Title: 4.0 intake clearance question
Post by: rommel1940 on December 21, 2015, 06:22:27 PM
I plan  on using a complete 4.0 engine, but I want to use a gronk carb adapter , a motorcraft carb on the stock 4.0 intake.has anybody done this? Will I have a hood clearance issue?thanks

I have a 4.0 head, 258 intake, gronk carb and adaptor, no clearance problems.  I tried to install one of his cold air intakes with this combo however, and that wouldn't work, so I stuck with his small air cleaner.

That's cool, I wonder if the stock fuel injected intake is taller, its I better match up , the ports.I think I'd get better performance to keep the entire 4.0 engine original. No 258 stuff.I was thinking about a head swap, but to me it seems like the cost isn't that different same as labor, plus with a 4.0 you get a full 190 hp before mods, where a head is 20 to 40hp, a engine is 78hp plus more efficient.  I don't know, tell me if I'm wrong

I don't know if you'll achieve it's full horsepower with a carb adapted to a EFI intake manifold.  I've seen the intake on an Eagle with EFI with no clearance issues with the power booster since the engine is offset to the right, but I have no idea if it will have hood clearance issues with the carb on the efi intake.

It would be pretty close though, this would be for my sport 4 speed project car, my 84 limited I'm keep stock, its running excellent after the big cap upgrade.great compression only 81, 000 miles. Just thinking ahead . I'm thinking 4.0 carbed otherwise stock, 4 speed thats stock and np229 to keep things simple

If you switch to the EFI intake you'll have to rig up some way to be able to use the original power steering unit as its not compatible with the EFI intake.  Or swap to the 4.0 accessories and go serpentine.

Not sure what you mean about power, it would be carbed, ,with 4.2 accessories

Sorry, I meant to say "power steering".  The original brackets won't work with the EFI intake without some fabrication.

Oh yeah, I heard that it will basically work, except theres no top bolt support, but the rest line up, and the person that did that ,says thats sufficient, we'll see

Unless you romp on it, it's okay. I have an XJ PS setup for mine. The Renix intake is more conducive to liquid fuel because it was originally designed for Renix Throttlebody EFI. It also fits better with the stock Eagle power brake booster,

Thats a interesting thought, I'll have to investigate that.gronk says he's done it. I'd love to hear dyno numbers
