Front door speakers
« on: March 13, 2015, 11:28:43 PM »
I'm going to replace the speakers in my front doors. What are the largest physical size that you've put in?

I know 5 1/4" are the stock spec size, but I want speakers that will cover the outside edges of the leather door panel so I can remove the stock speaker grill.

Anyone put anything larger in?

The biggest problem is mounting depth.  You need a relatively shallow speaker to avoid interference with the window.

I've got 6 1/2" component speakers in my 86. Here's what I have http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7294_Phoenix-Gold-RSd-65cs-RSd65cs.html

You can still see a little bit of the corners of the old square cutout.

Wow that is freakin huge!

I was thinking of a few ways how to cover the corners that are cut out. My thought is to get a 1/8" or more thin piece of hard plastic or metal and cut it square with rounded corners about 3/4" larger than the square hole in the door, then make a hole in the center for the speaker and bolt it on.

I put 6.5's in my doors. They BARELY fit, but provide the best sound quality (proud audiophile that I am) and I am really happy with them. I used 6x9's in boxes (bought on amazon for like 20 bucks) in the rear. Cutting into the flimsy cargo panels didn't seem like a good idea to me and the boxes are easily moved if I need to haul anything.

I'm so disappointed with the speaker grills out there. They are hideous in Eagles. No offense guys. Jayson

I agree Jayson. That's why one of the back ones in my wagon is still broke.

A lot of the speaker grills look like a dog's breakfast. If you can find the right ones they look pretty good.

These are cheap and I'm considering them for the front doors of my car :

http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/dual-dls654g-6-4-way-speakers/6000089589147

And I might snag a set of these for the rear :

http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/dual-dls694g-6x-9-4-way-speakers/6000089589057

They have a nice look to them and don't sound all too bad from what I've read.

Another option is marine speakers, they all come with grills and are usually pretty good quality. A can of spray paint and the issue with their color is fixed. :)

I've seen the JBL line and their grilles look classy.  You have to go into the higher priced speakers for a better look sometimes.  I wouldn't bother with the Wal-Mart line myself.  However, if you're looking to replace the OEM speakers with something very affordable, try these:

I'm no car audio tech, but I would also suggest some sort of rear enclosure be added.  There are foam "buckets" available that require no modification.  Not sure if they'll fit the Eagle doors or not.  Such as these:

Problem is that shipping to Canada, if it's offered, usually eats up any savings from ordering new speakers online :/

Yeah, I could see why that'd cost a lot.

Here are pictures of the door speakers in my Eagles

This is in the Kammback, they are Polk Audio speakers that I got from Crutchfield.  They are labeled as shallow mount speakers.  You can see that the window handle rubs on them, I think that is more because my window regulator has some slop in it rather than the speakers being too big, as I don't have that problem on the passenger side.  The doors were already hacked up when I got the car so I've had to improvise on mounting the speakers.

Here is a picture of the door speaker in the coupe.  They are Panasonic and were in the car when I bought it.

Going back to this topic, I just bought a pair of Rockford Fosgate "Prime" series 5.25" speakers for my wagon front doors.  They are a very shallow design that shouldn't cause any problems.  They also mount behind the plate, like the OEM speakers did, so your factory grilles will work unmodified.  They're supposed to be a good factory replacement speaker.  They are 2-way. 4 ohm.

I heard the Dual 6.25" in action, they are rebranded and sold at Futureshop ( http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/dual-dls654g-6-4-way-speakers/6000089589147 )

They are really nice for $30, think I might pick them up soon, when I replace my antenna on the car. Tired of it sounding like crap

So did the Rockford Fosgate Prime 5.25 work with your stock radio as well?  I see they are still available...but Amazon doesn't think they fit the Eagle.  They did fit with no cutting right?

Yes.  They work fine with the stock radio and they fit with no cutting.  The grille fits right back over them fine.
