Title: My "New" 1980 Spirit AMX
Post by: Budwisr on February 25, 2012, 12:49:32 PM
Just got this delivered this week. I haven't had time to play with it yet. Bought it off Craigslist out of Ohio. It has 6700 miles. Yes they are suppose to be original miles. Being an 1980 is is a 6 cylinder car, but it does have a 4 speed so it should be a fun driver. Can't wait for good weather!

WOW! That's insane. Good find. Ridiculously low mileage...how could you own that car for that long and not put more than 6700 miles on it? How much did you pay if you don't mind us(me) asking?

I've seen that movie maybe twice. The quote just seemed appropriate for a change.

the sad part is i've seen all three movies a dozen or so times each that and the fact that i can actually talk like smeagol doesn't help.

Well I'm still trying to figure if I paid too much. First time I've bought a car sight unseen, or at least the first one I've paid more then a couple hundred dollars for with out viewing in person. I had an independent inspection service look it over but after seeing the car in person and the photos they took, I think they were working for the seller ::). It may have only 7K miles on it but I think it was poorly stored at one period in it's life. Anyhow, I paid a little bit more then what it cost new, and it does need more than I planned. So much for a "ready to go" ride I was hoping for. Oh well it still should be fun.

Boy, I could sure live with the estimated fuel cost over 15k/yr....Does it have the "Deep tone" exhaust the 4spd 80's allegedly came with???

Id say ya did all right!! Its a rare car and it a beauty at that! Ive seen a couple for sale on the net going for $10,000+. Like I always say a cars value is in the eyes of the beholder....I wouldnt pay a half million for an original Shelby Cobra, but if thats your thing then its worth every penny....Being a die hard AMC fan I think you got a smokin deal.

Yeah, the 4 speeds came with the deep tone muffler and it does sound good, even the guy that hauled it for me commented on how good it sounded. It does start and run very nice. Drives pretty good too.  My 5 speed SX/4, with it's lower axle ratio is also much more fun to drive- although does not corner as well as the Spirit AMX. Still no comparsion at all to my 70 AMX, of course, but it will be cheaper to drive.

Let's bring this beauty back to the top! Tell us more about it. How's it been for you now that you've had it for awhile? You said that it just showed up in your original thread. Did you have it shipped/towed to you? How much did that cost ya? Great looking car man. I hope it's back on the road. Sure is nice!

Thanks. I really haven't driven as much as I planned. This last summer i spent detailing under the hood since it didn't look it's mileage. Someone spray bombed the engine Ford blue among other things. Anyway I'm trying to decide if I should take it to the BIG Kenosha event this summer. Here are more recent photos from a club picnic. Oh and shipping was $1.00 a loaded mile (open transport)

Great pics man. She sure is gorgeous! Maybe you are a purist, but it sure would look good with some 20% tint all the way around! :)

Planning on tint, if I ever get to it.

Awesome, tint is the first thing I usually do to a car I purchase. Instantly gives it more visual appeal. Will really set off the black accents in the paint job and other parts of the car!

That is sexier than hellll. Gorgeous. I love Spirit AMX's. And, it is the optimum drivetrain I think; the I6 with a stick. I just like the servicability of the I6 better than a V8. And, we all know that the 258's can be built up pretty nicely, even if they end up being 4.0's  ::)

I LOVE the purple and blue seats.  I don't suppose that was factory original eh?

I was a little unsure on those seats myself. I'm wondering if it's just a white balance issue with the camera... or possibly just some black seats that have faded a bit in the years of sun.

I am thinking they were black to start with.

Yep, you're all right . They are kind of "bluish" but the photo makes them look a little more purple then they really are. They are the "Caberfae" corduroy which are known to have faded quickly, but from the conditon of this car, it had to have sat outside during some point in it's life. (somewhat thin paint and some pitted chrome) Not sure if i'm going to redye them or leave them, as a lot of people seem to like the color and they don't look like they're faded as the color is very even.

It's the windshield tint giving it that purple color
