Engine backfires hesitation rough
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:11:15 AM »
Hello,
My car starts up fine and runs smooth but after about ten to twenty minutes I get hesitation, backfires, stalling (when I'm driving especially when I press the accelerator peddle). It gets so bad that when I'm in traffic it will stall and its murder to get started again. Very very rough running. If I leave the car for about 15-20 minutes it will start up and run but gets worse after time.
Seems like when the engine gets warmed up the problem starts. My temp gauge reads fine.
Any ideas? Distributor? Bad wires to the distrib cap? Clogged catalytic converter?

Thanks,

Engine Control Module?  Misbehaves when hot, cools off and works.  I have heard that a coil may do the same thing but I haven't personally experienced it.
I'm right 98% of the time, and I don't care about the other 3%.

I mispoke - I meant to say Ignition Control Module.  My apologies.

Jim:

Thanks, after searching ICM, it sounds like the problem! I'll have it replaced and the pick up coil checked.
