Title: 82 SX/4 - Denver
Post by: vangremlin on March 11, 2017, 07:22:42 PM
There is an SX/4 that just arrived at the LKQ Pick  Your Part near Denver.  Its an 82, 258, 5 speed.  The car is generally in good shape, but it looks like the owner totally tore the interior apart for some project, then never got around to the project.  Pretty much every part is still there, but it is all apart.

I grabbed the rear bumper ends, interior windshield trim, floor console which has a cubby and is for a manual transmission,  intermittent wiper switch and control, radio pod, and some other stuff.  Going back tomorrow to grab more.

What a shame. I think this car might have been for sale out on the Western Slope Craigslist about a year ago. :( It was running and driving then. Looked a bit rough but not bad.

I can't think of anything I really need, but I know some people might be interested in the parts to do the 5 speed swap. Also that rear wiper. Tilt steering column someone might want. And headlight bezels/buckets.

I would possibly be interested in the Eggcrate grill if it was in good shape and not too expensive. I've kind of been thinking about going back to that grill cause I have the slat grill from an 80 on there now.

Remember the sport mirrors you nabbed for me! Looks like your rear end caps had the same problem! haha

That's what I thought of when I saw the nest also lol.  I think there was more packed into the mirrors than on these end caps, because I had dug out a lot before I ever shipped those mirrors to you.

The grill isn't perfect, there is an imperfection on the upper right corner that they tried to patch, it may be possible to disguise it with some sanding and paint, right now the grille has no color to it.

I'm sure there is somebody out there that would love the 5 speed and some of the parts that go with it.  But by the time they pay what the junkyard will sell it for, pay for my time, and pay for shipping, its going to be pretty costly. Maybe there is somebody local that can go and take it out of the car themselves.

I hate pulling headlight buckets because you have to do all the work before you know what kind of shape they are in.  Lots of hidden cracks that you don't see until you do all the work to get them out.

Could you get some pics of the grill next time you go? I'm also considering doing a Sport Black Trim on Penny as well so I'd be painting the grill black. So bad chrome and stuff isn't going to bother me.

That rear window and wiper would be worth saving.  I've seen lots of hatchbacks, but very few have this option.  Try to cut the rear window seal, get the glass w/ wiper assembly.  You'll be glad you did.

I've only seen one other in the yard with the rear wiper.  And I believe the glass had already been removed from the car (either that or the whole back hatch had already been taken off) so it was no effort to remove it.  I actually didn't take it, Shanebo came up from Colorado Springs and took that and the 5 speed transmission.

I went back today and pulled the hood release, door panels, door handles, sending unit, front bumper ends, one headlight bucket (the other one had a crack in it that was only visible after doing 10 minutes worth of work pulling other parts  :banghead: ), and I also grabbed the seats because they were in such good shape.  I don't really need them and I don't know where I will store them but hated to see them get scrapped.  Thought about pulling some other stuff but was running out of steam at that point.

What a shame.. rear side lights, Rear 1/4 glass window trim that mounts into rubber(had a hard time finding a rust free set of 4), looks like rust free doors

Looks like the end caps are in good shape. I had a mint pair that I sold about a month before buying my sx/4 and never come across another set. Ended up cutting down 4 door wagon ones to make them work

Thanks.  I know some of the SX/4 parts are pretty rare, it will be good to see them go to good homes.  Plus, I just like going to the junkyard - weird, I know.

Someone already claim the fuel sender? I might be interested if condition is good.

The rocker panels are in bad shape, and there would probably need to be some reinforcement of the front attachment for the leaf springs.  Front end looks very solid.

I need the grille, end caps, seats...

I didn't pick up the grille, but here are a couple close up pictures.  Its pretty solid other than a couple imperfections, I think it could be made to look pretty good.  One of the top mounting tabs is broken but could also be repaired.

I need to determine if the sending unit is functional before selling it.  Thanks.

Would love to but my weekends are booked up for the next month. How much are they asking for the 5 speed.

I think their price list says its a little over $100 for the tranny, plus $30 core charge, plus environmental fee and sales tax.  You'd probably be looking at $150 or so total.  They cycle through the cars at this yard pretty quickly so it will probably be gone in 4-6 weeks.

My sx/4 had a rear wiper but someone replaced the glass with a non rear wiper glass and there is no wiper on it at all now, only the rear washer thing on top. I would buy the entire rear hatch if I had too, Mine has rear defrost. I really want to put the car back to original and get the rear wiper back on it. So if the rear hatch with the glass and wiper and all is still for sale I'd like to buy it and have it shipped. If not please keep your eye out for another for me.

Unfortunately this one is long gone.  The junkyards around here generally don't keep cars more than about 4-6 weeks.  I'll let you know if another SX/4 shows up!
