258 Cast Aluminum Valve Cover From Turner's
« on: November 29, 2013, 08:15:15 PM »
We are very pleased with the deal we got on the cast aluminum valve cover from Turner 4WD Parts.
Part No. 83501398-KAC
 —$99.95 plus shipping.

This replaces the plastic valve cover that leaked on our '83 Eagle 258. The $99.95 price was less than other places and the cast aluminum valve cover is much more durable. We had to tap a few extra drilled holes in the top of the block under the new valve cover. Those holes were already drilled from the factory but were never tapped. No big deal to just run a tap with some tapping oil down those holes.

If you do this one plan on about a day and be in a patient frame of mind. We removed the hood to make things much easier and to move some things on the firewall to have more room to work. You'll need a little extra room to work, especially when screwing in the screw on the back of the valve cover at the firewall.

This is a good valve cover.

I put one of these on 10 years ago, still looks great and no leaks!

Mine came with bolts that used Allen wrench to tighten, made that back one a little easier to snug

I looked at Turner's web site and couldn't find the $99 aluminum cover.  The part number mentioned in the original post seems to be a plastic one with gasket for $69.   They do have an aluminum one for $142 tho.

I did a used aluminum cover and used studs instead of bolts along with Tee handle bolts (like used on hotrods)

AMC of Houston,

I think you'll like that cast aluminum valve cover.

Mine came with the allen head bolts and lock washers, the gasket, the oil filler plug and rocker arm stand needed when you switch over to the aluminum valve cover.

AMC drilled the holes in the top of our 258 head for the old style steel stamped valve cover but on the later blocks with the 2-bolt plastic valve covers they didn't tap all the outer valve cover holes. No problem to just clean the crud out of the holes and run a tap down with some tapping fluid.

Best wishes

My '85 has a smidge over 200,000 on the clock, and its still 100% stock and original (so far) and a 100% rust-free west Texas car; but I'm tired of resealing the valve cover every 25,000 miles.   Won't be able to say "100% stock" any more.   Oh well.............

Felt the same way about my 86 wagon. One hundred percent stock but that leaking plastic valve cover had to go so I sucked it up and on went the aluminum valve cover. Gotta tell ya I never looked back.Looks great and no leaks either. That was a win win situation. I don't believe you will regret it!

Even a different valve cover still allows it to be a "survivor" in most any car show.  Typically, two or three minor mods are allowed.  My Ambo still barely qualifies with its non-stock intake, carb and wheels.

Of course at most all-make shows, nobody will know if the car is all original or not -- since AMC's are quite mysterious!!

That is a gorgeous Ambassador. Great all around styling, smooth ride, great handling and power.

What a great car Iowa Eagle. I believe the Ambassador is one of the best cars ever made.

Have you had it out on the road very much since you got it?

Thank you very much.  I have had a blast with this car since I purchased it in May.  I entered it in car shows quite a bit this summer.  Three trophies scored, once in the survivor class, once in the Mopar class (Two AMC's scored in that show, out of three trophies awarded for MoPars)  and then a top 50 trophy in a 250+ car show..  I put about 3,000 miles on it this summer.  Next car show season it will be sharing the spotlight with my SX/4.
