Sunroof Weatherstrip/Seal
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:00:59 PM »
Does anyone know where I'd find a gasket/seal for the, apparently pretty rare, SX/4 sunroof?

Thanks!

I'm also in need of the rubber grommets for the bolts.

I would say check with an installer. Bolts should be easy. Gasket a little tougher. Should a universal kit available from them.

Are you talking about the glass seal or the seal to the roof?

Glass seal.  Looks as though it is just adhered into a tray under the glass.

The glass says Solarcool and is roughly 30"x15 1/4".  Weatherstrip is about a half inch smaller in diameter.

If that is for sure a factory sunroof then the seal may still be available from the dodge dealer. The last time I checked they still had the seal and the glass. I will look for that part number.

How would I know if it is factory?  I talked to Rick at sunroofdoctor and he said that AMC got their sunroofs from a place in Ohio, possibly Wisco, and if it were factory, they don't have any seals available.  This really looks like an aftermarket sunroof to me.  It resembles a Sunmate Classic or Autoport.

Mine has two, one-bolt, finger-like pieces on the front that hold it in and a handle on the back with two bolts to raise it.  It only has one position.  The corners are a "relaxed radius".  The glass can be removed, but one must first remove a c-clip and a pin on the handle side.  The trim ring is aluminum and has a sort of push-in flexible trim piece around the bottom/interior side that meets the headliner.  There are screw-on, wedge-like pieces that must hold the top piece onto the car from the inside by pressure.

How did you cross reference to these Jeep part numbers? The original part numbers were 813 3463 and 813 3464 respectively.

From your description, it sounds like a factory sunroof. The factory sunroofs were comparable to an aftermarket part. One good clue is the plain aluminum frame, many aftermarket units are black. If you could post a couple of pictures, I could confirm that you have a factory unit.

My 81 Concord had a factory bare aluminum sunroof, that is how I know this. There is an add on page for the owners manual ( I still have the manual and add on page). Later on AMC or possibly dodge started using j part numbers instead. When my sunroof got vandalized in 1999 the insurance company, glass place and all the dodge dealers swore up and down that there was no such thing and since they "knew" it was an aftermarket sunroof, thats all I got for a replacement.

About 4 years later I was involved in some office/parts counter remodeling at a local dodge dealer. They had a microfilm machine and a filing cabinet full of AMC microfilms of parts and diagrams. During the lunch break one day I looked up the sunroof diagrams and part numbers. Once I found them, took me 5 minutes, I printed them since the machine had a primitive heat impact fax like printer. This printout faded out to blank years ago but I wrote the numbers down before they completely disappeared.

That day I had the parts guys check for availability and the whole glass kit, frame/seals, hardware and the separate upper glass seal were available. I tried going after the the insurance company for my rightful replacement and got nowhere as they would have had to replace the roof, vinyl and headliner as well due to the larger replacement aftermarket one in there now from their mistake. They wrote me a cheque for $100 (my deductible back) and said that was all I was getting and if I pushed the issue further they would pull a full provincial safety on me. The aftermarket sunroof always leaked badly from day 1 and has since killed the car despite being removed and resealed many times. The factory sunroof never leaked a drop of water.

In the meantime I would clean it up real good and use a good bead of black rtv then set the glass in and buckle it down.

I called the local Dodge/Jeep dealers.  No luck so far.  One of them couldn't even search that style part number.  The other said he checked multiple dealers.

I ordered a seal last night from an on-line Mopar site. They showed that the part was available but today I received an email saying that the part had been discontinued by Chrysler and none were left in their "vintage warehouse". I had the same type results when trying to order some parts for my 87 Wrangler a few years ago. The parts were still in the catalog but were no longer available, apparently for quite some time. Chrysler must not keep their parts catalogs (at least Jeep) up to date. Maybe you'll get lucky and your dealer will find one at another dealer. Good luck! and let me know if you find a couple  :)

I'm not sure if it helps, but Kennedy American has one listed.  Part # 8134237.  It doesn't really give much information about it though.

It only shows up for the Wagons/sedans though.  I would think it would be the same for all of them but I haven't seen any up close to verify that.

Well now we know where Chrysler's stock went. ;) The Jeep list price on the on-line site was around $25, with their discount price being $16. Kennedy American's price is $40. I guess that's capitolism. Anyway I went ahead and ordered one but I am not overly optimistic. As with Chrysler, I've ordered parts before that were shown on Jeff's site, only to find out he didn't have the part in stock any longer. Actually when I was on his site just now he still shows a seatbelt for a SX/4 ( Spirit) and when I tried to order one two years ago, he told me he didn't have any left. Yet it's still listed on his site, so we'll see. Macdude443 , to order the sunroof seal you need to look under 1984 and newer. Thanks WoodenBirdOfPrey

I haven't heard a thing. I have been wondering what the status was myself. I am also hoping that it's the right part if and when I receive it. Still not 100% sure of the part number and the price was more than I really wanted to spend. I decided to take a chance and see what happens, time will tell.
Have you checked with the other major AMC vendors? Many of them bought up remaining NOS parts from dealers just as Jeff Kennedy did.

I received the seal yesterday. It does appear to be the correct part. I actually think it is an older part with an updated number. I say this because it has a AMC/Jeep logo with no Renault, so it must be from the early 80's. One problem that I'm not real happy with is the condition. I took it out of the bag and it is rather misshaped from being in the package for 30 years. I generally prefer repo rubber parts as I've run into the same kind of problems with NOS weatherstripping when restoring my AMX. If I keep it , I'm going to have to "rejuvenate" it to soften it up. I guess at this point that is my only choice unless I come across a suitable new replacement.

Did you check with any other AMC parts vendors such as Blaser's , APD or South Texas AMC? They all have many NOS parts in stock that are not listed in their catalogs.

Thanks for all the information here, I bought an Eagle Kammback that has an aftermarket Sunroof.  I'm not a fan of Sunroofs, (I never use the one on my Cadillac). but I'm stuck with what I have; I want to at least make it a factory sunroof.  Thanks for the information here, and what to look for!
