This might be scary!
« on: August 14, 2014, 07:32:12 PM »
So, tomorrow my baby and I are going to it's first off-road dirt trail. It's a giant truck night in Eastern Ohio (Yankee Lake). I suppose my goal is not to get stuck or hurt my car. I'm definitely excited and will post pics!!
My list of my cars/toys (or toys at my disposal!)

I like to to tell people my Eagle is like a Ferrari. It's quirky, tempermental, border-line exotic, and something you don't see everyday.  See? Makes perfect sense....

Yes. I think Whuntmore's youtube vid explains this well. I figure I will not have as much ground clearance as most of the vehicles out there, so I will be doing this very conservatively and on high ground. Also, it hasn't rained in about three days or so, so it should be pretty dry.

Watch out for the drunk idiots that think our cars are to be used for a parking block.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

True that. Funny thing though, I was watching Youtube vids of Yankee Lake (Truck Night) to see how serious the trails are, and a couple guys in an XJ laughed at a broken down Subaru...then one of them said, "Man though, I really want an AMC Eagle"  8)

So my Eagle did AMAZINGLY well on the off-road trails. It got pretty muddy in spots, and I tried to be conservative with getting it too deep. However, there was a LARGE hill to get to high ground that there is plenty of evidence on YouTube of cars not making up. Even with 2.35 gears, she climbed right up without a fuss and impressed the heck out of my passengers. Only once did I become concerned as I miscalculated a departure angle and hit something...I'm thinking the back bumper. Everything was fine though. The only concern is that my power steering is acting a little funky, like nonexistant when stationary, but I think everything is just so caked with mud. I need to pressure wash it after work today.  All in all though, fun course and since (mostly, relatively) dry, pretty safe for her too.

The only part of this entire thread that I find threatening is the fact that you're using 2.35 gears. On a single gear case like the NP129 I would be a little worried. Then again I'm the guy that decides to zoom off for work in the middle of a record snow storm with the Eagle. You did good. :occasion14:

No action pics?

Unfortunately, no. I was too focused on driving....I really wanted my passengers to at least video some, but I sort of forgot to hand over my phone and say, "Here. Hold steady. Press the red button!"

Next time, I want to stage it and take a pic in action. It did amazingly well.
