Title: Elko, NV Plus Moab, UT
Post by: eaglefreek on May 31, 2012, 11:45:49 PM
My Eagle wagon had been parked in Idaho Springs, CO for the past 2 months. It was at Paul's (Strike Eagle) place. I drove it to CO with the intention of buying his Kammback and towing it home, but bought the other wagon with the V8 swap and drove that home. I was supposed to be back in a couple weeks but it didn't happen. I was asked to come back to Elko, NV for work, so I flew into Denver and picked up my wagon and drove 770 miles to Elko.

A minute after the pic above, I lost my waterpump belt. Luckily I had one and the tools to change it. It took less than 15 minutes.

No Nevada sign, it's not in a safe place to pull over and take a pic.

After work today, a coworker a I decided to hit some trails. There is a lot of public land around here. We went out for a couple hours. Here are a few pics I took. My coworker took some also but I'm waiting for him to email them to me. Our job has been delayed a few days, so we are going to do some exploring this weekend.

Nope, no problem at all.

I put right about 300 miles on the Eagle today. I started early in the morning and headed to Lamoille Canyon. It is paved the whole way but definitely worth the short drive from Elko. Absolutely gorgeous!

I then headed for a town named Jiggs. I read that there was a ghost town there. I drove the 30+ miles to Jiggs to find out the ghost town is just two old buildings with a couple other buildings from the last 50 years or so. One of those buildings was a bar. It was 10am and the sign on the door said open, so I walked in to see if the ghost town was down a dirt road somewhere. There was a rather elderly gentleman there and he said he lived there his whole life and didn't know of any ghost town, but directed me about 15 miles down the road to the Humboldt National Forest. I did see this Eagle parked in Jiggs.

Well, the guy was right. The road took me to the Ruby Mountains. This place was breath taking and packed with tons of trails. I only took a couple, but you could probably camp there for a week and not hit all the trails. I went back to town to pick up a coworker and came back. Most of the trails could have been done in a 2wd vehicle but there were a couple places where you need 4wd and low range.

We did manage to find ourselves on a trail we probably shouldn't have been on. It was quite rocky and narrow. Lots of trail pin striping on the Eagle. My coworker has the pics of that trail and I'll get those tomorrow. We thought it would take us to another trail to get out but it was a dead end but the view was awesome there. It would have made a fantastic campsite overlooking the whole valley.

I'm 2000 miles from home. I'm sure you can find mountains in less than 2,000 miles there in Europe.  ;D

Greate pictures and looks like you're having a lot of fun.  I think if you look closely enough at the picture of the Eagle in Jiggs you can see a ghost behind the wheel!

OK, didn't realize that. Yes within 2,000 miles we can see a lot in Switzerland, France, Spain and to the North the fjords in Norway.

These are some of the pics that my coworker took. The pics of the narrow rocky trail don't do it justice. It was about 2 miles long and took us around an hour to get to the one end. It appeared to be a trail for side by sides.

I am enjoying these pics. I am also jealous of your job  :rotfl: getting to see all these great places along the way.
That trail looks awfully narrow. Did the Eagle sustain any trail scars from that?
I really love that last pic with your Eagle descending way off in the distance, right in the middle of such vast scenery.

I honestly don't like traveling for work. However, I try to make the most of it, to make it tolerable. The only damage was a broken center cap. All the scratches from the trees came off with a light polishing.

I almost didn't see your car in the last photo! :)

And I've got 4 of those Jeep Center Caps if you are looking for a replacement. They are looking a little faded but are complete.

I'll keep this short, I'm tired and wrote out a whole report and mistakenly erased it. I went to Arches National Park in  Moab today. Here are some teaser pics. I'll post the details and some more pics in a few days.

I would have gone down it, but I was worried I wouldn't make it back up if the trail got impassible for me later on.

Here a couple pics from today. I met up with Paul, Strike Eagle, and we did some wheeling around Idaho Springs. I'll get the rest of the Moab and CO pics up in a day or two.

I made it home safe without any issues. I usually stop in Blue Springs, MO as my halfway point, but decided to go straight through. I did get a couple hours sleep in a rest area. The car ran great.
Here's a slide show of Arches national Park:

Don't you mean to the shag carpet! :)

Did you have to do any trimming to get the 225/75s on there? I might be better off looking into the 215/75s.

Glad you made it home safe.

Arches is such a cool place, as is everything around Moab.  Did you take the road from Moab along the river up to Cisco to get back on the highway?  That's such a fabulous drive.

No, I didn't know about that road. I cut my time in Moab short because when I was having trouble going up one of the obstacles, I backed up to get a better line and noticed fluid on one of the rocks. At that point my brake pedal went to the floor. I popped the hood and saw brake fluid dripping out the back of the master cylinder where it meets the power booster. No one in Moab had a MC, but a store in Grand Junction did. My plan was to swap the MC in a parking lot in Grand Junction. However, the brakes felt fine and there was no evidence of anymore fluid leaking. I made it home without any brake problems and actually the brakes felt better than they had in a while. Weird. I replaced the MC yesterday and still have some bleeding to do.

Its a little known fact that Eagles have a self healing brake system  :rotfl:

Looks like a great trip! I love the AMC logo on the roof rack, I might do something similar with mine.
