere, but what is the torque spec for the rear axle shaft nut on an 81 eagle wagon? I have ordered a manual but it's not here yet.

Isn't there a misprint on that in one of the books? I'm expecting ALL years to be the same, IN CASE there's a difference, I'm curious about an '83.

AMC's have been 250 foot pounds on the axle flange since the early days. Some manuals say "250"; while some say "250 min.". Don't know why the difference. I wouldn't go over 250, because you then may end up with the dreaded Eagle busted axle issue.

You fellows won’t believe this: I’m trying to remove the rear yoke nut to replace the pinoin oil seal on my Gremlin. It’s been there for 41 yrs. I’ve tried a portable electric lug gun which has done the eagle @ 120 lbs torque but I realize I'm dealing with over 200, pneumatic air gun @ 120 lbs, breaker bar with extended pipe to the floor for leverage, proto heavy duty torque wrench reversed direction, careful but solid hammer blows to the breaker bar, map gas heat applied for 10 - 20 min a few times, penetrating oil, I’ve gotten on the floor and braced myself and pushed the breaker bar with my legs as well as pulled it with both arms from the other side. My next idea is to line up the nut with the skid plate of the Eagle & to run a hand hoist with hooks between both cars. If I put tension on it for a couple of days it may loosen it up if it doesn’t strip the bolt first.

Holy Crap!! I've swapped out loads of pinion seals over the decades, and have never run into one like that!! Maybe one of those 3/4" drive earthquake guns??

Has anyone had any experience with those torque multiplier tools? If it can do pinion nuts like advertised lug nuts it would be a good tool to have. The video I saw made its use look simple except it didn't seem to have a ratchet type of handle. Of course once a nut it is loose another tool will work. It also looked somewhat large.

IMHO the good ones work. The cheap Chinese ones (the ones all over Ebay) only multiply the chance of the tool shattering into a zillion pieces!!

I may look into a decent multiplier or possibly renting one. I worked all day Saturday & accomplished nothing. When I got through the rear of car was moved over toward the passenger side of the ramps. No wonder my lower ribs & stomach muscles are sore today. I've got to start think smarter not physical. A 4 ft cheater bar just laughed at me. My last tool in the box is a grinder & I'm getting close to using it.

Good idea! Split the nut. use a small Dremel-ish cutoff disc, and cut a little slot in the nut (doesn't have to be very deep). Then whack the slot with a chisel until it splits (like splitting an axle bearing lock ring).

I've done that procedure before but I 've always had more working room. The yoke doesn't leave much room and the last thing I want to do is touch that shaft. I ordered a torque multiplier - used but still not cheap. I'll still need an adapter but they are available.
