Title: Iowa Eagle's SX/4
Post by: IowaEagle on May 08, 2004, 11:40:00 PM
My Eagle is a 1982 SX/4 Sport.  It was sold new on May 24, 1982 by Zimmerman AMC/Jeep/Renault located in Freeport, Illinois.  Sticker price was $10,480.00.  I purchased it last August, from the original owner for $1,000.  At that time it had just about 66,000 miles on it.  As far as I can tell the car has not had any mods done to it and is the way it was when first delivered. Since my purchase I have replaced all the tires; replaced the torque converter and flex plate; replaced the passenger side half shaft; reinstalled the original AM/FM radio; and resealed the valve cover.  Presently the 4WD does not work as the vacuum lines need to be replaced, however the Transfer Case and vacuum motors do all work.

Modifications --

None

Future Plans --

Work to be done this spring/summer:  Replace hatch lifts; replace right side hinges (spares came with car); repaint car to original colors; and renew 4wd vacuum lines and engine vacuum lines.

And here is the line setting (build sheet) ticket.  It is in real poor shape and very fragile.

Here is what I said in another post last week:  First fill-up since I removed pump its plumbing and some other smog related stuff.  Guessing about 70% Highway and 30% City and AC about 1/2 time.  341 miles/13.3 gallons = 25.64 mpg.  Which is a mile and 4 tenths off my previous highway only mpg (27), with no AC -- so I think the next all highway trip should net 29-30 or maybe even better with a tail wind.    Heck there are not too many 2WD cars that you can get for that price -- but in '82 that was a lot of money for a mderately optioned out car.  And, $208 for a push button AM/FM radio -- of course you did get four $5.00 speakers with that.

You mean they were around until a couple of our members who shall be nameless (but you know who you are!) started trying to corner the market.
Just joking.  Keep checking here.  Some will turn up.

Original colors should be pretty sweet! Engine bay still silver?
Is it white in the current pics?

The first picture was at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Des Moines (approx 200 cars) and the second at Duffy's Collectible Cars in Cedar Rapids (approx 150 cars).  Duffy's gave us AMC'ers probably the best spot of anybody.

Engine bay is mostly black now.  There is still some silver in places as well on the inside of the doors, etc.  That will change eventually.

Nah!  We got there fairly early and they really thought it was neat that we all came together.  But we do that so folks can see Kenosha Iron in all in the same spot.  Kind of backfired on us at the Huge Vinton Show and Cruise (400+ cars).  Nine of us arrived at the same time and were guided to one of the lots and since we were the first ones to be put in that lot we ended up in the back row -- but we figured thats just how it was for AMC's in the used car lots in the old days.  Really, it was not a bad spot because by time folks got to us they just lingered and drooled.   If I remember right there was a J10, two Eagles, an AMX, 4 Javelins, and a Gremlin.

To paraphrase a great songwriter....Sometimes you get the golg mine sometimes you get the shaft!

As long as you get the better of them in the end and have fun!

When I had the 73 Chevelle I got stuck in the rear at many shows, even though I had the only 11sec car with show quality paint and interior. Used to pull the pipes and crank it over during the awards presentation to get em back(I know...but I was MUCH younger and not quite as smart)

Well if it's similar to an"old" AMC muscle color scheme I think it's great....In fact HOT!
If not I'm WAAAAAY off!
Title: Re: Iowa Eagle's SX/4

You are on the right track.  You ought to see the interior of a certain AMC muscle car.  The inside follows the outside.  I will try to remember to get pix this year -- the owner is battling cancer so he only made it to one show that I was at.  Apparently he is doing much better.  That is a hard car to drive -- no PS, really stiff clutch, and for some reason does not idle well or like to go slow.

One tailight still has a hint of chrome (replacement?) and the other does not -- the picture makes it look a lot brighter than it actually is.  I painted over the pin striipes on the back as I did not like them.  Should have removed them but you can barely tell they are there.

If you are a patient old man, you can always get some of that chrome tape that is used on the rockers an take your time and recover them with it.
If the work is done right it looks great.

Patience has not been a virtue of mine lately.  But things are better now that I finally turned in a huge work project to the State folks today.  In fact going to Omaha this weekend for a work related conference will kind of be like a mini vacation.

Anyway, don't want any chrome on my car.  What little bit that is left is just fine with me.

I don't like all that chrome on some of my Eagles either.  It is ok on the Woodies but not so nice on the black Eagles.

I am going to repaint my "new" SX/4 one of these days.  And I am thinking of repainting one of the black Eagles too.

For the SX/4 I was thinking of the original silver/gray (or whatever that color is called), matte black for the hood center section, matte black lowers and stern, matte black flairs, and matte black trim around lights etc.

How do you find driving that hi contrast hood?  I don't want a bright reflecting hood so I was thinking of the matte black centre section as long as the contrast is not distracting or tiring.

Is there good paint available to paint those flairs?  I suppose it has to be flexible.  Any special surface prep?

I really like the way your SX/4 turned out.  Please keep the stern in "stealth" mode.  It looks  great... to me at least!

Beautiful SX4 ,I was wondering tho....Is that valve cover original? I seem to have the same bolt pattern on my 87 but mines plastic and got a leaky gasket :-[
Title: Re: Iowa Eagle's SX/4

Sounds like you are doing about what I did.  I used a thinned oil-based black agricultural/equipment paint on all black areas (a whole lot cheaper than automotive paints).  In fact it has stuck better on the krayton than any where else -- but overall has stuck well all over.  I did pick up a quart of Rustoleum smoke gray gloss to test out.  Its darker than the OE silver mist my car was.  But I think it will look nicer.

I get no noticeable glare from the black "power bulge".  Its a bear to get masked off right on the front curve and I need to tweak mine a bit when I redo it.

No its the replacement us guys/gals use for the nasty plastic covers.  It will not work on the late heads -- '88 for sure and it sounds like your '87 unless that is one of the replacement ones.

Thanks ,I'll have to investigate a little further.I was going to have it installed but I noticed my plastic one was wider and fewer bolt holes than my aluminum one.

So this got 25-30 mpg with no mods? A plain old 82 SX/4 Sport 6 Cylinder with an auto tranny. Would the 5 speed manual do the same?
Title: Re: Iowa Eagle's SX/4
Post by: IowaEagle on August 22, 2006, 06:30:37 PM
Some emissions related mods and the TFI upgrade.   But nothing really radical or what anybody else could not do over a weekend -- depending where you love.  The five speed should do well -- mostly depends on your axle ratio.
Title: Re: Iowa Eagle's SX/4
Post by: siguy8 on August 22, 2006, 07:04:47 PM
OK. Where do I find out what the axle ratio is and what axle ratio is the best for mileage? Thanks.
Title: Re: Iowa Eagle's SX/4
Post by: IowaEagle on August 22, 2006, 08:03:46 PM
2.35 is the best ratio, offered in the AMC Eagle, for MPG.   The code is stamped on the right side axle tube boss in the rear and on a tag attached to the differential cover in front.  You will want to look for a "L", "J" , "F" or "E".  L is 2.35; J is 2.73; F is 3.08 and E is 3.54.

Was underneath my car today and most of my systems are gummed up.  the ouly reason i was down there is that my for wheel drive aint working. cant seem to get vaccum from the spot where the front line hooks to the pipes that go under neath the car to the front switch.  betting there is a whole bunch of grease in those lines. Came out with a grease covered hand.  i believe i saw the sticker just startng to peel. not sure but looks like it.  The sticker on the solo vac on the carb was still there covered in the junk. its peeled of the front but the rest is still there.

I definitly get that 4wd working because they say it is going to be a wet winter.  From the looks of it they are telling the truth.  Had about a 1ft 1/2 of snow fall on wednesday night till about thursday after noon.  theres still a foot of snow out there but i dont care.

:'( i miss having a basement. i dont miss tornadoes. Your car is purty :). Looking at it made me think back to 1989 when I owned an 89 Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo (red/charcoal) that had the little spoiler thing on the liftgate.. but also had panels that covered all the space between the car and the ground. If i had taken those off, and lifted the car.. it woulda been pretty close lookin to an SX/4. (Altho' i dont think it will ever live up to an eagle)

Not sure how well the Concord would do in the winter.  Would be curious though.

Not great.  No weight in the back.  But better than some other RWD cars of the era.

I remember mine(an 83,2 dr),its all in the tires especially if you live in hilly terrain,a little weight in the back doesn't hurt either.I think the low gears also helped.

Yes, black is still at the top of the list.  Want to take care of the underbody first.

Thanks.  Right now she is kind of sad looking.  But that will change once I am able to start working on her again.

  Doug,
I know you are getting itchy on to get to work on your car, just ease back into it.

Yuppers.  Little things first.  Like standing up things.  Bending way down is still a pain, literally.

We will get her back in shape for the meet, Doug.  It'll happen.  Right now get healthy first.

If you are looking at those kinds of numbers with your SX4, Id be over 30 is possible with some moderate modification and a light foot on the accelerator.

I made a serious mistake buying my Jeep Patriot. I should have spent 18 grand on a really perfect SX4! All I really wanted was an American made AWD vehicle with 30 MPG.

Is yours Manual or automatic?

Automatic with 2.35 gearing.

Patriot which I am happy with is currently getting 25.3 combined driving, according to the EVIC, and that is with the Off Road package.

Hey Doug, just curious, what picture of your SX/4 do you like the best?

The one's I have not taken yet.  Probably the one's when I finished the last repaint after fixing it up from the deer hits.  Although, I am still not happy with it.
