American parts has about everything except the window channel weatherstrips. Thanks for the reply, this is turning into  quite the hunt. Anybody else have a hard time finding them for the SX4 2dr?

79.95 each side. Maybe somewhat high but you got to have them. I asked if he had anymore and at first he said no but then after some thought he said he may have another set. Ask for Bruce.

Is my 85 wagon door the same size as the 81 sx4?  Or is the sx4 door longer?

2 doors are longer --- and top of door frame was tweaked by AMC on the SX/4's to accomodate the roof slope.  Although all 2 doors MAY use the same weather stripping but do not share with 4 doors.

I know this is an old topic, but I need new window channel weatherstripping for my driver's door. I searched around and found some at AMCRambler that looks like it will work for $30.

http://amcrambler.com/page4.html (http://amcrambler.com/page4.html)

So, will the 4 door channel for Hornet, Concord, & Eagle work for my Wagon?

Also, how hard is this to change? It looks like you have to take the door apart and slide the glass out of the way. And is there anything thing extra you have to do to remove the power window regulator, or do you have to remove it at all? (The service manual say it's necessary though).

SXBOB, was yours molded to fit and have the retainer clip thingy?, the ones at AMCRambler don't appear to be molded to fit. But I might just get the generic strip if the other is $80 though...

Four door version will work just fine.

Cool, now I just need to figure out how to order from him, since he doesn't have an online shopping set-up.

I'm an expert because I did it once. ;)
I didn't remove anything except the door panel (and all the stuff you have to take off to remove it).
I suppose I didn't know any better.
It wasn't easy, but I managed to get it in somehow.  It took lots of pushing and pulling
and leaving some skin inside those tight places, but it finally went in.
I'm glad you posted the source for the channel.  I need some, too.
That seems to be a reasonable price.  I paid more for mine on ebay.

Thanks for the info Jim. It sounds like an afternoon project. I saw it said in the service manual to soak the bottom ends of the stripping in soapy water, so that it slides easier. I might even spray some soapy water on the old too, it may make the job a little easier. I've had the door panel off several times, so that shouldn't be the hard part, but the stripping sounds like it fights back.  ;D I'm gonna change it as soon as I can get it, because the window is rattling a little when going over big bumps now. It was crumbly to begin with, but it tore and separated at the rear corner this morning when putting the window down. I think the window froze to the channel and stuck when I put the window down and just tore. I'm glad I could find new though instead of fussing with an old one in the snow at the junk yard, and for a reasonable price too.  :)

Well, I got my window channel in the mail today, and installed it this afternoon/evening. The old came out pretty easily, it kept crumbling, but eventually slid out. I found that the soapy water really helps. I used over a pint of water in a spray bottle getting the old out and putting the new in. The new channel was really nice quality and fit well in the door, but I think I might have been sent a 2-door channel rubber instead, because it was 3+inches too long, and the cuts for the bends didn't line up for two of the bends. I didn't feel like shipping it back for an exchange since it still fit, and I already had the old one out and didn't have time to wait for another to ship. I got the new to slip in pretty easy with lots of soapy water. I started by slipping the back part in a little lower where the window sits when up, then I rolled the window up so there was some hanging out at the bottom and then just pulled in down through the rest of the way. I did a similar method on the front and tucked the top in. It took about two and a half hours to do, then I washed it while it was in the garage. It was a pretty manageable job, but a little tough working in the tight spaces. Now I'm all ready for the next round of snow we're supposed to get on Sunday here in WV.  :)

Will those work on 84 AMC Eagle four door sedans. My front drivers side window channel is missing a piece. How hard is it to take out and replace the window channel.

How hard depends on the size of your hands. Mine are not very big and I still leave part of them inside those door panels any time I work in there.  Maybe I'm clumsier than other people.  Otherwise it's just a matter of doing it - it's not rocket science.

Thanks. Just to make sure I am thinking the right thing. The window channel is the stripping that sits inside the door frame around the window when it is ruled up so wind and rain will not get in right. I have never done this before so it might sound like a stupid question but why does the door panel need to be taken off. Is it hard to get off. Just wondering because I currently do not have a shop or any place inside to work on it so it would have to be a quick job. If some one used water would it not get inside the door and get any of the electrical wires wet. Thanks for your time.

Door panel is easy.  Some screws on the bottom, remove the window crank, door handle cup, lock knob, clips hold the sides of the panel into the door,  start from the bottom and work them out going from side to side.  If you have power windows you may have to remove the switch cover too.  Lift the panel up out of the window slot and then it will be free.  If you have a remote mirror there is a set screw on the back side you can loosen to allow the toggle lever to come out of the housing in the panel.

I ordered the window channels for the 2 door from him.  They are somewhat different than the factory originals.  The main problem area is the top rear part of the window frame that makes a right angle.  The factory original weatherstripping also was formed in a right angle here, but his weatherstripping is straight with relief cuts at that position.  I found that when bending the weatherstripping to make that right angle it puckers inwards and the window hits the puckers and the weatherstripping gets squished rather than sliding on either side of the window.  I folded some thin cardboard to the thickness of the window and with a screwdriver carefully pushed it into the right angle at the top rear of the window frame using the screwdriver to pull the puckers out so the cardboard could slide inside the weatherstripping.  I left the car like this for a month.  This allowed the passenger side weatherstrip pucker to take the shape of the window thickness cardboard and the window afterwards rolled into that corner nicely.  This did not work on the driver's side window which had a worse pucker for some reason.  I removed the cardboard from the driver's side window and when rolling up the window it still hit the pucker and squished the weatherstripping out of place.  I eventually had to cut the weatherstripping at that corner makeing a 45 degree cut on each side and slide it together.  This made a join with gaps in it and I ended up filling the joint with silicon to make an airtight seal.

The window channel weatherstripping is also shorter than the factory originals and on each side of the channels in the door the weather stripping ends 4 or 5 inches from the bottom of the channel.  The window is still supported by the weatherstripping in most of the channel and this did not appear to be a problem (as of yet) in my doors.

I did contact him.  He said :

"First Ive heard of the puckering corners. The replacements have a relief
hole and cut out.
I tried one and I see what you mean.
It seems the holes were punched in  a little too much.
If it becomes a problem, carefully remove the corner and use a hole puncer
and remove just a little more. Remember to open the flap first.
I have some pieces you could use for filler to extend the lower channels.
It should be ok without but if you want i can send some.".

I don't know if I would say I'm dissatisfied, a little disappointed yes, but I did manage to get it to work satisfactorily.

It kinda goes with the territory on those sorts of things, I have yet to see an aftermarket trim seal that fits and funtions as well as an original unit. It would just plain cost way too much to make something like that. That's not just amc either, the ones I had ordered for my chev were horiffic in every way  >:( (as in unusable). For a driver car though, the ones I got for the eagle worked great, after a couple minor alterations  ;) , no complaints....

I agree Shaggimo,  I'm happy to have something that's new even if it isn't quite right.  When I ordered the weatherstripping I was thinking there was a good chance it wouldn't be identical to the originals so I wasn't really surprised.  I will say that the door weatherstripping and window sweeps appear as original and fit very well.

This might sound like a strange question but what is the window sweep. I noticed that the stripping along the bottom of the window where it comes out of the door is also a bit short and does not meet up against the window channel. Does that come along with the window channel kit from amcrambler or is that separate. Also what is his email, tried the one listed but it says my emails could not make it through.
