Title: Let's see your Fog lights!!
Post by: Screamin'Eagle on February 05, 2010, 08:07:03 PM
I Bought a set of Cheapo Amber 80's Hair band looking fog lights and I want to mount them above the front bumper.

But....... without drilling into the bumper.   I crawled up under the front bumper and I see a channel in there I ought to be able to mount a brackets that run up and have a bend in them to mount them.

So No matter if you drilled into the bumper or not please post some pics of your Fog lights or driving lights.

Maybe it'll give me more incentive to mount mine! :)

Mine are after market replacements mounted in the original holes.

Mine are just aftermarkets too, I've had them for several years and they're showing their age now. My bumper already had holes drilled from the factory and had plugs in them, so I just had to bolt them on and wire them up. They really help out on those foggy mornings.

Scored some Marchals to mount in original holes on bumper. Have the black marchal covers for them as well.

I mounted some after market lights below the bumper.  I used a piece of angle iron for a bracket.
I mounted it to some bolts that were already in place so I wouldn't have to drill holes.
I have since replaced the lights with clear ones, mounted to the same bracket.

Sweet!   I wish mine already had some holes in the bumper. I REALLY dont want to put any in it.

But.......... Really Want to put the fog lights on it.  >:D

you could do like some of the others and fab up some brackets. have a tab you can slip onto one of the bolts that holds the bumpers on and have a piece of flatbar that runs over to where you'd want the lights and comes up enough you can bolt your light onto.

I think I want to do that instead of drilling into the bumper.

The pics are awesome guys and gals!  Keep em coming.

Do you live near by? Lol... We have about that much snow here weekly-ish!

The holes were already there on mine, but if I recall correctly, I made new holes to mount mine the upper ones, outwards frome the originals, and used the old holes to run my wires through.

The ones lowest I drilled new holes. three for each light if I recall correctly. two forthe mounting bracket, adn an extra to run the wires in through.

I understand your pains about drilling/making holes.

If i didnt already have holes, i would have waited til I fabbed up a grill guard/deer/bull/bush guard deal before I mounted the lights.
On one hand, i feel kinda bad, but on the other hand, the PO had already wrecked it.. so whatever.

I felt worse about mounting the switch for them. The PO also had a switch screwed into the interior on the dash. I removed the old fried switch and replaced it with a new one for the Upper driving lights. the lower/second set has a switch that just stickied itself, which I mounted an inch or two above the other one. Its easily removable and damage free when I get around to redoig all my electrical.

The other random switch I have is to control the electrical part of my sol-vac. its just ziptied to my stering ciolum. When I get around to redoing my ligthts, I will fab a brackcet and have them all zip tied to my steering colloum. Or if I can get ahold of a center console thingy, mount em on there.

I feel your pain and wish there were no holes in my bimper... buuut.. too little too late.

My biggest problem now is,I plan to fab a sort of lightbar to go across the roof with lights on it, but how do I run the wiing without drilling holes in the roof or duct taping the wirings to the front side posts.... ????? UGH!!

I would like to add Fog Lamps to my Eagle. I have the original dash mounted switch and the wiring harness from interior, but I DO NOT want to drill holes in my bumper. Where could I mount them, or how without doing so? I would like it to look original.

I mounted mine underneath without drilling holes.  However, we don't have front plates in Arkansas.  (Heck, some people don't even have back plates. ;))
It may be possible to use longer bolts and mount both the plate and a bracket.  Of course, you have accomplished your mission already.  Looks good.

It's from a 79 Concord.  We once thought that it was a one-year one-model only grill but now I'm not sure that is actually the case.

Question. I'm wanting to get the Marchal OEM Fog Lights, but want to make sure I'm getting the right ones especially if I've got to pay the high price on these suckers. It seems they are the Marchal 750/759s that went on the Ford Mustang from '79-'86.

I'm also going to have to drill the holes in the bumper. I was feeling a little reluctant to do this at first, but I think as long as it's done right it will look original and I won't be worried about it. I was gonna ask if I could get measurements on where the holes should be located, but I believe my '80 Eagle has the holes in the bumper so I can do that myself.

Thanks for posting up all these Fog lights. It's cool to see all the variations.

Me too!  How far from end of bumper to center of hole, how far from back of bumper to center of hole, and how big is the hole diameter?

You are correct, it is the SEV Marchal 750.  The whole kit includes wiring, relay, and special dash mount switch.  Darn these Ford guys driving the prices up!

Ok, I had some time before work today so I headed over to my dad's where Threepete is stored and took some measurements. THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM A 1980 EAGLE. I'm not sure if bumper end caps or bumper protectors on later models are in the same place. I'd say the best measurement to go by is headlight trim to hole and then the hole to hole measurements. As long as it's all centered on the bumper it should be fine.

1. Bumper End Cap to middle of hole - 18 11/16"
2. Engine side of bumper to middle of hole - 1 3/4"
3. Front of bumper to middle of hole - 1 3/8"
4. Headlight trim to middle of hole - 2 15/16"
5. Bumper Protector to middle of hole - 6 5/16"
6. Hole to Hole from the middles - 21 3/4"

I hope this photo isn't too confusing. I tried to show each measurement on one photo. You'll notice there is no headlight trim in the photo...I stupidly took the photo before I prepared to measure. I did put the trim on and take that chain off so the measurements should be correct.

:o WOW!!! :o  That is absolutely what I was hoping for!  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
I'm sure this will be the go-to reference for people doing this project for years to come!
You rock, Prafeston!!!! :blob1:

I just assume that Eagle/Spirit/Concord all used the same bumper but you're right, they could very easily have changed along the way or had slightly different measurements for different models, etc.  You have provided several reference points to make absolutely sure it is right!  Very smart, sir. :hello2:

Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that those are factory holes, and not something somebody else did later on!  If Threepete has the Marchal foglight wiring and switch mounted correctly to the left of the gauges in the dash, that is good enough verification for me!

One other thing I might ask, the diameter of the hole.  Probably just big enough to be a proper hole for the foglight mounting stud, but if I'm going to do this I want to do it right.

Once again, you completely rule and thank you very much! :occasion14:

Well I went and checked on Freeagle and I didn't see the stock fog light switch or even a hole where one should be. So these holes for the fog lights may not be stock. Might be good to have someone who knows they have the stock fogs do these same measurements.

Judging by the photo carnuck has of his fog lights the holes on Freeagle look a little wider. On carnuck's the fogs seem much closer to the license plate and much farther away from the headlight trim.

I like mudkickers round lights on that black eagle. the local big rig shop has some like them. they come with 50w bulbs but you can buy 100w replacement bulbs. I've also been thinking about changing my main lights to dual round on the old wagon.

Anyway you could check out the "Show me your fog lights" thread. We need some measurements for where the holes are drilled in the bumper. That's assuming your fog lights were stock.
I have two front bumpers. One is for work and testing. The other is for show. Both are aluminum. I recently undid my fog lights to eliminate an electrical issue and to do drilling measurements on a pre-Setina brushguard for front+bottom securing.

Bumper length: 53.25"
Guard length: 24.25"
Guard centering from ends: 14.5"
Foglight distance from ends: 18.5"

So you see there I have 2" of overlap on each foglamp and since they're round they bulk out and they're in the way. They have to go. I'm more than likely going to scrap this project if I can't get a welder. I'll just make new measurements and machine a new bumper. (´・ω・`)

Agreed, in looking at various photos and ads the original holes seem to be closer to the centerline of the car.

Also, loosely setting my newly-acquired Marchals on my bumper shows that they would be blocking part of the turn signal lens and hi-beam if mounted where your holes are.

But I have to commend you again, you really did a bang-up job of locating the holes on yours so even a dummy like me could get it perfect.

His fogs appear to be original, but the measurements he gave don't help quite as much. Would really be better to have measurements from the center of the holes.

The holes for the stock fogs look like they are almost 2x as far from the headlight trim and bumper protector than the holes on mine.
Title: Re: Let's see your Fog lights!!
Post by: SpiritGTMan on March 07, 2012, 10:47:04 PM
I may just find my own mounting locations.
Here's my recent acquisition.  Notice the mounting cones.

The mounting cones present a little bit of a dilemma because of the ridge on the bumper.

If I mount them on top of the ridge, part of the cone is hanging off the bumper but the light ends up positioned nicely.
If I mount them forward of the ridge, the cone mounting surface is all on the bumper but the light ends up forward of the bumper and looks awkward.

As for how far inboard from the sides of the car they should be, I think about 1" in from where the headlight trim meets the grille.

(http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/431548_3056912055728_1051149221_32865978_923464250_n.jpg)(http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/430420_3056911975726_1051149221_32865977_1211135810_n.jpg)

The grille is 81-83 Spirit.  You may also notice that the bumper stands out from the front of the car further than on an Eagle.

I know I'm being nit picky, but I am still looking for the exact location of the fog light holes drilled in the front bumper. I want them to be in the correct stock location. I know I could look at some of these pictures and probably just guess, but I want it to be precise! :)

If you could grab some measurements like the ones I made on Threepete before I realized they were drilled in a non-stock location...Threepete didn't have fog lights from the factory.

Here are mine. My car did have factory fog lights, and these are directly fitted to the original housing using the factory dash switch. Now...mine are IMPERITIVE, because, as you can see, my headlights are not...quite....straight.

i wouldnt piddle around with "fog" lights and such anymore...

Go with LED light bars.

Sure, they're a bit pricey, but you get the right brand, they have a lifetime warrenty... you can tie the cord around your bumper, and drag em for 100 miles over whatever terrain you like, and stop n plug em in and they will still light up the world bright as the sun, and still be covered under warrenty if they fail afterwards.

they also consume waaay less power.

last time I used a light bar, (24") a guy brighted me... I flicked my high beams on and off. he flashed me and went back to high beams. I flashed mine again.. he flashed me back.. i hit the "Daylight" button.

from 2kms away, I could tell you what shade of yellow his teeth were and how wide his eyes opend, and how hard his jaw bounced of the steering wheel before he brought his arm up to shield his eyes.

My dakota I have over 900 watts of "Daylighter type lights" when I turn them all on, it cionsumes too much poer, I cant leave em on very long at all. I have to aim each light to a desired spot to light up the optimum amount of usefull viewing area..  with the light bar, I just sorta aim it, and it out does all those lights by far, and uses like 1/10th of the power.

Im converting my quad to leds next.. 4 2x2" lights will give me 6X as much light, and use 1/3rd the electrons.

and Im not talking bout lame LED headlights.. im talking bout light bars, you can get em in single or double rows, and from like 2" to 72" long, order to fit your needs.. various designs etc as well..

I love technology!
