There is a clip. That retains it.

yeah right, turned 51 last year,hahaha....,i did see the clip but never seen that it was fixed with a screw on the outside, take the screw out and the lock came out,i have never seen this kind of clips before, but heck everything seems to be different on an eagle that's why we love them, and sometimes hate them......

Clips are pretty much a standard to retain locks.

  • If a hammer won't fix it, it's probably electrical

I've had mine out.

You should take out the wiper motor (if you have one) to get easy access to the lock.  Take the wiper off, the large thin nut behind the wiper arm, then inside the tailgate, take off that plastic skirt, then three bolts/screws and the wire connector.

there's a little screw on a metal tab that sticks out close to the edge of the bottom of the tailgate, unscrew that, then pull/wiggle the metal tab straight out.

Your lock will practically fall out now.  Do the reverse to put back together.

I don't know about the little tab on the back of the lock (that works the mechanism) but I believe that those locks are common General Motors locks.
