Just Bought 1982 Concord
« on: October 01, 2012, 02:56:05 PM »
Just bought this on Sep 29:

http://photobucket.com/1982Concord

I first spotted the ad on Sep 17, and noticed that the postal code was similar to that of my childhood house (where my dad still lives).  I then clicked the map and discovered that it was VERY close - only 0.7 km (0.5 miles) away.  I knew that my dad had an open space at his place, so at that point I became very interested.

Finally got schedules coordinated with the seller and went over for a look.  Going in I had a figure of $250 in mind, and that's what I bought it for.  At first sight it looked downright awful (and of course in my wisdom I forgot to take some "as found" pictures).  It had been sitting in the back yard, under a tree, since 2003 or 2004.  It was absolutely covered in dead leaves, twigs, and dirt.  The six pictures in the link above were taken after relocation to my dad's yard, and after significant cleaning had taken place.

The seller had misplaced the keys, so I took my coffee can o'keys with me.  I had about 70 different keys to try, sorted into rings of 10.  Went through three rings without success, then the 33rd time was the charm - third key on the next ring turned the ignition.

One step down, next was a battery and some gas.  Almost no gas in the tank (thankfully), but with some gas poured down the carb, the engine showed signs of life.  Went to pour my jerry can into the tank - locking gas cap.  Had to destructively remove that, but eventually got it off of there.  Poured a few litres of gas in, then tried starting again.  It took a few tries (car had been sitting for nearly a decade, after all), but it roared to life and stayed running.  Three tires were low, the other completely flat, but he had a compressor on hand.

This was actually a diamond in the rough.  The body was pretty good with not much rust.  The windshield and brakes were brand new just before it was parked.  It doesn't sag in the rear like many of these cars do, so the leaf springs may be replacements as well.  Doors don't sag, and the hood release handle is intact.

Much to the seller's surprise, I drove it out of his yard - leaving behind a Concord sized patch of dead grass and four pits about 3" deep.

It needs a tuneup in a big way, and I haven't found a working key for the trunk yet.  A good cleaning is in order too.  Shouldn't take much to get this one on the road again.

Ok, so have you decided what you're gonna do with it?  You gonna keep it, and fix it up/sell it, or you gonna use it for parts?

I don't know if I'm going to keep it or sell it, but it is definitely NOT a parts car.  Way too solid, and lots of new parts installed by the previous owner.

I'm only the third owner, and it has a relatively low 212,155 km (131,827 miles) on it.

I'm updating this post as El Matador sold this concord to another AMC club member.  He's got it at my place, and we are gonna ditch the plastic valve cover, and put on a metal one.  Looks like the holes were already tapped for bolts.  someone modified the plastic valve cover.

Seems to run ok, needs new vacuum hoses all over, and Maybe a few other minor fixes.

Gotta check the brakes...

Hey vangremlin !

Stupid me, I was looking for the 'Like' button... I think I'm still on Facebook.... geezz...

Went to EM's place last night, got a metal valve cover, a re-core'd rad, and a gasket that I hope fits.  it's about the right year for the head, so finger's crossed.

I'll get some pics asap.

Well, we got the new valve cover, with a new gasket.  changed out to some new vacuum lines, as some were cracking, and put on some new gas line hose.

Got some new sparkplugs from Dean tonight, and those will go next weekend.

Having issues inserting images from my pc... It's been awhile since I've done this...

Right!  Got it, thank you.  I was still in the upper area under the 'B' to bold the text...

So, we pulled off the valve cover... There was some kind of squeeze on gasket, and it was just was crumbling apart.  no wonder it was leaking...

Got a new washer fluid motor for the car, put on a new rad, and overflow container for the rad.  EM (Dean) has several, so

Russ - The new owner said the brakes were a bit squeaky, but the car hasn't been driven for like 5 years.   Had to fix a spring that had come off the back Driver's side drum, and the adjuster had fallen down. but now it looks good.

So we go to put the new gasket on, and I think the bolt holes threads are stripped...  Russ tried putting Loc-tite on them, but it appears that didn't work, it's still leaking oil... So now we are gonna have to drill out the holes that hold on the valve cover, and re-tap them.

When you drill out the holes are you going to tap to a larger size. I ask because I recently had some trans. work done & it looks like they stripped (1) bolt (won't tighten) or the hole for the oil pan. It's leaking. I've got to pull it to be sure.  I could take it back but they will probably put some lock-tite or something in there.

when I had my transmission rebuilt some of the holes for the pan were stripped out but when I got it back all of the bolts were good and snug at first I thought that maybe they had tapped the holes but when I pulled the pan to change filters I found out that they had put in some of those helical coil inserts. Seeing as they have worked well for several years now in my transmission I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work for a valve cover or another transmission.

I'll know more today when I get the car off the ground & solidly on the ramps. I put that oversize pan originally in myself & had no problems with bolts & torque. They may have used a air tool to install them but surprisingly they seem to be set about 100 in/lbs not 150. I've never used those helic springs but have previously used the taper & bottom bits on the valve cover with good results.

So today we got the 2150 carb from EM, and I had a ford dist.  bought the coil on Thursday.

One thing we noticed, is that the car's #5, and #6 were reversed.  No wonder it runs and starts rough.

Got the coil on, the top of the dist, changed out the carb.  set the timing by ear as best I could.

Funny that I didn't need to do the nut bypass, because it already was coming straight from the ignition module, to the dist.  No cutting...

Took off all the pollution gear that I could.   Seems to be running pretty good.  Russ is driving the car home, and he's gonna message me on Facebook and let me know how it did.

So Russ has had nothing but issues.  Running rough, stalling constantly, wire issues, etc.

there were some wire issues to the starter solenoid - those fixed... he changed the starter solenoid, but didn't screw it tight to the body, that fixed, and the same with the main ground going from the battery to the block.  that fixed.

We put the old carter back on, and minus some of the pollution gear, it seems to run much better.  I don't think the 2150 that EM supplied was set up for this attitude or something, cause it's running horrible.  I'm not really that good at setting up carbs, so we just switched it back to the carter.

So, he's just left my garage, and he's off driving home... Hopefully I'll hear that it ran fine.... fingers crossed.

Good luck, keep us posted! The 2100 series is super easy to tune, can give you some tips if you want to go that route.

I'll keep that in mind if he ever wants to redo it.  thanks.

the Concord is running much better - according to Russ.   So he wants to keep with the carter for now.

New issue... his heater is leaking, and EM had 2 for replacements.   Russ is gonna have someone else do that job, as I'm gonna be too busy for the next few weeks.

Otherwise, he's talking about painting it (like backyard paint job), and I know he needs shocks.. or something in the back pass side.

everything else seems to be running ok for now.  I'll keep posting updates as I get them - And pics.
