Title: My First Car: A 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited
Post by: EagleJoe93 on March 20, 2012, 10:37:52 PM
Well everyone, after searching and searching, I finally found my Eagle.  :) It needs some work like every other Eagle I've seen but the price was right and worth it considering how clean it is. This is the cleanest one I've ever seen in person. Here is what needs to be done.

It ran real lousy and would stall at low idles due to carburetor issues so we got a new MC 2100 Carburetor from Gronk.

It was missing the catalytic converter and some pipe so to get it to where I live we put on some flex pipe. We got a new converter and stainless steel pipe.

The headliner is sagging. I've got spray-on adhesive for that.

The headlight bulbs needed replacing. Only one would come on when low beams were on. All would come on when high beams were on. Got new bulbs.

It may need brake work. Found this out driving it home.  :o Luckily, me and the Eagle made it home safely.

Needs rear tires; will need front tires soon. A friend of mine has a friend that may be able to get me some tires that fit within my student budget.

Needs an inspection, hence the 2004 inspection sticker.

Aside from other not so important things like a trailer hitch, roof rack, alloy wheels, and installing my uncles old CB and Pioneer cassette radio, that's all it needs to get back on the road.

I have all the parts sitting in the car ready to be installed, I'm just waiting for a day I'm free of school or work. I look forward to getting her back on the road and taking her to our local car show (where I don't recall ever seeing something AMC made) and using this site to help me do just that.  :)

Here are some pictures.

Nice wagon! Thanks for sharing the pictures. I'd like to find a nice wagon like that some day so I can take my family around in comfort. The SX/4 is a little cramped for the kids!

The same time this was for sale there was a 1983 Sx4 with the 258 and 4-speed manual for $600 that I also wanted to go see. Unfortunately that was sold before I could see it. Still happy with my wagon.  :)

I meant to add a shot of the instrument cluster. I found one with 87k miles and one with a tachometer instead of a clock! Also, notice something else that hasn't 'broken off'.  ;)

Thank you. Yes, that would be where my obsession with old cars started, my dad's 1957 Chevrolet 210 sedan. Now me and my dad have our own classics to take to our local show, though I've never seen an AMC there. Well, looks like I'll be representing.  :amc:  :)

nice dude. this may get me hanged here for saying this but since i was about seven years old my dream car has always been a 57 chevy 2 door sedan on steroids.

Currently every part on a 57 chevy is reproduced, from the nuts and bolts to whole bodies. Wouldn't that be nice for eagles.  ;D Our chevy isn't going anywhere. It's been in the family since new and we intend to keep it that way. Also, not meaning to turn this into a wanted ad but does anyone have a cargo liner that matches this interior color?

Great score EagleJoe!

Tach! Center Gauge Cluster! Nice Leather! Low Miles! Unbroken Hood Release!

Looks good man. I see you are missing the bottom rubber/chrome trim pieces on both your rear doors. Are they in the car somewhere or are you gonna be in need of those?

Also, you never mentioned what year it was. I'm guessing post '85 since it has the power bulge hood. I've never seen a radio like that in an Eagle either.

How much did you pay for this beauty?
Title: Re: My First Car: A 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited

Those pieces are in the car along with the rest of the parts to be installed. Just need to glue them on. It's a 1986. It says so in the post title. I guess I should make it a little bit more clearer next time. I paid $1300 and that was what we offered. I think the radio is one of those ones with a digital tuner. It sounded really nice to my surprise for 26 year old audio equipment. Speakers seemed to rattle a bit and when I tested the cassette player, it seemed to play low at first then it picked up. Heads may need to be cleaned.

First of all, I'm a dummy! Duh it's in the title. I was just in a pinch looking to see what year it was in the original thread, but it's not mentioned in the text there...just the title...but I overlooked it. Whoops!

As for the tape deck...yeah, mine needs help too!

It's not quite like that. It plays at normal speeds but it played at a very soft level and then after a while it plays like it should. I'm pretty sure all it needs is a cleaning, or I could replace it with my uncles old dual knob Pioneer cassette deck or a newer Sears brand cassette deck with an auxiliary jack. Does anyone know what size the speakers are? Also, in the photo that shows the radio; was there supposed to be something next to it. There is some adhesive there and I have no clue what was there.

Funny, it doesn't seem to have a defroster and there is definitely no rear wiper.  ???

I did find this one piece of plastic that fits in that area, but it has a slit in it around the area where the three holes are which lead me to think something was there at one time or another.

Just an update on how things are going with my Eagle. I took the headers and the pipe connected to that off so I could clean the engine off well and replace the gasket. We managed to find an aluminum valve cover for a fair price and ordered it. We charged the battery and this battery doesn't fit in the holder and was just sitting on the edge so we cut a piece of wood to put in the battery holder to make it stable. Still lots more to do.

Also, does anyone have suggestions for a name?

If you had just the defroster it went in the center hole. If you had wipers and defroster it used the two outer holes. A plastic cover went over it. I forget what the 80 did with the pushbutton and light. The toggle defroster has a protrusion that locks into the top notch to prevent it from twisting.

The DIN radio is nice.

Ok, I did a search.

This is an early style:

The control for the wipers is under the headlight knob on the left side of the dash. There is a defroster for the front windshield built into the climate controls. There is no wiper for the rear window and I don't think there is a defroster there. Maybe there was some sort of delete plate there?
Title: Re: My First Car: A 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited

That's odd for a Limited, I thought they all got rear wipers and rear defrosters, and it would be strange not to at least have the rear defroster. Perhaps it's a different glass or back hatch and an owner removed the switches?

I'm sure there is a delete plate for it, though. Base and fleet vehicles could be bought without both features.

All Limited meant was it got leather seats. My Limited came with almost no other options. I did get a rear defroster though...but for some reason it isn't working.

There is a piece of plastic that goes over it, but it's bent, has a slit in it, and looks sort of nasty. Not worrying about that now, have to get the car put back together and running first.  :P I'm not sure if it has a rear defroster or not. I see nothing that would lead me to believe that it does. Definitely does not have a rear wiper.

Well, you learn something new all the time. I had to troubleshoot mine as well; I had a bad ground.

It was just the standard grid type, so it should be obvious. They make kits for the glass but I bet you could find someone who has a hatch you could transplant the glass from if you wanted one. I don't know how people lived without them.

Yes it does. I was very surprised to find a wagon with one. They seem to be a rare feature. Do they have a bad reputation or something?

BenM, a Key West sticker is all that's on the rear window, nothing else. I'm not going to worry too much about having a defroster for now. There are other things that need to be done. The hatch is missing the  :amc: AMC badge. Is there anyone on here that has one or knows where to get one?

Things are starting to pick up pace. Finished installing all of the headlights and replacing my drivers side headlight bucket; the original one was falling apart. Also bought two center caps for my spoke hubcaps since two are missing and a black leather key chain with the  :amc: logo with Eagle under it. Hope to have her back on the road in a week or two or whenever our kitchen renovation is almost done.

Have also been chasing away wasps eager to build nests on my drivers door, driver and passenger fender, and passenger side taillight.  >:(

Great news! My Eagle is very close to being back on the road!   :blob1:  I got both the intake and exhaust manifolds installed and started to instal the new Carter Carburetor from Gronk. Now all that needs to be done is finish up the carb and instal the new catalytic converter to the pipe that connects that to the manifold. Then do a little brake work and then it is roadworthy once again! Can not wait to start driving it.  8)

Just got a NOS 1986 AMC Eagle brochure in the mail today from the bay. It has a lot of neat information that will be great for my AMC info binder I plan on making. Also learned what features on my car were standard or optional and that my eagle can tow up to 3500 pounds. Hope to at least get the engine in my car running tomorrow. On a side note; my insurance costs will be nowhere near as expensive as I originally anticipated.  :)

I've ordered a honey colored cargo cover for my eagle and it looks brand new! That will be on it's way sometime soon. I also am trying to get a Class 3 trailer hitch for my eagle as well. Haven't been able to work on my car recently just because New Jersey is getting hit with a pretty good heat wave (high 90's on one day).  :o

Update: Things have been going a bit slow for getting my eagle back on the road. Another project I have has taken top priority on my to do list. I will have it running properly by the time the fall term starts in late August-early September. It's been sitting for too long now in my books. I also am starting my stockpile of parts with a stop and shift 4WD switch, a brake pedal pad, a throttle cable with mounting bracket, and four used but nice AMC emblems.  :) Here are photos of my spare parts. The 4WD switch is in the for sale section since I have the shift on the fly switch.

Best of luck getting it up and running before the semester starts.  I hope you won't need it to get from and to school.  I remember those days of relying on an older vehicle as a DD for college.

...Class 3 trailer hitch for my eagle as well....

Since the Eagle does not use frame-on construction, I wouldn't think a class III hitch would be a good idea.  Those that have used their Eagle for pulling a trailer can speak from experience where I cannot.  But since it uses a subframe unibody design, I wouldn't expect it to be safe for anything past a class I hitch, possible a class II.

I'm only raising a red flag out of concern for your safety.  I'm sure someone on here can quote exactly what the Eagle is rated at towing wise.

Well I actually will be using it as a daily driver.  ::) I hope someday to register it as a historic vehicle but that day may be a while. According to the brochure I have; Eagles are rated for class 1 and 2 for up to 3500 pounds. I just would like a trailer hitch of some sort because my eagle is a lot better than out two minivans for pulling our small trailer.

Great news!!! After sitting for about seven or eight months, my Eagle was started for the first time since I bought it!  :blob1: It started on the first try and wasn't stalling out ten seconds after it was started!  :) Boy was it good to hear it running finally. It still is not roadworthy though, I most likely will need a new master cylinder from what it seems like. You may see me post a wanted ad for some things I need or would like sometime soon. I also recently received some door bushings so sometime soon I will fix my sagging drivers door. All in all it was a big step in getting my Eagle ready for the road.

I'd be happy with just a picture of it, Ben. I'm betting Uhaul made their hitch to mount on the side of the subframe instead of below it and then tied into those two big bumper bolts and the hole behind them. In other words I bet the mounting bolts sit horizontally instead of vertical like an XJ hitch.

I used an XJ one. The XJ one worked perfect except for the drilling of the bolt holes. The width of the Eagle subframe is exactly the same as an XJ. In an Eagle you have the rear bumper support that sticks into the back of the car with a huge bolt holding it on, however. Even though the horizontal metal with the holes line up perfectly it's difficult to drill the holes themselves. I just drilled through it and put through bolts through the entire subframe, with the Hexhead hidden under the rug. It's hard to drill through a pipe inside a square bore. The next one I do I'll remove the rear bumper first, drill the holes, then mark the tube through the holes and remove it again to be drilled on a drill press. Those extra steps would have kept me from breaking two drill bits in the process.

Today was a good day. Finished getting the exhaust system in with a brand new catalytic converter and connecting pipe. Started it up again and it ran for a solid ten minutes without stalling! There is still a vacuum leak somewhere and for some reason the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster wasn't working. Any thoughts?  ??? Next step is to bleed the brakes. Chances are a new master cylinder is needed. After that put the new door bushing in and I'm good to go!  :)

First thing to check about the temp gauge is to make sure the sensor is in place.  It's near the firewall next to the valve cover behind the carb.  I used to knock mine off periodically when reaching down into that morass of wires and hoses and .....stuff.
It's just an electrical connector that perches on top of the sensor, sometimes not as snugly as we would like.

Also went to my first swap meet last Saturday and actually found an owners manual for my year eagle!  Also started my collection of car emblems. I'm glad that it's looking like my eagle could be fully road worthy this weekend. I just wish I didn't get screwed on a grill, cargo cover, and a set of sport rims for my car.  :banghead:

After sitting in my driveway since January 27th, I drove my eagle for the first time since then. There are still some kinks to be worked out, but it was a great feeling to be able to finally drive this awesome car!

Started to replace my leaky plastic rocker arm cover with a metal one I bought a while ago, but the house has seemed to become a bigger project than my eagle for my dad and with missing a whole week of school due to the storm and with no extensions to the end of the year, I myself have been really bogged down with homework, so I don't know when my eagle will finally be finished. Someday....

Just added to my spare parts stockpile with a lot of miscellaneous parts off a 1979 AMC Spirit AMX! The holy grail of the lot has to be a hood release cabe with an intact knob! Also included a good used Spirit rear hatch weather seal which I have no need for and will be offering here since I don't have a Spirit. (yet ;) ) On top of this I also got a set of front fender flares with trim, a bunch of Eagle/Concord emblems, and a drivers side lower door hinge from members on here. Will post pictures when finals are over with.

In other news while attempting to install the aluminum rocker arm cover we damaged the gasket and will have to get a new one.  :banghead:

Just an update. Finished installing new brakes all around last weekend. That was the last major repair job on the car. Now all that needs to be done to get it back on the road is to do some carb tuning and working out some more emission lines. There is still more to do (sagging headliner, aligning headlights, fix a dent, body touch up, etc) but it will at least be drivable. Me and my dad will try to finish it up this weekend. It is actually approaching a whole year that I've had this eagle. I'll be happy to hopefully have the eagle drivable before that date and in time for the spring semester.

Speaking of college, I got straight A's last semester.  ;)

Actually, I already have one that pays for tuition.  :) And if I graduate with a 3.5 or higher; I can get the same thing for a four year school. The money we are saving will help with paying NJ teen boy insurance prices......

So today I had my first Pick n Pull experience. I found out that one of my local yards actually would allow you to pull your own parts. So me and Dad went over there today and this is what we got.

4.0 Head with rocker arm cover, exhaust and intake manifolds, push rods, and hardware from a 1992 Jeep 4.0

Overhead console from a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.

I also plan on getting a new oil pan and cargo cover from a member on here.

Question about the console. Does anyone know what I need to get the temperature and compass display working? I couldn't figure out if the sensor or whatever it is was in the console or was somewhere else in the Jeep.

I'll try to get pictures of my finds sometime or another. Have not been able to do much of anything with my Eagle from either being sick, too busy, or bad weather.

Greymarooneightytwo figured out how to get the temp and compass working.  He gives details in his March 1 post on Page 72 of this thread:

I did. I got everything I need for a 4.0 head swap from a 1992 block. So it looks like there was a sensor I was supposed to grab from the Jeep?
Title: Re: My First Car: A 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited
Post by: greymarooneightytwo on March 11, 2013, 01:51:46 PM
Yeah, there should have been a temp sensor on the front pillar near the radiator somewhere, likely... I ended up scavenging a usable part but it's not ideal; it's a few degrees off.

I really need to do a writeup on the process with some pictures to go along with, I'll try to tackle that in the next few days... but suffice it to say I removed the lights from the computer, bypassed the crazy "logic circuit" that was apparently controlling them, disabled the click switches and added one that controlled them all for simplicity, and then wired in the dash knob and door ajar as well.

Good luck, I'm happy with it!

Thanks. Maybe I'll go back to the Jeep and get it. A write up would be a great addition to the nest for people like me that want to do this. All I want is the compass and temperature displayed. I don't need all that other stuff.
Title: Re: My First Car: A 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited
Post by: greymarooneightytwo on March 11, 2013, 03:31:27 PM
That's good, because I don't know a way to get that other stuff working (it's actually got a lot of features) without obdII and the Grand Cherokee ECU/ECM... if someone happened to be doing a 4.0 swap I bet they could do it.

Otherwise, the compass is built-in to the computer so you just need a switched 12v line and a sensor for the temp

Luckily, the temp and compass happen to display at the same time :)

(Chrysler made a similar overhead console for their vans, pictured above because the display is similar)

That looks a lot like the one in our Grand Caravan. So the sensor is located near the radiator? What does it look like? Should I pull any wires from the Jeep as well?
Title: Re: My First Car: A 1986 AMC Eagle Wagon Limited
Post by: greymarooneightytwo on March 11, 2013, 05:41:20 PM
The wires are just wires, so pulling just the sensor is easiest... I'm not absolutely positive, and it could vary by year and model, but the sensor may be located on a pillar in front of the radiator..

So I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that the Eagle is running better than it ever has been before even with a few things needing to be tweaked. The bad news is that the brakes are still not right. Maybe my Dad will chime in with the details but I am still thrilled with the progress that was made today.

What's wrong with the brakes?

When you slam on them the car doesn't quite jolt to a stop, it will jerk but still sort of slide. You will be jerked but it takes a little longer than it should to come to a complete stop. The car has new brakes and new brake lines all around and a new master cylinder and the brakes have been bleed twice. Perhaps it needs another bleeding or it needs to be driven a bit more or perhaps the brake booster is bad. I hope to work on it this weekend but with school/work/school play I don't know how much I can do.

Seems like a bad caliper,  brake hose,  or wheel cylinder.  Maybe rear shoes out of adjustment.  Even with a bad booster it should still stop evenly.  Would like to meet up and check out your car one day now that the weather is nice.  I'm right by 18 & 9.  I'll bring the show car and some free advice!

Thank you for very much for your assistance. I would like to see your sedan since I've never seen one in person. When it is good to go I plan on bringing it to the car show at the A&P on Rt 9 and Ferry Road. I never saw an Eagle there or any AMC for that matter. So having the only one there would be sweet. Having two there would be awesome.

(thank you demonicdragon) One side is painted black, which does look pretty good, but I am going to see how I feel about it before I make a decision on if I should leave it black or bring it back to it's original color.

Replaced the battery cables and upgraded the ignition and distributor today. Starts up great now. Also did another brake bleeding, but they are still not quite right. We suspect the front calipers need to be replaced because the fluid we drain from them is a lot dirtier than the fluid we drain from the rear. Also got a cargo cover for my car as well.

Got a whole mess of parts from an AMC Spirit on the electronic bay site, which had a pretty nice blue steering wheel that I will be listing here. Also adjusted the rear breaks all by myself. It may not seem like much but for someone who is still pretty new to working on a car by themselves I am proud of myself. Brakes are STILL not how they should be.  :banghead: Does anyone know how to test the brake booster on an eagle?

Sorry that I haven't posted in a while. Things have been coming along nicely. If all goes according to plan, then my Eagle will finally be road worthy after sitting in my driveway for about 1 year & 5 months. Have done lots of things to it. Me and my dad have installed an all new braking system (minus the booster) and plan on replacing the front rotors, which we feel is the cause of my cars braking problem. We also installed a new starter and distributor and new battery cables. We also have gotten the carburetor tuned to the point where it will idle under 1k RPM. I also have started hoarding whatever spare parts I can get my hands on and/or afford. I've taken a bunch of pictures that are below.

What my engine bay currently looks like.

Got the grill from a 1982 AMC Spirit GT installed. It looks great.

Finally found a cargo cover in my color. One side has been painted black but I'll repaint it the original honey tan color someday.
(http://i1242.photobucket.com/albums/gg524/Eaglejoe93/My%20Eagle/IMG_3472_zps8def27b3.jpg) (http://s1242.photobucket.com/user/Eaglejoe93/media/My%20Eagle/IMG_3472_zps8def27b3.jpg.html)
Got a rear speaker cover installed to replace my original broken one, which I think I'll be able to fix. Have been toying with the idea of putting in some 80's era aftermarket speakers (2 Sony brands and two NOS Jensen brands), but that is for another day.
(http://i1242.photobucket.com/albums/gg524/Eaglejoe93/My%20Eagle/IMG_34732_zps7d82cd34.jpg) (http://s1242.photobucket.com/user/Eaglejoe93/media/My%20Eagle/IMG_34732_zps7d82cd34.jpg.html)
Here is what spare AMC parts I have been able to acquire for my Eagle. I have no need for the 4WD switch, the rear hatch seal (from a 79 Spirit AMX), and the steering wheel, so if anyone needs them message me.

I also went to a local junkyard and pulled the 4.0 head, rocker arm cover, and exhaust manifold from a 92 Jeep engine block for a future 4.0 head swap. Also got the intake manifold to save the time of removing it there, which I don't need for the swap. Does anyone need it?

Also got the overhead console from a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited to install in my car. Also got the mounting bracket, the plug and temperature sensor so I can have the compass and the outside temperature from the Jeep as well.

How's it going Joe?  Looking forward to the car show at A&P again this year.  Hopefully this time I will be able to get there early and register.  Also hope you are happy with the way the repairs I did turned out.  I will be happy to repair your Carter carb for free.  This way if you decide to use it you can just install it without any worries of it running bad.  I'm all about the Carter great carburetors IMO.  Take care

Well, I finally made it here. I've been on the AMC EVO site since the nest went down and I was having trouble remembering my password for my old nest account. Since my last official post, the car has gotten to the point where I can drive it, legally and safely. It also has new tires, new shocks, and I got a full tan cargo cover. It also failed inspection with a 2741 HC count and we later found out that the reason was there were metal shavings in the MC from when the jets were installed and a little metal ball (the correct name escapes me) inside the MC wasn't even there, allowing who knows how much gas being pumped in. It has since passed with a 42 HC count after having TwoEaglesForMe go through it.

I still have the steering wheel and Spirit AMX hatch seal if anyone is interested. No longer have the horn button. I have also taken it on some good moderately long drives. One was to South NJ to meet my Scout Troop where they were camping and the other was to see Drew University (where I plan to transfer to if finances allow it) in Northern Jersey. Both times it ran great and 9 out of 10 times it will start on the first try after pushing the gas pedal down once. There are still things that need to be done, like the headliner, installing the overhead console, a good coat of wax, and really rubbing in some good leather conditioner, but I can drive it at least. The Englishtown Swap Meet at Raceway Park is this weekend so hopefully this time around I'll find something Eagle or AMC related that I can use.

Do you mean the NOS one, yes. I wasn't really planning on selling it. I plan on upgrading my hatch to one with a wiper and defroster and plan on putting the emblem on it when the time comes. I bought it on the bay (can I say the real name here or not?) from a seller that I think was a member on the nest and I think is on the EVO. Eddiestakes I think his username is. Every time I search "AMC Eagle" there is one listed for sale. Isn't there also a company that actually has reproductions of them?

Great! I also just found a different seller on ebay that has some NOS AMC emblems for sale. They are actually cheaper than what I paid for mine. There are 6 left so go for it!  :)

Can I post links as well?

Joe I am glad you gave me the chance to help you out.  Now I am gonna help you some more.  I found some wheels to go on my 86 parts car so you can have the aluminum Grand Cherokee wheels that are on there for FREE.  I will get them off in the next couple days.  The wheels are FREE but if you want the tires which are in pretty decent shape I will sell them for 100.  Size P-215-75-15 all terrains.  You would need new lug nuts 1/2 in. thread,  bulge acorn type.  Call me and let me know.  Greg  732 641 0478

Sorry I haven't gotten to reply yet. I have been very busy with school in recent weeks. I really don't need the tires since I already got some new tires for it. Either me or my dad will contact you by phone ASAP. Also, I saw that you got a 1980 AMC Spirit AMX. Congrats on the find! You mentioned that the interior is mint aside from the typical broken hood release cable knob. Well, guess who happens to have a hood release cable with an intact knob from a 1979 AMC Spirit AMX.  ;) Half of the mounting bracket is missing so there is only one mounting hole, but perhaps something could be made or the bracket from the other cable could be used. Anyway, since you've been a great help for us, you can have it free of charge.

We def have to get together again soon when our schedules allow for it.  How's the car been running?  I just got the AMX this past week and am looking forward to getting it road and show worthy.  Also there is an Eagle wagon with a rear hatch with defroster and wiper at that yard in Jamesburg.  Much better shape than mine but missing the wiper arm.  I don't think they want much for it.  Mine is rusted out along the bottom.  I'd say go for it as they moved the car to the end of the dead pile.

My hinge is worn out too, so the one pictured is the one I'll be putting on mine. All the stuff pictured was really just showing what I have accumulated in terms of parts. The stuff wasn't necessarily for sale.

Before I am to go away to school in the fall, there is a to do list of things that I'd like to get done or as many done as possible. For some of them I have questions on.

Redye and re-glue the headliner. Where could I get a dye in the honey tan color for the headliner? What is the color code? It is pretty faded so I'd like to redye it before I glue it back up.

Install an overhead console from a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Upgrade my hatch to one with a wiper and defroster. Got a hatch with that from a junkyard recently with that stuff. The hatch is a bit rough but the glass looks good and the wiper motor is there. Will need a rear wiper arm since the one on the hatch is broken off and the switches for the dash. My plan is to transplant those components into my hatch so I don't have to worry about repainting anything. Is the wiring for the defroster and wiper already in the car or will I need that? My car currently has no defroster and no wiper.

Upgrade my wheels to ones from a Jeep.

Do some paint touch-up here and there. What are the color codes for the white (I think it is olympic white) and the brownish color on the flares? Is the flare color available in a spray can by any chance?

Fix my manual mirrors. They barely move if at all. Do they just need oil or are they broken and if so, what parts of the dash will I need to remove to get to them? Are replacements available?

Upgrade my radio and speakers. How does the radio come out?

Get a whole mess of leather conditioner and really work it into my seats.

I think some of the body wiring is there, but the hatch wiring is not, and you may also need a connector to tap into the fuse panel. It's a standard GM piece, there are three styles of connector that fit battery, ignition, or accessory positions on the fuse panel. The way the defroster connected to power varied between years and models.

The combination switch-light-timer unit for the defroster is rare, and if you have a working one should be disassembled and lubed with silicone grease if you want it to last. You can use the early separate parts style push button and timed relay style, which was also used for Cherokees. A light and momentary switch or button go in the radio pod and the relay just lives in the dash.

They come apart, but it can be a pain. You need bent screwdrivers and patience. The remote mirrors probably  need the cables freed and lubricated as well.

I don't know what would replace them. I've looked around and I was looking at adapting electric mirrors from a Nissan Versa. AMC mirrors come with two different cuts on the stem to compensate for the curve of the door sheet metal. One cut worked on the Pacer/Hornet/Gremlin/Concord/Spirit/Eagle, the other on Javelin and the big cars. I don't know if FSJ mirrors have a similar cut to one of those or not. The small car cut brings the head closer to the glass, the big car cut is further out and varying gasket thicknesses made up small differences from car to car.
Quote
Upgrade my radio and speakers. How does the radio come out?

The shaft-mount radio comes out in a two-part manner. You pull the knobs and use a socket or needle-nose pliers to remove the nuts around the shafts. Then you remove the whole radio pod by removing the screws holding the ashtray brackets to the dash and the screws by the steering column, in the glovebox, and hidden at the top. There is a mount in the back of the radio, and sometimes it's got a rubber tip on it that rides in the hole and other times it's retained by a nut.

You then need to get an adapter for the stock harness and run some ground wires out to all four speakers. The old Motorola radios grounded through the body or used a common ground for all speakers but that will fry most newer radios. Trailer connector pins are the correct diameter for the speaker connectors, and the three-prong power connector is a plug type used for ages.

Check this motorcycle site to see the "OEM-Style Non-Latching Connector Shell Pairs" for the power connector. (http://vintageconnections.com/) The "trailer connector" pins are .156 (4mm) bullet connectors (standard bullet connectors are 3.5mm) and can be bought in the correct 4-pin square style. (And that's why crimp connectors are always loose in cars.)

All AMC's used the same 5-1/4'' speakers in the front doors. I think the back speakers were all originally 5-1/4'' as well, at least in sedans and 2-doors; sometimes the back speakers were originally 8Ω so be aware if you reuse them, but almost all were 4Ω. I forget what factory speaker connectors were, but I have a feeling they're related to the three-pin power connector.

I've rewired radios in every car I own, and believe me - you don't heavy wire. 18 gauge will get you there. (http://www.chuckhawks.com/speaker_wire.htm) I've become a fan of not removing good working factory connectors unless they're impossible to find, then I go with molex or weatherpack connectors because they're dirt-common and don't come apart but you need a good crimper and not the cheap auto store one.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info! My radio is the DIN style radio, not the shaft style, which should make it easy to install something without cutting up my bezel. I have an old school Sears brand AM/FM cassette radio with an AUX input for at the time portable CD players that I would like to use. I also have some vintage Sony speakers and some NOS Jensens that should fit, but I don't know for sure if they will work.

There's definitely adapters from the later Eagle/Jeep DIN plug to add an aftermarket radio. They're not expensive and worth it over cutting and identifying the wires. If you have that, you have all the wires needed in the car for the new radio and speakers.

So as an update yesterday my Dad and I worked on knocking some things off the to do list. We got the replacement hinge with new pin and bushings installed, and we figured while we were working on the door that we would pull the door panel off to see why my manual mirrors aren't working. When we got the mirror off we sprayed the cable with PB Blaster and oil and let it sit for a while. We haven't put it back on yet but the mirror seems to be moving a lot better now.

While we were working on that I figured now would be an ideal time to see if I could replace the speaker. Took it out to see that it is completely disintegrated. I have some vintage Sony speakers that will work but they won't clear the crank. So I am in the market for a good set of aftermarkets that I can install behind the original grills. I'll be installing the Sony's in the back since they work, will fit, and they have metal grills built in so I can preserve the original rear speaker grills.

So I managed to get one of the new aftermarket speakers I bought installed, an MTX Terminator, in the drivers door. Even with having that one speaker installed, one missing, and the other two the crummy originals, the sound quality sounds SO much better. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like with all four of them installed!

Here is a bit of an overdue update on my Eagle, which I'm pretty sure  I'll be naming Rosalind. I got the wheels and other things from a wagon TwoEaglesForMe was parting out and I got some touch up paint in the Olympic White color as well as a spray can of the Moca Brown color on the flares. I will be leaving for school at the end of august and I have a few things I'd really like to have done before hand. Those are putting the wheels on my car with my tires, fixing the sagging headliner (and install the Grand Cherokee overhead console while I have the board out), fully upgrade my audio system (anything special I should know for removing the DIN style radio?), give it a few really good coats of wax and rubbing as much Leatherique conditioner as I can into my seats. I haven't been able to do too much since I was in a show in July. The muffler sprouted a rust hole or two in the past few days and I've ordered the parts to replace it so it doesn't sound like a rice burner. If I can manage it I plan on writing up a how to relating to emblems which I hope will be found useful.

Here's a current update for my Eagle, which I have decided to name Rosalind.

One night I was driving home after helping out an an event at my church and when I was about half a mile away from home I heard a loud thud from under the car. My first thought was that one of my tires blew out. When I got out to see what happened, I saw a metal part in the road a few feet behind where I pulled over. I look at it and it is covered in fresh grease, so I know it came from me. I checked the rear axle to see if it came from there, but it looked fine. Came to the front and when I got to the drivers side wheel, I found the entire wheel well covered in grease and the CV joint somehow managed to loose 5 grade eight bolts and sheer the head off one. It was probably replaced by someone before me that didn't tighten the bolts very well. I called my dad and he was able to drive the car home at 15 miles an hour with the emergency flashers on with me following behind. In a way this was a blessing in disguise since we found that the passenger side CV joint formed a large rip in the boot and needed to be replaced as well and that this happened when I was close to home and before I am to go away to college this Friday. Rosalind now has some brand new (not re-manufactured) front CV Joints.  :)

I have also been prepping her for when I leave for school. The past few days I have been repainting the steel wheels in a gloss white so I don't have to bring the original wire spoke wheel covers with the risk of loosing one or someone walking off with them. The white on the wheels is a true white while the car is more of an off white, so they don't match as well as I would have liked, but I think they give her a 60's stock car look which I think is pretty cool along with the new chrome AMC lug nuts I bought recently on ebay. Either way, the painted steels are a temporary thing while I prepare the Jeep alloys I got for her the way I want them and done right. Also, does anyone know where I could get some center caps, wheel spinners, or whatever they are called that aren't too expensive?

Other things I hope to get done are the headliner, the Jeep overhead console if possible, align the headlights, vacuum the interior, and give her a nice wash and a good coat of wax.

Here is a current picture of Rosalind. The white on the wheels doesn't match the white on the body as well as I had hoped for, but I think it gives her that old stock car look. The wheels are temporary while I prep my Jeep wheels the way I want them when I am back home and/or have time.

I'll bump this up to the top, because I was going to ask the same thing about the center caps.

From my own searches, there appear to be four kinds of caps: snap-on, push-through, screw-on and bolt-on.  Feel free to correct me if the following is incorrect.
I've been unsuccessful in finding the bolt-on type.  There are plenty of the push-through type; am I correct that these won't work with the stock steel wheels?  I guess the wheels could be drilled and tapped for the screw-on type, which I can do, but I'd like to be a little more sure that this is how these are mounted before I purchase these and start drilling and tapping holes in the wheels.  Has anyone else found center caps that work with the stock steel Eagle wheels?

Thank you.

The stock steel wheels were never intended to be used with center caps. They are snug and do not have room for them. The stock steel wheels did come with a bunch of different hub caps from the factory however. The hub caps press in around the outer edge and cover everything. The nicest hub caps were the wire wheel style, then you have two generic plastic styles, and then you have a very rare option that is polished aluminum. That style is much more common in 14" on 2WD cars, but a 15" version did exist.

Thanks, Capt.  The car I'm referring to is EagleJoe93's; I'm his Dad.  His car has a complete set of the wire wheel covers, which are in pretty good shape, but I talked him out of keeping them on the car while he's away at college because 1) they're heavy, 2) they can be noisy, and 3) they're somewhat rare, and would be difficult to replace if one popped off or was, ahem, removed without permission.  As in Joe's pictures, we painted the wheels white and installed the chrome acorn lug nuts he bought for the alloy wheels we're refinishing.  Although the white is too white, it actually looks pretty good, but would look much better if we could find a chrome center cap that was held on by the lug nuts.  Because we intend to install the alloy wheels once they've been refinished, these caps are just temporary, so we don't want to spend a lot on them; that said, given how long it's taken to complete the work already done on Joe's car, it may be a pretty long temporary...  I saw a set of these on a car at a show a few years ago, but the owner didn't remember where he got them from.

Someone's gotta know where we can find these... thanks again.

My Spirit GT had the steel rims with chrome rings on the edges and a chrome center wheel thing with AMC on it. That would probably work on the Eagle wheel just fine but I never looked closely at how it attaches.

Carnuck, Joe's rims do not have any holes drilled in them for attaching center caps.  Maybe the Jeep wheels did, but not the AMC wheels on Joe's car.

Capt, you would have a picture of those wheels, would you?  There's nothing on Joe's rims to hold any kind of cap.  His wire-spoked wheel covers fasten around the outer rim, but there are no nubs, holes, etc. anywhere on his wheels to fasten anything else.

Thank you.

Hi everyone, sorry it has been so long. Going to a University of this level is very time consuming.  ::)

Since I have been so busy with school, not much has been done on Rosalind, hence why I have not been very active on the den. Over winter break some little things were done like aligning the headlights and replacing the side marker light bulbs. Though recently a problem has risen. I went to go start her up, and...she wouldn't. It appeared that the battery was just about dead. This was puzzling since the battery is less than a year old. Since I have been very much involved with school and school-related activities, my dad looked up possible issues and has since concluded that it is the alternator, which would explain the issues we have been having with the charging system and could have caused a drain. So a new alternator has been ordered and my dad will come up and help me install it on Sunday, and thanks to my RA and his Audi, I got a jump today and went for a half-hour drive to build up a charge so she is drivable for the time being until the new part comes.

Here is a new picture I took of her after one of the big snowstorms that have hit NJ.

I think Joe has a bad diode in the alternator.  I've never been happy with the voltage shown by the voltmeter, which has been maybe 12.5 volts, tops.  A correctly functioning alternator should put out at least 13.4 volts.  My understanding of alternators is a bad diode could cause a low voltage output and a parasitic drain.  A bad diode could also cause a very high voltage output; maybe it depends upon which diode is bad.  I was going to start with the usual voltage drain test, but the chronic low voltage made me look towards the alternator.  I'll still run a few tests, but I'm betting a new alternator is needed.  If anyone else has a suggestion, please chime in.

Joe, unfortunately the new alternator won't be delivered until Monday, so let's look to next weekend for a visit and repair.

So over spring break me and my dad installed a new reman alternator. She starts much better now, but the battery is being charged even when it is fully charged and is charging at a seemingly high rate. If I recall correctly, this is a GM alternator. My Uncle who has had a lot of GM vehicles over the years says this is a common thing with GM alternators. It also seems that the voltage gauge in my cluster isn't working properly.

I also recently got some headlight shields and installed them two days ago. I think they look nice and add to the classiness.  8) When I get the chance I'll add a picture. While installing them I noticed that some of the headlight hardware is in really bad shape. Is that universal stuff I can get anywhere or is there a particular place I can get them? I also ordered some new headlight adjusters since some of them need to be replaced.

So I am back home from college for the summer, so I plan on doing some stuff with Rosalind now that I have the time. One thing is upgrading the wiper arms. I have some new wiper blades because my current ones are bad, but the new ones won't connect to the factory wiper arms. I have heard that Jeep Cherokee wiper arms are suitable replacements, from what I gather any 95 and up model year should work. Here are some questions I have;

Is that year range correct?
Are the wiper arms the same length or are there any differences I should be aware of?
Are they difficult to remove?
Are there any specific or special tools I need to remove them?

I plan on heading to the junkyard to try and find a pair today. I would like to get this done so that I can replace my wipers ASAP.

Did you find a pair of wiper arms the other day?  I'm not sure of the exact range of years but I have the Cherokee wiper arms on both my Eagles.  I was tired of the wipers flopping sideways on those original Eagle wiper arms.

I'll try to post a picture so you can compare it with what you find in the junkyard.  Just make a note of what year Cherokee you took them from, and when you go to the parts store just find the blades for that year Cherokee.

Generally you can get the wiper arms off with a screwdriver pried up against the nut where the wiper attachment knob comes up through the sheet metal.  Just be careful not to scratch the nearby paint.

Good luck!

Yes, I did. As a matter of fact I didn't even have to remove them. The 1989 Jeep Cherokee I got them from had its windshield removed already and they were just sitting there in the passenger seat. Surprisingly that was the only complete pair I could find in the yard. Almost all of the other Cherokees were missing theirs. I wouldn't have thought used wiper arms was a part people frequently purchase from a junkyard.

I gave one of them a shot of paint since it was worn to bare metal in places and installed them. I'm glad I have the new wiper arms and blades installed, but for some reason the drivers side doesn't go down to the same level as the passenger side after use. Perhaps I have that one installed incorrectly?
