Each time I take an AMC for a 'FILL ER UP'
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:26:53 AM »
Each time I take any of my AMC's these days, it is not your typical, loosen the gas cap, swipe your card, choose your grade of gasoline, and fill up. No, Now days, it becomes a 1/2 hour stop. I have all kinds of people stopping by me, looking, coming out of the filling station mechanic shop wanting to know information and what gets me they will say, "My neighbor had one like this, but it wasn't a convertible, it was a 4 door and blue and it didn't have the back end look of this one." So, if you are in a hurry these days to do errands or joy ride or just to pick up some brats to go to a friends house, you will be delayed for sure! Before you know it, you are sharing stories and stories of my mother loved her Rambler. My mother loved her Eagle...she felt so safe in it. SO after it all ends,  :censored: Did I forget to put on the gas cap? Did I pay? How much was that total again? You all flustered for peeps noticing and reminescing. What time is it now? I AM LATE!!!  :censored: I HAVE TO TO THE GROCERY STORE NOW!!!! :censored:  It's 7:30 and I was supposed to be there by 7:15pm. I'm late, let's get going!!!

My other half would wonder why it took me an extra 1/2 hour to get home sometimes, same thing -being questioned at the pump about the car ;D.I'd love it when I'd pull up to a full service pump and let them look around for the filler door

Really? You have a choice between self service or full service at the pump. They fill for you, check oil, wash windshield.

Out here in the suburbs of Chicago, every gas station is self serve, and most want you to prepay. There might be one older station that is still offers full service for a higher price, but I'm not even sure if that one still has it.  However, I believe by law, if you have a handicap license plate, then the attendant has to pump gas for you if requested.

Oh, and I've had a few people start to talk to me about my Concord at the gas station too. Once, one guy jokingly asked me if I stole if from my grandma.

haha I think he's just joking, mate.
Yes I was.  The last time I saw full serve here in CA was in the 80's.    Of course we all got a taste of what "full serve" used to be about in the movie Back To The Future.

I wish they were more common. It's nice to save a few cents, but there are older people who don't want to be bothered with it anymore, and sometimes you're going somewhere nice and don't want to get gas or diesel on your hands.

The one I stop at sometimes is a Mom an Pop kind of country store, the self serve here is mostly pump first then pay until night fall, but thats always changing too.Sometimes I'll go in 1st and ask for $XXX amount of dollars worth and be told to pump first so I have to go back and pump my gas Then go back in and pay ,guessing some can't be preset to a certain $ amount.Other times I'll use the debit card.
Everyone would always comment on the car though whether it was the Jav ,the Eagle or the Concord, not so many comments with the Spirit for some reason, they were still new then .

I havn't seen full serves in years.
We had one station in southeast Arkansas where the owner would come out and pump gas for certain customers, like my Mother.  She was in her 80s then.  He retired and the station closed.  The lot where the station was is now cleared with a for sale sign on it.  That wasn't full service - it was pumping gas.   I have not seen a station where you got that much in years.
I'm right 98% of the time, and I don't care about the other 3%.

So I totally found a full serve station today!
I had my car out, and the guy spent like 3 minutes walking from drivers side to passenger side looking for my gas cap, before he asked me where it was.. and I thought of this thread and started laughing.

He also ignored my warning to not hold the handle all the way down, and got sprayed with gas.. haha.

There's always this place

I grew up just down the street from it, so as a kid I thought everyone had one. Turns out there are two left.

They're full service, have a great local reputation for exhaust work, and the owner is a Jeep nut. There's usually a J truck or a Comanche there. They've never had a problem finding my gas cap.

Speaking of fill up stories....The other day I was putting gas in the SX/4, when a gent walked up and asked "is that a gremlin?"  :rotfl: I said no it's an Eagle. He replies, "wow!, I've never seen one like that before, I have an Eagle station wagon as my camp vehicle".....Just goes to show you, even eagle owners don't always know what they are looking at, lol. We had a good conversation as I filled the Eagle with gas, hahaha.

NJ is all full serve. The only issue I have with self serve is when Parents have thier obviously too young kids pumping gas, because they think it is a grown up thing to do and fun. Here in NY when I was younger and working a full serve station, a law was passed to remove those catches that let you fill it up while you did windshields. All because a kid got splashed with gas because it wasn't set right. It's not a "playstation" for fun, gasoline is a serious thing. i have sen a few people drive off with the stupid hose still in thier tank, ripping it from the pump.

Yeah, in New Jersey, it's against the law to pump your own gas. It can be fun at times though. One time me and my dad had to fill up our 1957 Chevrolet and in that car the gas cap is inside the left rear tail fin behind a piece of trim. We pulled in, and the attendant looked at the car, looked at us, and gave us the pump nozzle. I love moments like that ;D I can't wait to see the reactions I get when I get an Eagle.

Jersey and Oregon are the only 2 I know about, BUT, I am a fuel attendant, And IF I feel the cost of the paint or the owner is firm about wanting to put their own fuel in, I will hand them the nozzle, As well if they are on a motorcycle. I generally don't have an issue if they want to fuel their own rig, I am just their for safety and security so that it is still paid. Not quiet full service BUT the place I work only has 1 attendant so I can't always get every window, but I generally get them if they fill up, or spend more than $20 and are the the only ones there. As many people are in a rush these days.

Anyone passing through Eastern Oregon, "Most" of the guys that are over 30 doing the job of fuel attendant "Generally" don't give you too much guff if you want to pump your own so long as you ask and let them know first, I do however suggest letting them set the pump, IE enter the information even if it is a fill up and hand you the nozzle. keep in mind that some places are PREPAY, most aren't. my experience that If you are willing to ask, most of the attendants have no issue with you handling the nozzle once they remove it from the cradle. Especially with insurance concerns as well as the fact that They don't want to lose a customer. Most owners will even back up the customer, as the liability for repainting the car would fall on the Company then the attendant depending on how far most people want to push it.

There is a few exceptions to the rule of "Mandatory fuel attendant and that is Tribal reservations. As they are souvenir nations they "Don't" have to follow that rule and "Generally" are able to fuel your own vehicle. They are few and far between. But they are out there. Arrowhead Travel plaza at the base of Cabbage Hill Between Pendleton and La Grande is one of them.

On a side note, Oddest place I have ever seen a "STOCK" fuel neck is behind the tail light of a 1950's Chevy. The drivers side tail light pulled out  on telescoping arms and hinged about 45 degrees and the neck was behind it. I thought it was the coolest place ever. I know my cars, but that one threw me for a loop. I am sure the owner was happy with the idea as he never would need a locking gas cap.

Ummm, that should be sovereign (as in independent) nations!
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!
