Lord willing, I will be leaving Hesperia California on September 2 in my 1983 Eagle wagon headed East to Rhode Island, and then to the International Eagle Nest Meet at Mav's place. Let's call it a "Rhode Trip" I have till Sept. 16 to be back in So. Cal. I would like to take the time to visit as many Eagle Nest members as possible on the trip there, and back. I will be getting a trip map made soon, so I hope it will take me near you ('Nest members), and not far off the highway. I will bring my camera and computer so I can give a live travelog each day. I will post the route as soon as I can and you can let me know if you are not far of the route, so we can visit. Most likely I will have the most time to visit on the return trip. If you are planning to be at the meet at Mav's, I will meet you there and not on the road. One place I have planned already to visit on the return trip is the Rambler Ranch.
I was visited by a Mercedes Benz forum member recently, and that inspired me to try it. You can read all about Miguel's adventures here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=295832
I have not traveled by myself for this long before, so it will be a new experience for me. It should be fun, and I hope to meet many of the fine folks in this community.

Hey Rollguy,
If you come through Denver I'd love to meet you. Then we can swing down to the Rambler Ranch and see the TD Eagle! Its about 25 miles from my house. Maybe get Tougeagle, Shanebo and Maddog to join us!

Sounds like a plan. We could have a mini meet!
-
We'll see you at the meet.
-
if i can get Eagle Eyes highway ready by then i'm in.
-
If you come through the St. Louse area, let me know. Always interested in meeting fellow Nesters. Job schedule is kinda weird. Don't know what I'm doing week to week, get my schedule Tues. mornings. Also had a call from the V.A. today, starting next week, I'm going to be going to an 8 week class on Thurs. mornings. I'll send my phone# & address in a private message. Won't be able to show you my Eagle as it's at The M.E.N.S. waiting the EXTREME MAVERICKE MAKEOVER.
-

I may or may not get to meet you in person, but I will get to see your Eagle at Mav's.
-
Unfortunately, the last I heard from him he was STILL having issues getting the house in his name & getting the cement poured to do my paint job. Hoping he can get everything settled in time for the meet.
-
If you are in the Omaha Nebraska area give me a holler. I plan on being at the meet at Chas' place Friday and part of the day Saturday. Then I head to my Grandma's in Chicago.
-
if you swing through the Youngstown, OH (I-80) or Wheeling, WV (I-70) areas on the weekend let me know. May also be able to meet up during the week just about anywhere east of the missisippi - I'll give your itenerary some scrutiny when you post it.

I went to Auto Club the other day an got a trip map made. I also got camp and tour books to find campgrounds etc.
The rout I will be taking is: hwy 40 East to Oklahoma City, hwy 44 to St Louis, hwy 70 to Columbus, hwy 71 to Akron, hwy 80 to New York, and then hwy 95 to Rhode Island. The return trip will start out the same, except I will stay on hwy 80 until it intersects with hwy 76 to Denver. I will visit the Rambler Ranch, and then head home on hwy 70 to hwy 15.
I hope to visit as many 'Nest members as I can along the way. I will try to update my travels each day with photos on this thread. I will bring my laptop and camera, and will be visiting McDonald's & Starbucks quite often (internet connection)....Rich
-
Look forward to seeing you on your way through Colorado!
-
Hey Rollguy,
Is it an idea to pay a visit to Ken Proulx (amcconcord) on Rhode Island, while you are there?
You know the guy that came back from the dead?
-

Yes that is correct. A once in a lifetime chance to meet a miracle in the flesh.
-
lemmie know how your plaining to pass through pennsylvania and I'll meet ya somewhere, I am dang near in the center so I can get all around pretty easily ;D
-
I did some things today to get the car ready for the trip. Since I am planning to sleep in the car (saving a few buck$), I made a deck for sleeping on.
I cut the plywood so I still have access to the spare tire compartment:
I have a little storage also in the rear footwells:
-
I've considered removing the back seat for the trip to the meet to gain some storage. If I had thought of it while I had the wheel well trim out I may have considered removing the upright back seat, too.
-
I bet one of those truck bed air mattresses would fit in there nicely ;D

Post what cities you plan to sleep in and maybe there will be a Nest member who could give you a place to sleep.

I am going to buy a memory foam (Tempurpedic) topper.
-

Because I need to hurry east, I am just going to stop and sleep when I get tired. It would take too much time to plan each night. As it is, I will need to visit most of the 'Nest members on the return trip.
-
That plywood deck really looks good.
I have been considering this for some of my motorcycle "Treffens" (meets) as they call'm here.
-
an eagle with a sleeper? I must have.....
-
That's mostly how I spent my nights on my road trip :)
Well, it looks like you survived, so I think I will be alright.

I would like to know when your going to meet Ken, I am in eastern NY , and if it works out, would be interested in going to see him at the same time, work schedule permitting.

I am shooting for Sept 6th or 7th, but probably the 7th.

ok thanks, middle of the week, but then again I am self employed : )

Me, too! :eagle:

Looks like a great trip! I will not be making the meet this year :'( So, if you have time, swing by. I am about 25 miles north of I-80. (Grinnell exit).

I don't plan on having car trouble, I am driving an Eagle!
-
Change of plans! Unless something changes, I will NOT be driving to Rhode Island. I will not be able to meet Ken & Paula because of unforeseen circumstances. I WILL be driving to the Eagle Nest Meet, so I will have more time to visit 'Nesrers on the way there. If you are not far of the main highway, I can take time to meet you. I will still be taking the route that was originally planned. I will try to post photos and log my daily travels here on this thread......Rich
-
I am all packed and ready, and will be leaving as soon as I log off. The car set up for sleeping in the back:
(vangremlin, your bumpers will be safe sleeping next to me).

-
Have a safe trip! Looks like the bumpers are well cared for. I'll PM you my number and look for you on your way back!
-
Good luck, stay safe and have fun!
-
Bed looks comfy enough. Have a safe trip!
-
how far east are you coming? Just to the meet?
I can't make it to the meet now, delay in start of new job. Was hoping to meet you as you pass through my area.
have a safe trip!

I went next door and had breakfast at my favorite restaurant- Cracker Barrel:
I am at McDonald's in Williams AZ. I got a few photos of the Grand Canyon Railway:

The area around Williams/Flagstaff is very scenic and beautiful:
I am thinking I may make it into Oklahoma, or maybe Texas this evening. If you would like me to visit you on the trip (as long as you are not too far off the main highway), please call me: (626) 824-4404. Thanks, Rich
-
I love it! Keep the pictures coming.
-
google maps doesn't give me a N.Salem, just Salem. That's 20 minutes away.
mapquest showed a north salem twp. Off of I-77, at salt fork state park. Is this the one? Not too far of a drive for me...
-
I suppose Little Rock is out of your way, but if you get this far south let me know.
Looks like the timing will be off or we could have met up and made part of the trip together. We'll leave Wednesday.

Day 2 continued:
I was feeling a slight vibration, and thought I had a tire out of balance. I saw a tire shop with the worker sitting on a chair waiting for some business. I had him balance the front 2 tires:

Here at Mickey D's posting todays log:
I will probably be making a detour and driving north to visit with Brandon (83 Eagle!). Then to Ohio, and then to the meet. I may get to visit others as well if it works out....Rich
-
Thanks for the pictures, vibration gone now?
-
Since you're still out west, Happy Trails to you!
-
Thanks for the pictures, vibration gone now?
Not really, I think the problem is in the rear. I will try to find a place to do the rear soon.
-
Day 3 continued:
Entering Oklahoma:
Entering Kansas:
I saw several of these John Deere dealers along the highway. This was the smallest, as the others had a lot more green iron out front:
I just had to stop here and fuel up- Flying Eagle Gas:
Headed north now to Nebraska. Good night, and I will resume this log in the morning....Rich
-
Enjoy the drive roll guy I love the scenery. I wish I could make it out to the meet but my front end is not exactly highway worthy plus the whole work thing. Be safe and Have fun, Keep the pictures coming.
-
Heck yeah I would love to meet up with you guys...Keep me posted!
-
Got a call from Rollguy. He should be in my area anytime.
-
Day 4:
I made it into Omaha. Stayed last night at a truck stop. Well actually they call it a "Travel Center". I am headed over to Brandon's house a few miles away after I log out. I just realized, you don't even need to go inside McDonald's to use the free internet. I am sitting outside in the car. Only one photo so far, more later....Rich
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k13/rollguy/Eagle%20road%20trip/100_0529.jpg)
-
Glad it's going well. It sounds similar to my road trips. Lots of McDonalds. ;D
-
Day 4 continued:
Arrived at Brandon's house in time to go to church. The service was great, and not unlike the church I attend at home. After church we had a nice lunch at La Mesa mexican restaurant. The fish tacos tasted wonderful. Brandon's car is very similar to mine, in fact they are almost twins!
I am planing to drive to Ohio to visit relatives, and maybe get a chance to visit Sean (sleepsundercars)....Rich
-
Rich just called and he is stopping by tomorrow a.m. I hope my directions won't get him lost.
-
I probably will have to meet you on the road on thursday....leaving out early tuesday morning but I will load wednesday night at normal IL headed to Baltimore. I will be coming across I-74, I'm assuming you will leave n.salem and take I-70 through columbus and to Indy then I-74 out to Galesburg.
-
Doug! I've lost your number... really been meaning to reach you man give me a holler!
Sean, does that mean you're making the Meet afterall!? That'd be sweet!
-
no Mav, have to load @ Mitsoshitty in Normal and have them in Baltimore friday night. Then they will head to Saudi.

Gotcha.

Change of plans. After I visit IE, I am free. I will not be visiting my relatives. I can be in Ohio sometime on Tuesday.
-
See you tomorrow. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, Mav is thinking about coming over later in the week to pick up that big AMC sign. Maybe he can use some extra muscle as my lifting, hauling days are pretty much over.
-
Well if your going that far north. Well anyway just thinking i'm sort of straight east. Minus, our big inland lake winnebago. Just sayong google my location if inroute. I workmonday and tuesday night this week. Than the weekend.
-
Day 4 continued (again):
I left Brandon's a little after 6:00 and crossed over into Iowa:
Iowa is a very beautiful state along the highway. There is a lot of corn growing. All I see is "corn, corn, corn" (can anyone tell me what movie that line is from?):
I will meet Doug (Iowa Eagle) in the morning, and then head out to meet Sean (sleepsundercars).
I may have to find a radiator shop on the road that can fix the small leak. I am just adding coolant for now, and I hope it does not get worse. I have the banner for the meet, as Brandon will not be able to make it this year.....Rich
-
Corn, corn, corn and Beans, beans beans.
-
Corn, corn, corn and Beans, beans beans.
OK, What movie? and I will add, what actor?
-
Would the actor be Clint Eastwood?
-
Rich, it was great to meet you. Thank you for joining us today. Glad we noticed that leak and topped you off before you left. Thank you for your help with the license plate light and the mounting bracket. I'll head over to Kenny's and use the drill press and bench grinder and finish it up.
I wish I could hire you (and a few others on here for a week or so). I know I would learn a lot.

You are very welcome. I really enjoy fabricating and making things work. BTW, thanks for the coolant.

I really enjoy fabricating and making things work.
I have a special surprise (I fab'd for the Eagle) for those that will be at the meet. Brandon has seen it, and I am sure everyone will want one. What I am saying, is EVERYONE needs to come to the meet!

I want one. Just let me know how much.
You're welcome for the collant. Glad I had it in the garage. That was really low.

Here are some photos from Rich's visit today...
Here's a shot of Rich fabricating...

Here are some pictures of Rich and my 83 Eagles. These eagles are identical in options and
color. My wife took a picture of them on her phone and texted it to friends with the caption "Lord Help me." That made me laugh.
They're twins...

I want to report that I have gotten an average of 22.3 MPG up to the last tank. I filled it with "Super" (cheaper than regular unleaded= contains ethanol), and only got 20.08 MPG. I think I will not use this again, probably not worth the 10 cents less per gallon. Besides, the car idles at about 1,000 RPM (no changes to the carb adjustment)
-
So Rich, which way are you headed to Sean's? You may be coming right through here and we could grab a bite to eat or something. If you're going through the Chicago area up by Rochelle where 88 meets 39... I could use your services and repay you with hugs and beer... or beer and hugs... or you know - whatever works, lol!
I need to make a trip to Doug's before the Meet to pick up the goodie bags and signs. I also need to swing up to Rochelle and pick up some parts in the next day or two. They are both in opposite directions. If you're going through/near Chicago - would you be willing to make a quick stop for me? OR OR OR, you could just grab the goodie bags from Doug and then I could just wait and hit him up after the Meet for the signs. Either one would take a load off and really help out. It'd work out much better if you were swinging through Rochellle though (outside Chicago), because I've been promising to make it up to Dougs all summer and I really need to get my rear up there and clean out some space for him. But hey, either way - if you're able/willing to do either, I promise that I won't steal any parts off of your wagon when you arrive! :P

I would be happy to pick up the parts in Rochelle, and help move the signs on one condition: The Eaglenest needs to hire me as an employee and I demand double the pay that Doug gets. That is the only way, take it or leave it....Rich
-
PK -- just this one time we will pay double time. Heck, I will give twice what everyone else gets, combined.
-
I can probably help here....i will be coming through Rochelle on my way to Normal. If Rich and I are going to meet there I can, as long as the parts in Rochelle can be delivered to me @ the petro truckstop. Or maybe I can meet up with Rich there..... Should be there wednesday evening.
-
Day 5:
I spent the night in a truck stop in Marshalltown Iowa next to a McDonald's (sorry no photo). On the way to Doug's, I spotted an Eagle on the other side of the road. After an evasive maneuver, I crossed the center median and went back to take a photo:
I arrived at Doug's place:
He told me about the Eagle I saw, and that the guy has a few others as well (a Kamback). Doug said the guy will not sell them, or join the Eaglenest.
I got to see the Eaglenest Headquarters (where all the hiring and firing is done):
Not sure where I am going next. I have time to spare now that I am not going to visit my relatives.....Rich
-
Long about Thursday late, I should be somewhere around Des Moines or Davenport. Keep an eye out for an 88 brown woody wagon with Canadian plates. Should be ready to stop by then:) Mark
Are you going to the meet? If not, maybe I can drive somewhere to meet you....Rich
-
Nice visit this morning and early afternoon with rollguy (Rich). He is headed East on his trek towards the Meet. I did load him up with a few more items so I hope he has room enough to sleep. I believe his plan is to go to Mavericke's today as his radiator is leaking. It appears there is a crack in the upper hose fitting, so it may be repairable at some later date. He may come back with Mav either before the meet or on his way back to load up the big dealership sign. I have a purchaser for the used car sign so that will stay (the proceeds will go back into the Nest). Of course, I forgot to take any pictures of our visit. I think he got a couple while he was here.
-
Day 5 continued:
I had a nice visit with Doug today. On the trip to Mav's place, I drove by the Iowa 80 truck stop (photo later). This is an awesome place! (been there before). It is the largest truck stop on the planet, and is like a small city!
I stopped at my favorite restaurant again (Cracker Barrel of course):
Entering Illinois:
On the road to Mav's place, I saw MORE CORN!
Tomorrow I will be doing some work with Chas around here to get ready for the meet. We will fix my radiator as well....Rich
-
Glad you made it to Mavericke's. Hope the radiator repair goes well.
-
Good to hear you made it there safely. How much coolant did you lose?
-
Good to hear you made it there safely. How much coolant did you lose?
Not much. I think the cool weather helped to keep most of the coolant inside. I did not need to run the A/C, so the temp gauge was in the middle of the green the whole time.
-
Day 6:
I woke up to a beautiful day and took a photo of the cars at Mav's:
We will be doing a few chores around here (one is fixing my radiator), and then I may be driving to Ohio. I may be going to see my aunt and uncle after all....Rich
-
Day 6 continued:
After helping Chas load a few things in his truck, I headed out to the interstate towards Ohio. Entering Indiana:
I am at McDonald's in Indianapolis posting (no need for a photo, you all know what a McDonald's looks like LOL!)
I am headed to my relatives house near Ashland Ohio off I71. I will probably sleep at a "Travel Center" tonight, and arrive at the relatives tomorrow morning. On the way back, I am going to pick up some parts for Chas in Rochelle Illinois. Then to the M.E.N.S. for the International Eagle Nest Meet. Hope to see you all there (well, maybe some of you)....Rich
-
Glad you made it to Mavericke's. Hope the radiator repair goes well.
I decided to just drive and maybe have it fixed on the road. We could not get it repaired in town till Thursday at the local radiator shop. It has not leaked out much, as it has bee cool.
-
Are you leaving the rad cap loose?
No, it seems to do fine in cold weather. There must be a leak only with high pressure in the cooling system from hot weather.
-
Day 7:
I made it as far as Dayton Ohio last night. I stayed at the Pilot and woke up to a cool rainy morning. I then went next door to McDonald's for breakfast and internet.
I only got 19 MPG on the last tank (BP), probably because of the Ethanol. Maybe the car gets better MPG when running hot? I would rather the car run cooler and sacrifice MPG....Rich
-
Well, I have been on vacation with no internet. But did a jam catch up on this thread this morning.Way cool Rollguy !!! What an awesome trip !!Makes me want to just roll out to the meet, Eagle or not.I can't even remember what state it is in ,lol,as I never thought of going.Plus it's early , and on my first cup of coffee.Really cool trip, sorry you couldn't make it to see Ken,bummer.
-
Do you know where the radiator is leaking from? My daughters Grand Cherokee was leaking all winter and I couldn't figure out where(about a quart per week). Fiinally put a new radiator cap on it and no more leaking - duh. Sounds like a great trip. Will see you at the Meet.
-
Do you know where the radiator is leaking from?
I think the upper hose connection. It must be expanding when hot. It should be able to be repaired without removing the radiator.
-
Day 7 continued:
On the way to relatives I saw an Amish horse and buggy on the road:
I hear there quite a few Amish communities in Ohio. I also saw a large farm tractor on the same road! What a contrast of vehicles!:
On the road after visiting relatives, I saw more corn! (what else?):
Wait, that's not corn!
I guess not. Soy beans (I am told).
Tomorrow, I will be meeting Sean (sleepsundercars) I hope. I will be meeting the guy to pick up parts in De Kalb on Thursday morning. Thank you McDonald's for the FREE internet connection!...Rich
-
Looks like the Amish were dodgeing the camera shot while still steering the cart, lol.
-
They keep saying, "invest in soybeans its the future"
rollguy so now we know not to put you in charge of the garden.
-
Looks like the Amish were dodgeing the camera shot while still steering the cart, lol.
the Amish don't like having their picture taken as it is against their beliefs.
-

That makes sense to me.

day 7 continued (again):
I had to stop and take this photo. A gas station sign on an Ohio country road:
Is that coffee high octane?
Day 8:
I drove to DeKalb Illinois last night and stayed in a McDonald's parking lot. I am here this morning posting. I will meet Sean (sleepsundercars) this morning for breakfast and a photo. Then to head out to meet the guy to pick up parts for Chas. My battery is going dead, so I will charge it at the M.E.N.S. later and post again.......Rich

That makes sense to me.
Yes, that is true.Posted it for the curious. There are several Amish communities in the area here, some more stricter than others it seems.Nice folk though, very nice. They have the community way down pat.

rich couldn't find a place to park when we met, so we made one:
(http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/SleepsUnderCars/th_CIMG0121.jpg) (http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/SleepsUnderCars/?action=view¤t=CIMG0121.jpg)
-
no, I can do that every weekend in the driveway..lol.
-
Day 8 continued:
On the way to meet Sean, I got some photos of some grain storage facilities:
After finding a place to park at the Petro, I got a shot of Sean and his rig:
I was talking to Sean about the need to charge my computer battery before I could post again. He said he had a small inverter that he would give me:
The inverter works great! My computer battery was charged in about 60 miles of driving. I am at the M.E.N.S. now, waiting for folks to arrive. I will post photos and such on the Eagle Nest Meet thread: http://forums.amceaglenest.com/index.php?topic=36513.0 until I leave on Sunday. See you all back here on Sunday!....Rich
-
I'm glad the inverter works for you. And I'm happy we were able to meet up! I will be at the meet in spirit...
-
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k13/rollguy/Eagle%20road%20trip/100_0554.jpg)
I just noticed the sign has my name on it!
-
You took that long to notice haha. I originally thought that was your reasoning.
Admit rollguy you just wanted to roll over a semi
-
no, I can do that every weekend in the driveway..lol.
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
-
Rich, I am glad you and Sean got to meet up. Great photos.
-
And now back to our regularly scheduled road trip.
Day 11:
Those of us that stayed at Mav's (Rick, Earl and I), Jim and WonderEagle left the sanctuary today headed home. I got an email the other day from my wife, and she asked me if I'd seen any corn on this trip (asking in jest I am sure!). Well, today on the road out of town, the road was blocked by a couple slow moving vehicles. A John Deer combine and tractor pulling a large grain hopper turned into the road next to a cemetery.
I turned around and parked and went over to talk with the two guys and take some photos (have not seen one of these machines up close). I met Bob (combine driver), and Jim (hopper driver). I asked a few questions, and Jim said "hop aboard and go for a ride". I asked, Really?. He introduced me to Bob (he was entering info into a computer). I climbed the ladder and closed the door.
Bob worked the machine into the rows of corn (I think that is what it is called):
We went down the rows about a quarter mile and came back:
Jim riding outside looking out for things that should not be there (Bob and I were riding inside in cold A/C!):
Looking through the back window as corn was filling the hopper:
This machine measures moisture (of the grain), amount of bushels, and other important things and displays it on a computer screen:
Unloading grain into the hopper rig:
This was one of the coolest things I have had the opportunity to do! My battery is going dead, so I will post later.....Rich
-
Rich, that's one of the coolest things I have heard of. I grew up around combines and cotton pickers and getting sprayed by crop duster planes, but I don't believe I've actually been in a combine or cotton picker.
My hat's off to you.
-
Day 11 continued:
I was not able to get a photo of the Iowa 80 truck stop on the way east, so I got a few on the way west:
Here is another load of John Deere green iron going to some cotton picki'n field somewhere:
I got a few photos of a wind farm in Iowa:
These wind turbines only turn about 6 RPM (yes, about 10 seconds per full revolution). Unlike here in Iowa, the wind farms in California have hundreds of turbines per square mile.
I will probably make it to Denver tomorrow evening, and then the next day have a mini-meet at the ranch (Rambler Ranch)......Rich
-
there are some of those wind turbines here in colorado to. as for the mini meet i wish i could make it but i don't have the money to make it that far north. :(
-
Rich, looks like we were on the same stretch of I-80 yesterday at the same time. Surprised we didn't cross paths. We ate lunch at the Iowa 80 truck stop yesterday and I remember passing a couple those big John Deere Combines.
Saw a few AMCs on the way out of Illinois. Almost right in a row on the other side of the highway I saw an Eagle, 2 AMXs, a Spirit and a big 2 door Rambler (Rebel Machine-I'm not sure).
-

I was wondering if I would see you on the highway, as I thought I would be traveling through there the same day as you.
-
Yeah we were probably far enough distance apart that we had not chance of running into each other.
-
Day 12:
I got to Denver today, and called a few acquaintances to see if I could visit. I called Jerre, a guy that has a player piano repair shop. He and I are both members of AMICA (Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors Association). I wanted to see his shop:
and also his 1960 Lincoln Mark 5 in person (I have only seen photos):
He has owned this car for 15+ years, and is just about finished restoring it. I told him I was going to the Rambler Ranch tomorrow, and he told me that he knows Terry. He said Terry has seen his Lincoln before it was restored. I will show Terry the photos.
I took the Eagle to a self serve car wash today to wash off the Nebraska bugs:
I will get lots of photos tomorrow at the Rambler Ranch....Rich
-
I am jealous that you are going to the Rambler Ranch. I want to see it someday.
AMICA (Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors Association)
I had not heard of the group before. Sounds like his shop would be something I would like.
-

There are many collectors in the group that are "car guys" as well. It seems that cars and antique instruments go together somehow.

Nice to see you are having a good trip. Stay safe and keep the pics coming!

I have 40+ photos from the Rambler Ranch. I will start another thread, and put the link here.

Rich you have two days to beat me home :rotfl: I made 591 miles today and two days should see me home. Have a safe one :)
I should be home tomorrow (Wednesday).....Rich

Day 12 continued:
On my way to visit my friends in Littleton Colorado, I saw this on a railroad track next to the road:
I spent the night at my friends house, and the next morning met Dave (vangremlin) at his work. I followed him to the Rambler Ranch on day 13. Please view the Rambler Ranch thread:
http://forums.amceaglenest.com/index.php?topic=36541.0
Day 13 continued:
Traveling on I70 in Colorado is very scenic. Photo of tailings from an old mine:
More scenic I70:

Eagle Colorado:
The trip will be done tomorrow, so I will post the final segment then. I will figure out my total miles driven, and average MPG......Rich
-
Rich, those aircraft fuselages were within walking distance of my place.
They're not the first ones to have come through...I first noticed them in mid-July sitting there. It's not uncommon for trains to sit there all weekend and then disappear in the middle of the night.
After we parted ways Tuesday I headed down there to that same road on my way home. A bit further south there was another train sitting there with wind turbine blades on board. At ground level those blades are HUGE!. They easily were as long as two railroad flatcars. :eagle:
-
Great trip documentation. The Rambler Ranch is great! Went last year and loved it. Sounds like your having a great trip and meeting lots of Eagle folk on the way.
-
Day 13: I spent the night at a truck stop in Parowan Utah. I drove to my favorite restaurant (you guessed it!) Cracker Barrel for breakfast:
Entering Arizona:
Traveling south on I15 through the corner of Arizona (only 30 miles) is a very scenic canyon:

I got a photo of the world's tallest thermometer in Baker California:
I got home about noon today (Wednesday). I calculated my total mileage traveled, and MPG. Total miles is 14 short of 5,600 (5,586) and an average of 21.6 MPG for the trip. Average cost for gas was $3.55 per gallon.
I had a great time meeting 'nest members, and also had a fun time at the AMC Nationals. The visit at the Rambler Ranch was way cool as well. Thanks everyone for helping to make this a very enjoyable trip.....Rich
-
thanks for the fabulous documentation of your trip!
I have to admit that I am jealous, maybe someday I'll have the time/money to do something like this.....

I'll second that. Rich, thanks for stopping by it was wonderful to meet you. Thank you for all your help on the Eagle.
-
Glad to hear you made it home safe. It was great to meet you, maybe we'll see you next year at the cruise to the Eagle Motel!
-
I miss that arizona corner. Its been awhile
-
Very cool trip Rich! Shelly and I are now talking about a similar trip next year... I want to see all the famous "alien" sites like they did in that new alien movie "Paul". I'd get a real kick out of that!
-
I had to do the math there Rich, it seems you used 258 Gallons of gas :rotfl: :occasion14: Great trip and write up!

Wow! I did not even notice that! Good thing I wasn't running an Iron Duke! (it may have gotten less MPG)
-
Glad you made it home safe. I bet you'll appreciate your bed a little more after sleeping in the back of the Eagle for a couple weeks.

Yes, but the bed in the Eagle was VERY comfortable (4" thick memory foam). I have slept on worse many times.

Rollguy...those aircraft fuselages are Boeing 737s. They're headed for Washington to grow wings :eagle:

I would have thought that they are too wide to travel on the railroad, but I guess not!

All I see is "corn, corn, corn" (can anyone tell me what movie that line is from?):
Anyone?? I will give you a hint: Robert Duvall played a part in the movie.
-
"Corn, corn, corn -- nothing but corn"
Secondhand Lions ;D my daughter and me love that movie.

I really enjoy fabricating and making things work.
I have a special surprise (I fab'd for the Eagle) for those that will be at the meet. Brandon has seen it, and I am sure everyone will want one. What I am saying, is EVERYONE needs to come to the meet!
It has been a while since this trip, and I forgot to show everyone the surprise! I was so busy at Mav's and the car show, that I forgot to take photos. I went camping over New Years and took a few photos:

Brandon was the first to see it, and here it is for the rest of you. I will do a complete write up and post the link....Rich

I would love to have one of those. Finally, now I can post the pics I took of the tent set up in my driveway.
Nevermind, not going to post the pics I took. They are not as nice as the ones already posted by Rollyguy.
-
Hey, thats really cool...where did you get that?

Rollguy made it himself.
-
Hey, thats really cool...where did you get that?
Rollguy made it himself.
I bought a $30.00 tent from K Mart and modified it to fit the back of the wagon. This one is actually my second try. The first one I used the wrong thread on my home sewing machine, so I bought another tent (did not have time to take it apart and re-sew it because I was leaving the next day for the meet). I used my commercial walking foot sewing machine on the second tent, and it worked much better. One day I will fix the original tent and have it for sale. I may even buy a couple more tents and mass produce them. By the fourth or fifth one I should have it figured out!
-
Sign me up for one. Of course I need to figure out where to get struts for the hatch that actually hold up the hatch. IIRC this is my third set that has not worked. Wish I could have returned them, but O'Reilly's would not take them back.
-
If it had an amc logo on it would swear it was an aftermarket factory thing.
-
SO totally awsome. how close would that fit to an sx4??? lol. i dont have a wagon. just 2 sx4's. i dont camp in them. just beside. friggin AWSPME tho!!!!
After seeing how it connects to the Eagle in person I would imagine a tent could be made to fit an SX/4. I'd bet since the hatch of the wagon and the hatch of the SX/4 are at different angles and lengths one would have to be made slightly differently for an SX/4
