Converter not Required?
« on: March 19, 2021, 12:47:21 AM »
I know in most places if your emissions sticker says CATALYST the converter needs to be present for an inspection.
Curiously my 82 Eagle (Canada built) came into my hands without one. The Emissions sticker lists the EGR and EGS but no CATALYST. The field for the converter in by VBO sheet is blank.

I know that Canadian emission laws were a little late but it seems that by 1988 it was mandatory that vehicles imported into Canada must have one. I can't find anything for when vehicles manufactured in Canada had to be equipped with one either. All I know is that Catalytic Converters were pretty much mandatory in the states by the end of the 70's. If I'm reading this right I'm not required to install a cat, right?

In Canada the Eagles were classified as a light truck which allowed them to skirt the catalytic converter requirement. IIRC it allowed them to skirt the five mile per hour bumper laws as well.

IIRC they were classified as light trucks in the United States too. I also read somewhere they were considered compact cars too?

My 85 Eagle doesn't have one, I'm also in Canada. It appears to have a resonator in that place though.

The sticker for my 80 wagon labels it as a light truck and the sticker is for the U.S.

The parts manual only lists a converter for the US and Japan.  Shows a resonator for all others.
