Title: the spirit of the eagle build
Post by: max98059 on May 01, 2012, 04:23:22 AM
hey everyone. so i got carnuck's spirit that he had for sale, and i am going to build a sx4 clone out of it. so i started the tear down last week. i found very lil rust in the whole car. i am taking out the rear plastic side parts and going to sell them. i am also stripping all the tar and carpet. i know i will be putting in lizardskin and roll on bed liner. i have also pulled the rear dif out and i have an 8.25 diff going in, also i will be pulling the trans out tomorrow for the new aw4. after that will be the 242 tcase. i am up in the air abt the front end i want good gas mileage so i am thinking i will go with a vacuum front dif but i would use a cable on the dif. our i will use the none vacuum front dif i have. i am also thinking abt a two inch spacer lift in the front with custom upercontrol arms. i have pics so far but i dont know how to post them on here

I don't think that a vacuum front diff will bring you much in MPG's.
The vacuum system is a bit complicated too.
I would stay with a vacuum operated T/C, just two lines from the vacuum switch and has the advantage of being "Switch on the Fly" too.

Vacuum axle switched to cable shift is the way to go.

yea i am thinking the vacuum axle with a nice strong cable would be the best think for mpg and would be less work on the tcase when not in 4wheeel drive

Looks pretty solid, Just surface rust.

umm its a lil more than surface rust in the back. there is a few lil pin holes back there. but other than that its in great shape. the rust treatment works great thou. i have used it on my 79 mustang and was able to save a lot of puts that i thought where scrap metal.

The new axle seems a bit beefier. What have you got planned up front? Adding some horspower?

i am thinking about a 4.6 stroker. but that axle is out of my jeep cherokee

Didn't I read on the Nest somewhere that a Spirit to SX/4 conversion is very difficult because of the size difference in the transmission tunnels, and that the Spirit tunnel isn't large enough to accomodate the transfer case?

Post by: max98059 on May 02, 2012, 12:52:25 AM
you are right vangremlin but i have an eagle wagon parts car for the new dog house i also think u could make a jeep cherokee dog house work but that would be more work

You likely read it in my project thread, "Perkiomen Project Pics" on page 2 and 3. I'm also converting a Spirit into an Eagle. Another member here on the nest has already completed a conversion. It's actually pretty easy because its just a matter of cutting a donor Eagle floor pan in the right spot to line up perfectly with the old Spirit floor. There is several pictures posted, including a picture of his floor already welded in. You don't need to disturb the subframe.

the man thing that different is the cross brace also i want the tunnel to unbolt so i can work on the trans easy. but i do have an 82 Donner wagon for parts. also i was thinking abt the jeep cherokee seat tracks cuz they r off set for the tunnel
Title: Re: the spirit of the eagle build
Post by: carnuck on May 02, 2012, 07:32:32 PM
Probably need to make a channel that goes where the tunnel sits for strength so the floor doesn't spread apart.

I go by 1 OLD Ford Man for a reason. My mistake, to MY eyes, it didn't appear to have any holes is why I said solid/surface rust.

It's amazing what you find when you take stuff apart too! I'm VERY glad you found the title for the 5 ton! (behind the dash!) Now I can finally take it for scrap metal after I load it with stuff from the 5th wheel.

well i want the floor as a storage spot that is secure for a purse or something of value. also i am going to make this one stronger and removable. bwt casper do u need some interior quarter panels. i am sure i could have one of my family member bring it down to Hermiston if needed

Just found out it's a Callobius spider. http://pep.wsu.edu/pdf/PLS116_1.pdf
Picture 6 on page 5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callobius_severus
Not deadly but the bite does hurt awhile

me personally, i dont like the false floor. the sx4/spirit is limited on its space as is. the wagons false floor does have me thinking of a really cool subwoofer spot tho. ;-)
Since my spare is on my rear bumper on my 86, I replaced the door in the floor with a sub enclosure with a slim Rockford Fosgate 12. I hinged it so I could utilize some of the space for storage.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the false floor.  I gather you got it out of a wagon but I'm amazed it appears to fit perfectly, I sure wouldn't have expected that.  Pretty cool - way to go Max98059!

It's from the wagon we're parting. Tomorrow will be another busy day with moving stuff, and cutting up the parts wagon. Anyone need body panels? Inner fenders? Rear 1/4s? Now is the time to speak up before we fire up the sawzall..

If your setting up for offroading as i see with gas cans. its horrible, unless a desert. also a cooler will suck ice in the wind.

so what are your intentions with that? no one can answer you without knowing its application.

Did you do any reinforcing inside?  What did you do to make it water tight?
You did a nice job of fitting the feet to the curvature of the roof.
Title: Re: the spirit of the eagle build
Post by: max98059 on August 27, 2012, 10:10:26 PM
i put it on the reinforced part of the roof and its built for camping and off road. its also not 100% done.
Title: Re: the spirit of the eagle build
Post by: Prafeston on August 27, 2012, 10:29:12 PM
It seems too tall to me..and I'm used to seeing like the Thule/Yakima top boxes that are built with much thinner piping so the large piping is throwing me off. It also seems to stick out past the windshield a bit. I'd keep it in line with the roof...and make sure you have it far enough in on the back that when you open the hatch it doesn't hit.
Title: Re: the spirit of the eagle build
Post by: max98059 on August 27, 2012, 11:40:25 PM
i wanted it to over hang the windshield for my offroad lights the are 7" hids. also i left a ton of room over the back hatch.

The sealing will come later. (it's removable and fits into the back when not needed) For now, it's functional and light (made of aluminum). The tall rails will help keep things from bouncing out and straps will keep them attached. We should take a pic of both of us sitting in the rack! Maybe add Tom too! Lol! (on painkillers and having trouble sleeping due to torn rotator cuff)

For offroading its bad. trees will knock everything thatcis on it. or get stuck to it. i would never put lights on it for the same reason. however the trail i frequent has a swamp.

it broke the inner joint so i had to jack it up out in the middle of the desert and take apart the axle then beat it apart. what a job in the sun. and idk how i did it. but i think i didnt like going 25-30 mph on the red gravel road. i am thinking s10 half shafts.

heres some pics of my outing today and yesterday.

lol yea i took a look at the eagle arms i have and they r a little different so. but it sits really tall much taller then carnucks stock wagon. and all i did was leave the stock spirit spirngs and arms when i did the 4x4 change. oh yea i forgot one of the jeepers here said that the amc eagle is not an offroad car and amc didn't own jeep and when i was out and abt today he was stuck in a ditch. i pulled up and said well i guess u need a tow truck cuz my car is a pos wanna be 4x4 and he said no please help me so i pulled him out and he said thank you and i said that was in  2 wheel drive, his mouth just dropped.

Bummed me out because I put in brand new front springs to get lift and got only 2 inches. It does however ride MUCH nicer than it did before. (I used new springs for a Concord wagon with V8 and AC which had an extra coil round)

I was at a shop yesterday getting an oil (edit: not old) change (too hard to do myself with a broken shoulder) and checked out the drivetrain sitting on the floor from an '04 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 (V6 auto). The trans seemed almost identical to an AW4 but it's a 6 speed and the tcase front output is MUCH closer to the trans pan edge as well as a smaller overall tcase body. I wonder if that would work with a Jeep AW4 bell (I know the Jeep AW4 and 88 Toyota 4runner auto are the same bell pattern on the case as I test fit one, but the front out was on the wrong side)
Reason I brought this up on SOTE's thread was I'm thinking maybe it could have fit with no floor modifications to make it 4x4.

Well guys. It looks like SOTE is going to rise again! Making a deal to part trade against the Grumman van I sold Max98059 as he is too busy to do anything with it in the near future.
