Title: Difficult starting when warm.
Post by: Ace2600 on December 29, 2018, 02:40:53 PM
Got an 83 with a TF998, besides the disconnected vacuum lines and the Carter, car tends to start well. But once its run for a while, and gotten warm, if I turn it off and try to start it again, it cranks like its lacking power and hesitates between cranks. its acting like some thing heating up, or a bad ground. What should my next move be?

Not really enough to go on.

Might be a hot starter drag.  Check the amp draw on the starter when hot.   If it pegs the amp gauge, or the battery cable to the starter gets real hot; may be bad starter or battery cable.   Could also be a solenoid issue; but sounds to me more like a starter issue.

AMC O. H. You deserve a raise. I was lazy on my post, but thought the same kind of thinking.

It was on my mind - just finished a starter job on a friend's BMW for the same issue.  What a PITA that was - had to remove the intake manifold to get to the starter!   German engineering at its best!   I'll take my AMC's any day.

Im sorry for the lack of information, im new to alot of this, I've only need around 15 years, and I've only recently taken an interest in cars. I do have a basic understanding of most things mechanical, but the electrical stuff tends to stump me. I do know that the car got a new solenoid before I purchased it. So the best place to look is to check the starter and see if its getting hot? Or should i replace it all together?

I hate guessing and just throwing money and parts at a problem without knowing for sure (or at least 85% sure) exactly what's the problem.   Its "probably" the starter or a cable -- but...............

Get it good and hot, and go to an AutoZone for a free test!   Or find someone with one of those little cheapie inductive ammeters that just lays against the battery cable while the starter is cranked.

Here's the cheapie meter I'm talking about:

Good luck.
