hey everyone. so i got carnuck's spirit that he had for sale, and i am going to build a sx4 clone out of it. so i started the tear down last week. i found very lil rust in the whole car. i am taking out the rear plastic side parts and going to sell them. i am also stripping all the tar and carpet. i know i will be putting in lizardskin and roll on bed liner. i have also pulled the rear dif out and i have an 8.25 diff going in, also i will be pulling the trans out tomorrow for the new aw4. after that will be the 242 tcase. i am up in the air abt the front end i want good gas mileage so i am thinking i will go with a vacuum front dif but i would use a cable on the dif. our i will use the none vacuum front dif i have. i am also thinking abt a two inch spacer lift in the front with custom upercontrol arms. i have pics so far but i dont know how to post them on here
-
I don't think that a vacuum front diff will bring you much in MPG's.
The vacuum system is a bit complicated too.
I would stay with a vacuum operated T/C, just two lines from the vacuum switch and has the advantage of being "Switch on the Fly" too.
-
Vacuum axle switched to cable shift is the way to go.
-
yea i am thinking the vacuum axle with a nice strong cable would be the best think for mpg and would be less work on the tcase when not in 4wheeel drive

the back of the car after a good scraping.

my old axle and the new 8.25
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/max98059/IMG_8578.jpg)
the dash. anyone want the old am radio and bezel. i am going to be putting in a double din screen in its place for the rear view camera and for the soon to be new member of the family.
-
Looks pretty solid, Just surface rust.
-
umm its a lil more than surface rust in the back. there is a few lil pin holes back there. but other than that its in great shape. the rust treatment works great thou. i have used it on my 79 mustang and was able to save a lot of puts that i thought where scrap metal.
-
The new axle seems a bit beefier. What have you got planned up front? Adding some horspower?
-
i am thinking about a 4.6 stroker. but that axle is out of my jeep cherokee
-
Didn't I read on the Nest somewhere that a Spirit to SX/4 conversion is very difficult because of the size difference in the transmission tunnels, and that the Spirit tunnel isn't large enough to accomodate the transfer case?
-
you are right vangremlin but i have an eagle wagon parts car for the new dog house i also think u could make a jeep cherokee dog house work but that would be more work
-
You likely read it in my project thread, "Perkiomen Project Pics" on page 2 and 3. I'm also converting a Spirit into an Eagle. Another member here on the nest has already completed a conversion. It's actually pretty easy because its just a matter of cutting a donor Eagle floor pan in the right spot to line up perfectly with the old Spirit floor. There is several pictures posted, including a picture of his floor already welded in. You don't need to disturb the subframe.

modified to fix link
-
the man thing that different is the cross brace also i want the tunnel to unbolt so i can work on the trans easy. but i do have an 82 Donner wagon for parts. also i was thinking abt the jeep cherokee seat tracks cuz they r off set for the tunnel
-
Probably need to make a channel that goes where the tunnel sits for strength so the floor doesn't spread apart.
-
hey stop stealing my thoughts man i am going to make a grove along with a set of bars that go across. by the way that pesky lil trans is out and laying on the ground.
-

I go by 1 OLD Ford Man for a reason. My mistake, to MY eyes, it didn't appear to have any holes is why I said solid/surface rust.
-
its ok it wasnt bad but just a lil more than surface rust and i found a 1"x1/2" spot
-
hey stop stealing my thoughts man i am going to make a grove along with a set of bars that go across. by the way that pesky lil trans is out and laying on the ground.

Wow, I didn't realize that curling and brushing your hair could be so dangerous! ;)
-
lol oh yes its very danger-es . how about transmissions and jacks
-
It's amazing what you find when you take stuff apart too! I'm VERY glad you found the title for the 5 ton! (behind the dash!) Now I can finally take it for scrap metal after I load it with stuff from the 5th wheel.
-
I think I need to change my Avatar
-
yes u do need to change it. and ur welcome abt the title to the 5 ton. what r friends for right

i found this little nasty creeper.
-
well i want the floor as a storage spot that is secure for a purse or something of value. also i am going to make this one stronger and removable. bwt casper do u need some interior quarter panels. i am sure i could have one of my family member bring it down to Hermiston if needed
-
does anyone know how to take out the carter feed back and wiring
We started today. Too bad the heat/cottonwood pollen made me feel so sick earlier
-
:o that looks like a fiddle back to me. i hope it didn't bite you because i've seen what a bite from one of those can do.
-
Just found out it's a Callobius spider. http://pep.wsu.edu/pdf/PLS116_1.pdf
Picture 6 on page 5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callobius_severus
Not deadly but the bite does hurt awhile
-
Yeah, definitely not a Brown Recluse. I've seen too many of those to count in MO.
-
me personally, i dont like the false floor. the sx4/spirit is limited on its space as is. the wagons false floor does have me thinking of a really cool subwoofer spot tho. ;-)
Since my spare is on my rear bumper on my 86, I replaced the door in the floor with a sub enclosure with a slim Rockford Fosgate 12. I hinged it so I could utilize some of the space for storage.
-
yea that sounds cool but with the baby no sub. also i will be building a computer for the car.
-
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the false floor. I gather you got it out of a wagon but I'm amazed it appears to fit perfectly, I sure wouldn't have expected that. Pretty cool - way to go Max98059!
-
It's from the wagon we're parting. Tomorrow will be another busy day with moving stuff, and cutting up the parts wagon. Anyone need body panels? Inner fenders? Rear 1/4s? Now is the time to speak up before we fire up the sawzall..
-
Front passenger dogleg would be good for me. gotta think about that cause shipping might kill it. Let me know via pm to keep your topic clean.
thanks
-
There is a parts thread here
http://forums.amceaglenest.com/index.php?topic=38647.0
Free rear interior panels from the Spirit (should fit some SX4s)

And my Eagle wagon for sale (link below)

ya it almost fits. its just a little to long and it will need bracing under. so i can cut off the feet also i will be putting a cage in for the stroller. to keep stuff in the back also.
-
If you drill holes to mount that false floor, remember what is just below! We had a member who was installing a stereo and drilled a hole in his gas tank.
-
Drilled a hole through a metal gas line once...was just glad I didn't blow up!
-
lol nope u will see how i am mounting the false floor. it will be stronger and use less space then factory.
-
Where did you get the false floor?
-
Looks like it was pulled from a wagon
-
Looks like it was pulled from a wagon
yes doc you are right the floor is out of a wagon an 82 wagon to be exact. i have parts for sale. they are listed on here
-
Yup

-
after a lot of hard work i finely got the floor chunk i need cut out
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/carnuck/spirit/success.jpg)
-
Hooray!
-
yea so i hope i get the tunnel in this weekend. but it all hinges on tomorrow.
-
Hope it goes good.
-
thanks man i am still wondering whats better for the under side of the car. i figure under coat or bed liner. i dont want to spend a lot but want something good
-
so today i went out and started to strip the under coating off
after a little work
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/max98059/IMG_8699.jpg)

Need to extend the 2wd column down 2 inches to match up
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y209/carnuck/spirit/tooshort.jpg)
We have a pair of these vacuum 2.72 front diffs for sale now.
I don't know why but floors seem to fall out whenever this guy is around!
-
i dont know also but i am keeping my front diffs for now
-
The big question is will you badge it as an Eagle our a spirit? ..or a mix of both?
-
i am thinking custom badges or none at all. but it will say 4x4 on it for mr. :police: man
-
the body looks pretty straight (i can't be sure if that is a dent in the left door). I would just polish it and leave it as is with the badges
-
yea thats one of the few dents. but i am thinking abt badging it as a Subaru :newbie: >:D
-
so i built this rack. what do you guys think.
-
Pretty cool. Looks a bit bulky and maybe too large for the size of the car...but it should do it's job hauling stuff around.
-
If your setting up for offroading as i see with gas cans. its horrible, unless a desert. also a cooler will suck ice in the wind.
so what are your intentions with that? no one can answer you without knowing its application.
-
Did you do any reinforcing inside? What did you do to make it water tight?
You did a nice job of fitting the feet to the curvature of the roof.
-
i put it on the reinforced part of the roof and its built for camping and off road. its also not 100% done.
-
It seems too tall to me..and I'm used to seeing like the Thule/Yakima top boxes that are built with much thinner piping so the large piping is throwing me off. It also seems to stick out past the windshield a bit. I'd keep it in line with the roof...and make sure you have it far enough in on the back that when you open the hatch it doesn't hit.
-
i wanted it to over hang the windshield for my offroad lights the are 7" hids. also i left a ton of room over the back hatch.
-
Interesting build. I think I will follow along!
-
thanks so do u have any pointers for me at all
-
The sealing will come later. (it's removable and fits into the back when not needed) For now, it's functional and light (made of aluminum). The tall rails will help keep things from bouncing out and straps will keep them attached. We should take a pic of both of us sitting in the rack! Maybe add Tom too! Lol! (on painkillers and having trouble sleeping due to torn rotator cuff)
-
For offroading its bad. trees will knock everything thatcis on it. or get stuck to it. i would never put lights on it for the same reason. however the trail i frequent has a swamp.
-
but i am still less than 6 ft which is shorter than most jeeps.
-
thanks for the info i was kinda thinking l.e.d and not the hid now
-
well we are off to Lake Havasu Arizona. all loaded up for camping with the lil one.
and me and my lovely wify shauna

-
Safe travel! Hopefully no more tires will come apart on you!
-
what route will you be taking.
-
I don't think he has net access at the moment. Last I heard from him last night a tire came loose. and that was I-5 near OR border
-
well all in all i made it down here pretty good i vapor locked 3 times on the way down. but it was a fun drive down.
so is there any nest members here in havasu
-
He was trying to sell his Eagle I think..
-
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/max98059/DSCN1614.jpg)
what happen when i was leaving seattle.
-
Told you that thing wouldn't last. Too many cracks in the sidewall and tread.
-
yea well u were right
-
sadly.
-
so yesterday i took my car off road for the first time and i broke the front left half shaft
-
it broke the inner joint so i had to jack it up out in the middle of the desert and take apart the axle then beat it apart. what a job in the sun. and idk how i did it. but i think i didnt like going 25-30 mph on the red gravel road. i am thinking s10 half shafts.
heres some pics of my outing today and yesterday.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/max98059/DSCN1686.jpg) its like 105 and 40% humidity out there.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/max98059/DSCN1683.jpg) my wife.
i only had 2wheel drive.
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/max98059/DSCN1690.jpg) the cactus these 2 both r over 400YRS old
-
i thick that the spirit upper control arms are different and give like a 2" lift. but mine is pretty high.
-
lol yea i took a look at the eagle arms i have and they r a little different so. but it sits really tall much taller then carnucks stock wagon. and all i did was leave the stock spirit spirngs and arms when i did the 4x4 change. oh yea i forgot one of the jeepers here said that the amc eagle is not an offroad car and amc didn't own jeep and when i was out and abt today he was stuck in a ditch. i pulled up and said well i guess u need a tow truck cuz my car is a pos wanna be 4x4 and he said no please help me so i pulled him out and he said thank you and i said that was in 2 wheel drive, his mouth just dropped.
-
Bummed me out because I put in brand new front springs to get lift and got only 2 inches. It does however ride MUCH nicer than it did before. (I used new springs for a Concord wagon with V8 and AC which had an extra coil round)
-
well now u can get the spirit control arms and get 4" of lift.
-
Sadly, I won't unless I sell some of my other projects
-
I was at a shop yesterday getting an oil (edit: not old) change (too hard to do myself with a broken shoulder) and checked out the drivetrain sitting on the floor from an '04 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 (V6 auto). The trans seemed almost identical to an AW4 but it's a 6 speed and the tcase front output is MUCH closer to the trans pan edge as well as a smaller overall tcase body. I wonder if that would work with a Jeep AW4 bell (I know the Jeep AW4 and 88 Toyota 4runner auto are the same bell pattern on the case as I test fit one, but the front out was on the wrong side)
Reason I brought this up on SOTE's thread was I'm thinking maybe it could have fit with no floor modifications to make it 4x4.
-
Well guys. It looks like SOTE is going to rise again! Making a deal to part trade against the Grumman van I sold Max98059 as he is too busy to do anything with it in the near future.
-
That's good to hear. What does it need to get on the road?
-
Still waiting for his old landlord to release it to me. NEVER work for your landlord on a 24-7 basis!
