Title: What are those strange flaps in the air intake? Are they needed for anything?

Hello, im currently restoring an old sx4 that i bought and noticed that there are some strange flaps in the air intake , they seem to be vaccum activated... Do i need them? What do they do?

If they're what I think you're talking about, they cut off the cold air till the engine warms up to help it run better.

One flap is the heat stove inlet and is operated by the Thermostatic Air Cleaner valve to pull warm air in when the air temperature is too cold (helps a lot when its cold outside). The other is the vapor control door and seals the air cleaner off when the engine isn't running so evaporating gas doesn't escape.
