Title: strut Rod replacement
Post by: Whuntmore on January 05, 2014, 02:57:31 PM
but I can't get the collar off the strut rod - or the large washer off.  It's bent.

It's pretty much rusted on, and the threads are pitted.  I need to know if you can get new strut rods.

I've checked Rock Auto, and other places, but I can't find anything yet.  Any other vehicle that uses the same ones?

If you have the ability, you can make new ones or maybe see if the ones on Ebay will work on Eagles. Search strut rod eliminator. http://amccars.net/cgi/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1223220958/0

I'll have to either find some good used ones, or get some made up.  I can't afford $$$ for those ebay performance replacements.

IIRC the 64.5-66 Mustangs use the same strut rod. There are LOTS of aftermarket options out there for the Mustangs.

It would be good to know if Mustangs, or any other Ford products used the same strut rod.  Thumbs up.

He makes these to order, so I want to get a set made to Eagle length. I think the Eagle ones are about a half inch longer than a Spirit version.

Good to know.  I'll check into that.

This thread motivated me to go ahead and buy new bushing for my SX-4.  I have replaced so many parts I had forgot about Strut rod bushings and also Swaybar bushing and link bushings so I jumped on Rock auto and ordered the MOOG Parts.  Another project when I get home. The wife is going to wonder who I have missed more, her, or the "little beast".  Just so you all know, "her" is the wife :o

I didn't check the angle, but the length is about the same as 2wd ones.

I soaked the bushing end of one of my Strut rods in Metal Ready (a POR-15 product) for about 30 hours, and it came out better then expected.  I may still re-use it.  Since I can't post pics to my photobucket account anymore (keeps saying "unrecognizable format" - Since when is a 'JPEG' unrecognizable??) I just post videos to my You Tube account now.

I'll post the results as soon as I can.

My friend had a virus in her Mac about a month ago that kept her from uploading FB pics with the same error message. Try emailing them to yourself and see if anything else comes attached.

Ok, I'll check into that, thanks!

I looked into the strut rod for a Mustang, and they are similar, but ours is shorter (21 1/4" - as apposed to 22 1/4") and the threads are shorter on the mustang, and instead of a taper at the end of the threads, it has a ring as a stopper.   I don't know if they would work, but that's a good memory to remember something that close.

Thanks for checking that. The funny thing about the Mustangs is that the strut rods point the other way, towards the front of the car.

I realize this is an old topic, but just to comment, I used '65 Mustang strut rod bushings on a '69 AMX just about a week ago. I did have to grind the length of the inner sleeves down about 1/8 inch to ensure they were being compressed, though.

The following photos exhibit the comparison between a stock Eagle strut rod and a Specialty Products adjustable strut rod for a 1965 Mustang. The Eagle strut rod is on the left in those photos.

The bottom line is that they are incompatible. This product will not replace an Eagle strut rod. HOWEVER, I am beginning to believe that Mustang strut rod bushings are compatible with the Eagle. I must do more testing in order to confirm.

It is my hope that you find this useful.  Let me know if you have any questions.

I need to look into these. If they are the same length we could be good to go.
