They are building a new store about a mile up the street from me and I was wondering if anyone has done business with them before. Are they any better than Autozone or Napa?

all the same. if you get the wrong counter help all of the chains are worthless. I used to only deal with them when I lived out west (they where called checker).

From my experience, the employees have generally been less knowledgeable than the ones at NAPAs I've gone to.
That said their prices have seemed a bit lower, and I don't think I've ever encountered a time where I've had to pay for any type of shipping or freight.
There have been some parts that O'Reilly hasn't been able to get me before, whereas the other chains have been able to. And its gone the other way around.
Basically, they are just like any other parts chain. There are ups and downs to them.

Like Bill said, it depends on the counter help. I typically use Advance here because they are typically more helpful. I went to the Oreilly's a couple times here and both times I got the same guy. I felt like I was bothering him.

what the true test of any counter help is to ask for a carbrator for lets say a 1983 chevrolet with the 5.7 liter engine. if they don't ask "you want original or aftermarket" just turn around and walk away

All counter help under the age of 50 is a PITA these days. try walking in and saying you need #48 jets for a Motorcraft 2150 carburetor. 100 questions later covering everything from the trim of a make believe vehicle to what type of tranny, you order the jets and they send you #55's. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

You can buy jets for the MC 21XX's from the auto parts store? I thought those were made of unobtainium.

I think most of the staff at O'Reilly's is not very knowledgeable, unless you find one with some grey hair. The folks at NAPA seemed better trained, even the younger ones, but like Gronk says, NAPA is usually more expensive. I've bought a lot of stuff from O'reilly/Checker and never had any problem with the quality.

What I do is ask them for a '53 VW radiator, if they say "WHAT" you know your in trouble. LOL

Or just ask them for a set of spark plugs for you cummins dodge....believe it or not I have had them try pulling that up on the computer.
O'reilly, schucks, and checker all pret descent. Prices are right between autozone and napa. on hand inventorey is usually pretty good too.

Unobtanium is close. That's why I have mine machined. I can order them 1 at a time now or 1000 at a time. Anyone need jets, let me know. I have about 5000 in stock. :)
Holley killed most of the MC line years ago. Bastages.....

I prefer O'Reily's over AutoZone here in my town. I've had some pretty crappy counter service at AutoZone.

I've used all of the major chain stores around here. Store name didn't matter it was really the guy behind the counter that made the biggest difference. Age of the person didn't matter either becasue I've dealt with a couple of guys at O'reilly that were over 50 and they just didn't care to do much digging, theyususally stumbled though the whole computer entry thing and when they couldn't find something in 3 or less mouse clicks they were done while I had one college guy who went the extra mile to find some hard to find parts for my Nash. O'Reilly has typically had more of the hard to find parts or had access to them if they weren't on the shelf.

I use O'Reilly's often and usually have pretty good luck with them. I also use Advance and NAPA. I use Autozone less often because it is not as conveniently located, but they seem to have some of the smaller unusual parts the others don't have. I have been warned away from Autozone electrical parts like alternators.
I also agree that it is the counter help that makes all the difference. I think most of the stores have access to most of the same parts if they have someone that can find them.

I'm an ASE certified mechanic as well as ASE certified in parts sales. Having worked for O"Reilly (and Buick and Honda and Checker and more stores than I can recall over the decades) and currently, happily working for CarQuest Auto Parts, I have to agree with the "don't trust anyone under 30" concept. There are great counterpersons and pathetic counterpersons at any store. The way a corporation treats their employees has a direct relationship on said employee's efforts. (Did you hear that, O'Reilly's?) I really like my job particularly because I know I'm helping people who actually need my expertise. Asking me for Cummins spark plugs, Halogen fluid and '71 Beetle radiators really ticks me off. I hope that post was a joke. Essentially it comes down to MODEL, MAKE AND YEAR which many people (even shop managers!) surprisingly don't even know and expect me to be psychic. :amc:
