Title: Rocker panel repair rock sliders?
Post by: Mauieagle80 on October 24, 2019, 07:23:40 PM
So after alot of sitting my eagle is gettig ready for some action. I finally got my oil leaks fixed and frint end rebushed so now i am looking at all the hidden rust that life on a island is starting to bring out. A couple of sheetmetal patches on doors and quarters and some hood putting but the biggest trouble is the rockers. Drivers sidd is detached from the floor 80% and passenger side is holy on the outside but mostky attached. So basically they are junk. And being that i live o and island i the middle of the ocean there is no hope of cuttig up one in a junkyard or anything like that and the internet has not revealed a patch panel company specializig in eagles :rotfl:

So what i am looking at is 2x6 or 4x6 zj or xj style rock sliders likd the ones iron rock offroad makes a kit for. Its a little different for eagles since our floor pan is alot lower in respect to thd rockers than a zj. But after spending some time measuring yesterday it looks like it can me done. I am thinking cut out the rockers and their backing leaving only the upper doorjam and interior area.  Then cleaning up the floor pan edge and welding sections of 3/4" angle iron to it welding that to the thicker 4x6. Then welding the upper rocker/lower door jam area to the top of it. Then some bracing on the forward leaf spring mount and maybe some bracing over to the "frame rails" and it should be pretty solid.

Has anyone here ever done anything like this? I am someone with fair fab skills and will to commit to a project i start.

I used these on my SX/4 https://www.ebay.com/i/142124414095?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=142124414095&targetid=596465944748&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9024183&poi=&campaignid=6470719340&mkgroupid=77931583832&rlsatarget=pla-596465944748&abcId=1140476&merchantid=101690584&gclid=Cj0KCQjwl8XtBRDAARIsAKfwtxBCzFLG3O5AcUQQUl5jx-oQSk_rkye2KFU5tn1IY7Kmms5f7NHY5pYaAhCPEALw_wcB

Hey thanks for a quick response. That would be a cleaner repair i imagine. Do you happen to know the length on them? Im looking at needing 6'6" on my wagon. Maybe i could splice 2 pair together aswell.  I do like the idea of a heavy duty rocker though. I will definitly take those into consideration. Thankya.

Yeah if i can get a decent price on shipping I will go that route. I called the only decent metal yard here on maui and they were talking about 400+ for the amount of boxed tube i would need to do it.  Im getting excited about all this body work I have done 3 fair welded in  patches so far and they look pretty good after filler. I only have 4 more to go till all the big holes are partched. Thaen the rockers. The only thing holding me back is my flux core welder. Argon gas is also as costly as gold here too!

Side note our eagle made it in the January issue of FourWheeler magazine! We are basically famous now  :occasion14:

Do you think these would fit an Eagle sedan?  Not sure what the length differences are between the hatch, sedan and wagon.  I know this was an older post, but does anyone have a length on these new pieces?  Thanks!
