Headlight and wiper problems help!
« on: July 23, 2016, 09:59:29 PM »
Hello everyone I'm new here and the worst problem I'm having on my 83 sx4 is both my wipers and my headlights it's been a project car but I'm getting close and this is what's holding me back. So only my high beams were working I put a new switch in and still only the high beams someone told me adding relays would fix it but is there anything simpler that it could be? My wiper switch was bad it did nothing so I took it apart cleaned everything made everything tight and clamped it back in. Now it will make clicking noises in the switch and all it did for the wipers was push them down where they don't belong and now they are stuck there. Whoever had the car for some reason cut up the plug that goes to the motor from the loom so could that be it? Let me know everyone I'm really wanting to get her on the road. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks a lot!!

hi, and welcome to the world of Eagles, best  cars ever made! :)  Sorry, can't help you at this long distance with switch problems, but, new switches are available. Try APD, or Blasers,  I have had to replace a couple of those in my time. Before you spend money, educate yourself, get a TSM (Technical Service Manual) for your car, Usually available on ebay, you may have nothing worse than a a bad wire connection somewhere. Take a deep breath, focus, and start tracing wires from source to end. Sometimes the problem is nothing worse than a bad ground wire/connection. good luck, gz

Re the headlights; don't overlook the easy and obvious.   Could be both low beam bulbs are toast.   I've run into that a number of times over the years.   Pull a bulb and see if you're getting power to the low beam connector, or just plug in a new sealed beam.

Well, re the wipers all I can say is what AMCFool said; get the wiring diagram and start from scratch.   Who knows what the previous owner may have done.   Maybe the connecter was hacked to put on a non-original "rebuilt" wiper motor.

But first take off the wiper arms at the pivots; sounds like maybe they were put on in the parked position when the motor wasn't actually in the parked position.

So on my headlights are all four supposed to be lit on high and low? Or do the two inner ones turn off when you switch to low?

All 4 should be on when on high beam.  Only the 2 outer ones should be on when on low beam.

I figured that out on one of the other cars. But my wipers I replaced the plug that I think mice got to. And the wipers work but I can't get them to stay down whenever I turn the switch to off position they go back to all the way up. So now what do I do?

So I looked at my lights and I had no power to any plug when switched to low beam. So I started tracing wires and I found something that was messed with by someone. There's a lime green wire on my passenger side that runs across to the driver and into the loom. Well someone had clipped the green wire behind the lights on the passenger side and then they taped it back together and had a jumper wire connected to nothing. I was really confused there so I tested for power where they cut it. Still had nothing so I started tracing the lime green wire and found that up by my brake booster and master cylinder there was the lime green wire sticking out of the loom with a plug on the end of it. no other wires just the green one with a plug on it going to nothing so I tested for power there and still nothing. So my question it what is that lime green wire and why do I have nothing? I really need some advice on this and I really want it done right I don't know why people have to do this stuff to electrical instead of getting it right the first time.  :banghead:

Re the wipers; I wonder if some simp bolted the arm on the back of the motor 180-degrees off.   Easy to do when swapping a wiper motor if one doesn't remember how it was taken off.

With the switch in the off position and motor parked (ignoring where the windshield arms are), the arm on the motor should be pointing to the drivers side.   If its pointed to the passenger side, its 180 off.   Then have to take off the motor, unbolt the arm and flip it around the other way.

I was figuring it had something to do with the back of the motor so I'll do that next. So thanks and on my headlights I found that my low beam wire was just clipped off under my dash for some reason but I ran power to it to test and sure enough my low beams work so I'm excited I'm figuring all this out thanks everyone for the advice I really appreciate this forum!

Right?! I have no idea what someone was trying to do to this poor thing. I'm going to make sure I get everything right on it and back to normal though so that way I don't have to mess with all of that again. I mean I really hate wiring it annoys me but at least when I do mess with it I do it right. No wire nuts with tape wrapped around or exposed wires hanging everywhere lol I really just don't understand people hahaha.

hi, does your car still have its' original plastic valve cover? If it does, your best bet is to replace it with an aluminum one. Available most Jeep places, ie Quadratec, 4wdr Hdwr, Morris, etc. If you can afford to go top of the line, check out www.yourcovers.com, and look at theirs. The aluminum cover is not just for looks, more Eagles have been lost due to fires caused by the old plastic valve cover leaking than we care to count. good luck, gz

hi, so what broke, the hood release cable? this is not unusual, many eagles have a small vise grip permanently attached to the hood release! afriend rigged up a manual release from the out side, using just a small loop of cable. APD sells a repair kit, about $38. good luck, gz

I always stick it to the cover with some generic spray glue, like 3m Super 77 or similar.    Keeps the gasket in place when finagling the cover into place, and makes it not pooch out as bad when you tighten the bolts.   I put nothing on the head side of the gasket.

hi, so, install the valve cover gasket yet? not a bad job EXCEPT for the last bolt against the firewall. (you do have the 258 six, right?) a 1/4" FLEX extension is needed there, also helps if you take the wiper motor out of the way. good luck, gz

Thanks guys! And no I haven't just yet been busy and I'll need to clean everything really well around it before I do it cuz it's got a lot of residue everywhere. Is it possible to do it without taking the wiper motor off?

yes it is, but makes the job exponentially harder, the wiper motor is only four little screws, no need to disconnect it, just unscrew the whole assembly and lift it up and to the side as far  as it will go. Personally, I just take it off..but..don't lose that clip!  The valve cover will not lift straight up, no room, you will need to rock it side to side, and it will eventually clear and come off while tilting it to the PASS side. If it really will not come off, bump the engine over until the rockers on #6 cylinder are at their lowest point. good luck, gz

For what its worth, djdelee421, even after I removed my wiper motor (which IS really simple), I still had trouble getting to that back bolt.  The sheet metal (right under the bottom sill of the wiper motor plate) had a lip that protruded forward just enough to interfere with the action of my flex extension.  I ended up getting my Dremel and cutting out a 3 inch long section of that lip, just so I could get a straight shot at that bolt.  I also removed my hood, which helped a lot.

Other posters here seem to have gotten to it without as much drama, but that's what I had to do.

Figure it to be a three beer/two Bandaid job, at least.  Good luck with it.

Hey guys I got another electrical problem haven't gotten to the valve cover gasket yet. So in a base sx4 it should not have a rear defrost or wiper right? Well someone took the center dash piece with the radio and Heat a/c thing is at. Well they took that out because it was broken and put a wagon one in and for some reason the wires to the defroster switch are connected to something and the wires have power! So what do I do?! There's absolutely no wires going to the hatch. There's no wiper or defroster lines in the window so why is this switch connected and why is it hot? Thanks everyone

all cars were wired for whatever options the buyer did/did not purchase. Not quite sure why this is a problem for you, just cap 'em and leave 'em alone. good luck, gz

So it's okay that the wire is hot?

dont really know, just make sure you have a good wire nut or something on it so it doesn't touch ground (anything metal) and short something out, the factory usually had female spade connectors, insulated, on their power wires. good luck, gz
if anything, now you know you have a good power source for an accessory, like maybe a voltmeter, also check if it is switched or unswitched power, ie hot only with ignition key on, or hot all the time.

What does everyone put on their transmission pan? I have a rubber gasket and I'm curious what kind of adhesive to use. And in the filter kit I got 2 rubber gaskets do use both or is it a choice? I don't really get that
