maybe not really a gremlin
« on: January 30, 2012, 07:55:23 PM »
Are all Eagles schizophrenic?   The 88 has periodically leaked coolant.  I have repeatedly tightened the clamp, replaced the lower hose, over and over.  It would quit for a week or 3, and then, only after sitting up for a few days would leak again.
This time I really found it!  It was the heater hose at the water pump.  I cut off the end, replaced the hose, and it didn't leak again - for 3 weeks.
It set up over the weekend and this AM it had a puddle of coolant under it.
I haven't looked for the leak and probably won't for a while.
It didn't leak while parked at work today.

I'm right 98% of the time, and I don't care about the other 3%.

I think my '83 is leaking coolant somewhere too. I've checked the oil and it's not milky or anything. I've never seen any coolant leaks where I'm parked, but after filling the coolant up when I first got it after 3 months or so it was below the Add line.

Your gremlin is visiting Colorado periodically because I'm having the same problem on mine, with the upper hose where it attaches to the radiator.  Its fine for awhile, then it leaks, I tighten the clamp, good for awhile, then it leaks again.  I even replaced the hose a few months back figuring it was bad.

You may have to "reround" the intake to the rad.  They get flattened a bit when overtightened over the years and will leak under certain circumstances.

Probably all rusted out! :D

Could it be the water pump is the leaker? I've had some that only leaked if the rad was totally full. Leaked out a spoonful or two and no more unless I filled it all the way up.
On the top hose, check the solder isn't letting go on the fitting. I've had them get porous too.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!
