It's an idler. You should be able to pull it out and take a look, it is just held on with one bolt in the back. I don't know if you can disassemble it or not.

On the 4.2 the idle pulley is at the top.
I'm right 98% of the time, and I don't care about the other 3%.

not sure if i can bypass it or not, this pulley is located beneath the compressor and the belt goes from crank to  idler pulley on top (which has the groove for belt) to compressor, belt rides on top of this pulley (which has no groove for belt, back side of belt rides across this pulley) then goes back to crank..if i try to bypass i will need shorter belt, can it be done?

i would think a shorter belt would work fine, i can't think of any real purpose it had being there

I'm guessing that idler is there to control belt slap on the long side of the belt. Mine has been off for several years and I've had no ill effects...I think you can do without it if it's failed. :eagle:

I either need to get one of these or do without it, or try to rebuild it

Mine makes a noise till it warms up a bit, think it's on it's way out!

I read soe where on here that you can just replace the bearing in it

I took mine off & ran a shorter belt. I didn't like the fact that there wasn't a groove in the pully & the belt always seemed to ride to one side and almost off. I made adjustments etc. but it made me nervous. The shorter belt gives no problem. Kennedy Anerican may have one if you still want one. Give him a call & sometimes he actually puts you on hold while he checks his yard for a part.
