1986 Eagle 4.2 L engine color
« on: April 13, 2012, 05:47:48 PM »
I did a quick search but couldn't find the answer; what color was the 1986 4.2 L engine?

Thanks.

Thanks, Bud.  I checked some of the Jeep sites, and found somewhat conflicting information.  Everyone agreed that from 1984 on, the engines were painted black, and for 1982, they were AMC engine blue (Ditzler #14688).  However, the information I found for 1983 was that they were either AMC engine blue, or they were black.

Fits with my personal experience, the 85 Wagon is black engine, the 82 SX/4 is Blue

If it helps at all, every SX/4 that I have owned have been blue. I've had two 82's and an 83. My current 82 is blue from the oil pan to the vave cover. At least the areas where there is still paint ::)

That sounds correct, 1983 was the "change over" year for the engine paint color. Early built motors may have been blue with the majority being the "new" black color.

Thanks, all.  Next question: was the black gloss, semi-gloss or flat?  I'll probably use gloss; it should be easier to keep clean.

I thought most engine paints are enamel so they will be a gloss finish. Unless it is a ceramic base or something. If it comes out too glossy for you, you could hit it with a little light sanding to dull it. I'd prefer glossy though and it sounds like you may as well. Pictures please!

This is actually my son's car.  We'll try to get some before, after and in-progress pictures posted.

Strange,I bought a 82 eagle wagon new right off the dealer showroom floor and the motor was black. Have pictures of the car new but no under hood pictures. But it was black!
