Title: Stock audio system replacement idea...hmmm
Post by: Nightpath on September 10, 2015, 11:16:35 AM
I've been thinking about replacing my replacement for my stock stereo since I'm gutting the interior again, replacing all the speakers, wiring, etc. I've been debating installing a Raspberry Pi for a while, then looked at a cheap tablet, until this came out :

7" touchscreen for the Raspberry Pi, which is a nifty little computer ( http://swag.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-2-model-b )
Power for the Pi : http://www.mausberrycircuits.com/collections/car-power-supply-switches

I can picture this being a really solid mod for the stereo, install a few hidden USB slots in the dash to slide sticks, etc into. It'd really be nice for long trips and the like.

What do you all think?

You will still either need a stereo installed somewhere or an amplifier. Also, if you want FM radio, you will have to do a little more work. But besides that, it would be a great way to make your eagle feel more modern.

Keeping the stock stereo is part of the plan, just keep it mounted behind the screen. My current stereo has a AUX port which would be used to send audio from the Pi to the stereo.

My idea is to have the screen mounts stick out about 1" from the stereo, figure a way to make kind of a swivel to adjust it up/down and able to get at the "hidden" stereo.

I have enough Eagle dashes to make this happen I think, might look pretty awesome sitting in a old wagon ;)

Also, you'll probably want to get a switch for clean power downs when you turn off the ignition. Something like one of these:

Yep, I put that in my original post a minute after I posted it.

I'd say for $120 I could have a helluva good multimedia system, with the ability to add in back up cameras, GPS, wifi for when I want to use my phone as a hotspot and the Pi as a PC...all sorts of cool things.
