OK, I haven't been on in a while working to much I guess but I've finally started my rebuild.  Vanosh has torn my engine trans and transfer from my Eagle and I have helped as best I can and with a few more parts to purchase we should have the bird up and running soon   ;D  but now I have a new question

Does any one know or have the specs on the front coil springs for a waggon?  i.e. wire size coil spacing etc....  I'm not exactly sure what to ask but I have a friend that may be able to twist some new ones up so I need to know what numbers to give him.  I've searched the site but I guess I haven't put the correct criteria in so if you have the numbers or know of a thread that has already put these in I would appreciate any help I can get.  Thanks!!

I don't know the specs offhand, but I do know they were slightly different (left vs. right) to compensate for the drivetrain being offset to the right.

www.springsnthings.com sells new front coils, though when I asked them about the coils they said they're equal on both sides, which makes me wonder if it's their mistake or if it's really true the engine is offset. If anything I think it's probably to compensate for the driver weight, leveling the car out when they get in. There really aren't any other options out there that I've seen, unless someone knows of one. I'll put it this way. As long as the car sits uneven, but higher on the driver side when empty, then you have nothing to worry about, as of course that side will sink when you step in. The drivetrain would have to be noticibly offset for the car to need different coils from left to right. The engine itself with all internals weighs around or less than 500 lbs, and the gearbox and transfer case mated weigh around 140... In order for that amount of weight to make a big difference to one side, there would have to be an offset of at least a few inches, and having been under my car (while it's on a lift) I've studied the dogbone several times and it is centered or very close to it.

Thanks for the info I appreciate it, maybe Vanosh has an old set sitting around I can take measurements on.  I've looked at the springs and things site I'm just trying to see if my friend can make them cheaper and maybe a little taller. ::)

Yes, AMC used two different springs because of the offset engine and perhaps because of the weight offset of the front axle/differential.  When you order springs for an Eagle most suppliers are just using the spring rates for non 4WD AMC vehicles -- as those springs also fit Eagles.

Would you happen to know the stock spring rate and dimensions? I know of a few places that can make custom springs, and I wouldn't mind some that are a bit stiffer....

Is there a jeep model that uses similar front springs, that have an off-set spring set?  It seems when I go into a store (shop, whatever) and ask for AMC parts, they give you 'whatever', but if you go in asking for Jeep parts, it's a different thing.
